1. BACKGROuND: The production infrastructure is getting ever better in India and the potential for offering new products to both local and foreign markets is increasing. As a result of the investments made in companies research and development departments, technological innovation and improvements realized on the end products can be observed. On the other hand, qualified manufacturing and technological innovation can only be reflected on the end-product with the added value that industrial design can provide. It is getting clear that using industrial design as an effective tool grants companies one of the biggest powers in competition. The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Government of India published an extra-ordinary notification to be published in the Gazette of India about the constitution of India Design Council in pursuance of National Design Policy announced by the Government of India on 8th February, 2007. This particular Central Government notification is dated 2 March 2009. The Agenda of the newly constituted India Design Council is to eventually expand to include and address the critical development issues along with major activities. The Council aims to undertake design awareness and effectiveness program both in India and abroad. Theoretical infrastructure of india design mark is coordinated by India Design Council.

2. ThE OBJECTIvES OF INDIA DESIGN MARK PROCESS ARE TO: Raise the profile of Indian design: This India Design Mark will sensitize entrepreneurs and corporate to how design is integral to business success. Increasing general awareness of design will increase interest of students to study design. Publicity campaigns related to india design mark will also create substantially high levels of general awareness to the public. Encourage and demonstrate the use of design: india design mark will bring to fore projects of social and economic value that have benefited from good design processes, thereby encouraging other stakeholders to emulate these successes. Give broader recognition to the value of design: As of now the value of design is understood only in academic circles. The value of design needs to be recognized in wider circles for design to become useful to society, industry and government. 4. GENERAL PROCESS

Certification is organized every year and the process is coordinated in four stages composed of application, pre-evaluation, certification and presentation. Application > Application requirements and dates for the india design mark Certification is published in the Internet site of the organization. Applications are done on the Internet. Pre-evaluation > Group of experts screen the applications on the internet ensuring that they meet basic criteria. These products are shortlisted to be presented to the jury. Certification > Owners of products which pass pre-evaluation stage are invited to the exhibition which takes place in a suitable venue by the india design mark Certification secretariat. Prior to opening of the exhibition, juries formed of experts from specific sectors evaluate the exhibited real products for the india design mark certification. For those products, which cannot be exhibited in the exhibition hall because of their size, the jury will examine their scaled models and/or large photographs. Presentation > india design mark Products are published to the press and public through a ceremony on the opening day of the exhibition, which is the next day of the evaluation. Exhibition is open to the public, press establishments, public institutions, manufacturing companies, high level representatives of business life together with all actors of design world. Together with the exhibition a conference is organized where academic personnel and professionals with national and international recognition are invited and where updated information and approaches are shared. Following the exhibition, information regarding the india design mark designs are shared with the participants through professional presentations prepared by owners of india design mark designs.

6. PRESENTATION A presentation programme is organized covering the stages starting from the launch of the india design mark and continues with the application process, rewarding and exhibiting. Following the jury evaluation selected winning products get india design mark certificate allowing the use of India Design Mark on the product by the company and the designer who are found eligible. All designs, passing the first stage and are exhibited and are published in the exhibition catalogue and web site. They are indexed in the web site according to years, sectors and product types. All certified designs are published in the india design mark Catalogue. The catalogues are sent to all participating companies and designers of india design mark free of charge. For the announcement and introduction india design mark to the public and the industry, following activities are realized: Presentation and Launching: india design mark press meeting and announcement of certification to the public and industry. India Design Mark Exhibition Exhibiting all products and conceptual projects applied to the india design mark and passed the preevaluation. india design mark Certification winning designs are indicated specially in the exhibition. India Design Mark Certification Ceremony: On the opening day of the exhibition, certificates to manufacturing companies and designers of those designs are presented. Conference: Conference is realized following the exhibition opening where national and international academicians and professionals from design field are invited. The conference is formed of panels and seminars where design is discussed from professional, cultural, educational and economical points of view. Representatives and members of the project partners, academicians and students of design schools, companies and professional designers will be participating to the conference. Traveling Exhibition: Repeating the exhibition of india design mark products in various cities in India and abroad.
