Amizi Rosman While stock last...! Posted by The Green Campaign at 10:39 , 0 comments WEDNESDAY, 14 JANUARY 2009 Facts about Styrofoam WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT STYROFOAM
Styrofoam is a trademark of the Dow Company, but the material itself is called polystyrene. Like so many other plastics, it's all around us - very commonly used in packing material in food trays and a wide variety of other products - even explosives such as napalm and hydrogen bombs!
The bad news is that polystyrene is manufactured from petroleum. It's highly flammable and a chemical called benzene, which is a known human carcinogen (chemical which can cause cancer), is used in its production. Polystyrene foam, used commonly as padding in appliance packaging, takes an incredibly long time to break down in the environment and additionally, animals may ingest it which blocks their digestive tracts and ultimately causes starvation.
Given the nature of polystyrene, it's surprising that such an energy intensive, oil sucking and toxic substance is allowed to be use as packaging for food; particularly for items such as meat where the food has direct contact with it. Nearly two dozen cities in the world have banned the use of polystyrene for this purpose.

It is not harmful as lunchbox are not made from polystyrene. There is no reason to be ashamed to bring your own lunchbox to school. Even if you are, please consider to use a plate instead of using Styrofoam.

'The Green Campaign' members are working hard to search for informations regarding the excessive usage of styrofoams - the impacts on the environment and human's health. We are looking for ways on how prevent and reduce the usage of styrofoam. We will post it here once we have gathered all the informations. Please come back soon for updates. First of all, I want to say thank you for visiting 'The Green Campaign' official website + blog. 'The Green Campaign' has made a massive success after it's launching. This blog has been created to educate people (especially bloggers) as well the publics - to gain consiousness on the environment hazards we are facing today and to search for solutions on how we can save our earth.
There are many things that we can do to save the environment. Whether you live in the Capital City, Bandar Seri Begawan or Seria Town, you can help to clean up your local environment and work toward improving the global environment.
One way you can help the environment is by joining an Environmental Organization, namely 'The Green Campaign'. Many more of these groups already have developed action plans for saving the environment. The 'Environment Club' is another example, organised by the SMSA MPPs.
You can also take part in the 'Earth Days' in future. Be sure to become a member of 'The Green Campaign' by following this blog. Any future activities and contributions to save our earth will be informed here and 'The Green Campaign Facebook Fan Page'. As a members, you can involved in any upcoming activities as well.
There are many ways that you can help the environment in your daily life. The two posts below; 'Water Conservation' and 'Reusable Bags' serves as guidelines and tips to educate readers on how to conserve our water resources and to reduce the pollutions, either water, land or air.
Question:
"But
isn't
it
too
late?"
Its never too late to start changing things for the better. The earth is constantly trying to heal itself from the damage we inflict upon it. The reason this healing process isn't working anymore is because we consume natural resources and pollute the environment faster than the earth can recover from it. When we reduce our consumption and the amount of pollutants we create, the earth will be able to regenerate more easily. Working towards sustainable lifestyles will create a better, healthier environment for everyone, now and in the future - and that the hope lay with each one of us.

Water Conservation Water conservation is the most cost-effective and environmentally sound way to reduce our demand for water. Over the years rising populations, growing industrialization, and expanding agriculture have pushed up the demand for water. Efforts have been made to collect water by building dams and reservoirs; some countries have also tried to recycle and desalinate (remove salts) water. Water conservation has become the need of the day.
Water is essential
Water is so essential in our daily lifes that we need it every single day. We need to conserve our water resources and find ways to prevent it from being polluted by harmful chemicals. Saving water can protect our water (especially clean water) from disposing it to the sewage.
Saving water also saves energy. Approximately 6.5% of the energy is used for pumping and treating water. For your personal energy bill, using less hot water saves on water heating. On the flip side, saving energy and using alternative energy saves water electricity production from fossil fuels and nuclear energy is responsible for 39% of all freshwater withdrawals in the nation.
What's more?
Using less water also puts less pressure on our sewage treatment facilities, and uses less energy for water heating.
It is important to remember that water is not just required by humans. The environment also needs water to help maintain ecosystems and overall catchment health.
We conserve water because it is the right thing to do. There are many effective ways to conserve water in and around your home. Look through this list for ways that will work for you.
1. Try to do one thing each day that will result in saving water. Don't worry if the savings are minimal because every drop counts! You can make a difference.
3. Form a group of water-conscious people and encourage your friends and neighbours to be part of this group. Promote water conservation in community newsletters and on bulletin boards.
4. Encourage your family to keep looking for new ways to conserve water in and around your home.
5. Make sure that your home is leak-free. Many homes have leaking pipes that go unnoticed.
6. Do not leave the tap running while you are brushing your teeth or soaping your face. Turn off the water while you brush your teeth can save 4 gallons a minute. That's 200 gallons a week for a family of four.
7. Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Put a brick or any other device that occupies space to cut down on the amount of water needed for each flush.
8. Do not throw away water that has been used for washing vegetables, fruits and rice. Use it to water plants or to clean the floors.
9. Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes. You'll save up to 1000 gallons a month.
10. To save water and time, consider washing your face or brushing your teeth while in the shower.
Do one thing each day that will save water. Even if savings are small, every drop counts. Posted by The Green Campaign at 00:19 , 0 comments TUESDAY, 16 DECEMBER 2008 Reusable Bags The worldwide annual consumption of disposable plastic bags is somewhere between 500 billion and a trillion - that works out to be around a million bags a minute.
According to Bags On The Run, a manufacturer of reusable bags, The crude oil needed to make 18 plastic bags could drive a car for a mile.
1. Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, whales and other marine mammals die every year from eating discarded plastic bags mistaken for food.
2. Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photodegrade - breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food web when animals accidentally ingest.

5. According to David Barnes, a marine scientist with the British Antarctic Survey, plastic bags have gone "from being rare in the late 80s and early 90s to being almost everywhere from Spitsbergen 78 degrees North [latitude] to Falklands 51 degrees South [latitude]."
6. Plastic bags are among the 12 items of debris most often found in coastal cleanups, according to the nonprofit Center for Marine Conservation.
We can see how devastating the effects of using plastic bags. We can do something to reduce to impacts that we have caused to the aquatic animals and our environments. Literally, we cannot help physically, but what we can do is to prevent it from happen and reduce the efffects.
