San Jos State University Department of Electrical Engineering EE 127, Electronics for Bioengineering Applications, Spring 2011

Instructor: Office Location: Telephone: Email: Office Hours: Class Days/Time: Classroom: Prerequisites: Course Description Study of the fundamental concepts of electrical circuits relevant to the use and design of biomedical instruments and devices currently used for patient care using several examples. Course Goals and Student Learning Objectives This course is meant for those engineering students who have some basic exposure to electric circuits and want to deepen their knowledge in the electronics area relevant to the use and design of biomedical instruments and devices. The course will provide an overview of necessary biomedical electronics. It will allow student to build and test these devices in the lab and will provide the basis for signal analysis. The course will also cover biomedical sensors and biomedical devices currently in patient care. Students can also use this knowledge in other medical device classes offered by the Biomedical engineering program and become better prepared to move into the medical-device industry with a thorough understanding of biomedical devices currently used for patient care. Course Content Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: LO1 Explain the basic physiological sources for many biomedical signals (k) LO2 Solve fundamental problems involving operational amplifiers (e) LO3 Built circuits for operational amplifiers (k) LO4 Explain the operational characteristics biopotential amplifiers (k) LO5 Build basic biopotential amplifiers and record data for future analysis (e) LO6 Record data for data-acquisition equipment for biomedical signals (k) LO7 Solve fundamental signal processing problems (e) Mallika Keralapura ENGR365 (408) 924-3915 Mallika.keralapura@sjsu.edu T/Th 9:30-12 T/Th 12-1:15pm ENG 401 EE 98

These are group labs (groups of 2 or 3). 5 of these labs will have post-lab questions. These are individual assignments. Homework 2 HWs will be assigned Examinations Midterms: There will be two midterms during the semester. First midterm will cover the material covered till then. The second midterm will cover the material covered after the first midterm till the date of the midterm. The exact date is on the schedule. There will be no make-up exams (in very special circumstances, written excuse and official proofs are required for making-up exams). Final: The final will take place as per the university schedule. Final will cover the entire course material. However, there will be more questions from the material covered after the second midterm than the material covered before it. Grading Labs (8 each 3%) +1% bonus: 25% Post-Labs (5 each 3%): 15% HWs (2 each 5%): 10% Exam I: 15% Exam II: 15% Final Exam: 20% Grading Percentage Breakdown is as follows: 94% - 100% A 93% - 90% A-

University Policies
Academic integrity

Students should know that the Universitys Academic Integrity Policy is availabe at http://www.sa.sjsu.edu/download/judicial_affairs/Academic_Integrity_Policy_S07-2.pdf. Your own commitment to learning, as evidenced by your enrollment at San Jose State University and the Universitys integrity policy, require you to be honest in all your academic course work. Faculty members are required to report all infractions to the office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development. The website for Student Conduct and Ethical Development is available at http://www.sa.sjsu.edu/judicial_affairs/index.html. Instances of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Cheating on exams or plagiarism (presenting the work of another as your own, or the use of another persons ideas without giving proper credit) will result in a failing grade and sanctions by the University. For this class, all assignments are to be completed by the individual student unless otherwise specified. If you would like to include in your assignment any material you have submitted, or plan to submit for another class, please note that SJSUs Academic Policy F06-1 requires approval of instructors.
Campus Policy in Compliance with the American Disabilities Act

If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, or if you need to make special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible, or see me during office hours. Presidential Directive 97-03 requires that students with disabilities requesting accommodations must register with the DRC (Disability Resource Center) to establish a record of their disability.
