Feinstein challenge
aids Helping Hands
From March 1 through April 30,
the Fight Against Hunger movement,
sponsored by the noted philanthropist,
Alan Feinstein, is offering their yearly
challenge. During these two months
only, any monetary and/or food dona-
tions made to Helping Hands will be
totaled and the amount reported to the
Feinstein Foundation in order to qualify
Helping Hands for a portion of the one
million dollars that has been set aside
to match funds. The amount Help-
ing Hands receives will be its portion
when all the qualifying food pantries in
the United States have submitted their
donation amounts. The more Helping
Hands collects, the larger the percent-
age they will receive.
Donations may be taken to either
Howard City bank (Firstbank or In-
dependent), dropped off at the pantry
during regular open hours, sent using
Paypal through our website at www.
helpinghandshc.org or mailed directly
to Helping Hands at P. O. Box 532,
Howard City, MI 49329. (If a receipt is
needed, a request, along with your name
and address, must accompany checks.)
Questions may be e-mailed to hchelp-
inghands@gmail.com.
The goal is to collect as much as pos-
sible during the above time frame so
that Helping Hands will receive a great-
er amount of the million dollars and all
involved with Helping Hands wish to
thank, in advance, each and every one
who contributes to help meet this chal-
lenge.

CARSON CITY Carson City
Hospital had a full house on Thurs-
day, Feb. 9. More than 170 high
school students from the surround-
ing area flled the front lobby for a
student reception showcasing the
newly acquired da Vinci Si Surgical
System.
Juniors and seniors were invited
to test drive the future of surgery on a
demo da Vinci Si Surgical System in
the hospital lobby. Carson City-Crys-
tal High School, Fellowship Baptist
Academy in Carson City, Fulton
High School, Greenville High School,
Ithaca High School, Montabella High
School, Pewamo-Westphalia High
School, and St. Louis High School
joined in on the fun. After using the
da Vinci Si Surgical System, the stu-
dents received buttons that said, I
Did Surgery! and gift bags.
It was amazing to see the dif-
ference between using the da Vinci
System versus just your hands, said
Danielle Lahay of Montabella High
School. You dont realize how much
your hands shake until you compare
it to using the da Vinci System. It gets
rid of all the shakes!
Taylor Friesen of Fulton High
School said, I was so excited about
playing with the da Vinci. I came
home and told my parents how sweet
it was. Many of the students com-
mented about the precision, control,
and magnifcation that comes with
using the da Vinci System.

Si Surgical System or Carson City

Girls Tournament
Trophy Comes Home
What a great end to a wonderful season!
The boys and girls played their fnal games at West Michigan
Christian on February 4th and neither team held anything back.
The GCS boys played frst again South Olive and gave them
quite a fght. Down by double digits, our boys rallied back in the
fnal quarter to close
the gap to fve point. What a difference compared to the frst
time they faced them! The fnal score was 23-28, with
South Olive on top, but our boys were clearly winners in
our eyes. Each one of the boys made huge gains this season and
showed great spirit and talent. We are very proud of all of you.
The GCS girls were a united front as they easily defeated
South Olive, the only team that beat them during the regular
season. They controlled the entire game, winning 21-9!!! Their
fnal game was against Beaverdam and again, our girls played
beautifully, dominating the game. Final score...25-10! Congratu-
lations girls!!! It has been ffteen long years, but the trophy home
is home! As with the boys, each of you grew your skill level and
talent. Our 8th grade girls, Jena, Kristina, Libby and Alyssa are
going to be greatly missed, but we also anticipate watching the
up and coming girls continue to excel next year. Great job girls!
Thank you for a great season. We are proud of you!!!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Waiting for answers
TO THE EDITOR:
In last months Township meeting it was
sub jested that there was a match going on
between myself and Reynolds Township.
I can see where it may seem that way but
thats not my intent. After getting tired of
the abuse and intimidation I decided to take
a stand and to be more informed of what
was happening in our community. Only to
discover that I was not alone in the Board
and Zoning Administrators treatment. For
those whos been keeping track of the arti-
cles in the paper or been going to the meet-
ings I believe you would have to agree this
board is clearly not representing the peoples
wishes. Example: Our Zoning Administrator
never backed off or agreed to allow Shirley
Northrup to replace her home until after the
articles in her behalf appeared in the paper,
after all as Mr. DeJong says, its no money
out of his pocket. It seems that this board
and its members are going out of their way
to keep any information from getting out
starting with their own minutes of the meet-
ing under public comments. They are so
brief that youll never know what was said
or they just leave facts or statements out all
together and by refusing ample time to al-
low me to answer allegations that they made
through their attorney. I asked Tina (Town-
ship Clerk) for some information, I was told
to fll out a FOIA request only to be denied
by using the statement she does not under-
stand what I am requesting and Mr. DeJong
stated you got all your going to get from me
if you want anything else take me to court
so much for before. In Januarys meeting I
presented the board with two requests, the
frst was reimbursement of funds according
to Ordinance 16.5 Fees. The second was
the fees paid to the Township under Ordi-
nance 16.2 sect. C Permits which was paid
I believe was under intimidation and forced
into purchasing when they created their own
Building and Safety Department which was
done after I purchased the permits through
the county. l asked the board to respond
to each of these in Februarys meeting all
I received was silence, I will be flling out
the proper forms asking that these items
be put on the agenda in Marchs meeting
so the board can respond. The board keeps
stating they are bound by an oath that they
take and also the zoning ordinance. I believe
they have lost sight of why they were elected
or appointed. They were appointed to rep-
resent all the people and to use the zoning
ordinance as guidelines and in each case it
should be judged based on facts and the citi-
zens wishes. In the last few cases there was
absolutely no objections other than from our
board members so they choose not to listen
to the people. If you dont get involved your
sending a signal to the board that they can
do anything they want, is this what we want
in our township?

Votes yes for sheriffs
department millage
Constant economic stress from the loss
of major employers in Montcalm County
has necessitated yearly cuts to the Montcalm
County budget. All areas of the budget have
been affected; however, most critical are the
reductions to the Montcalm County Sheriffs
Department budget, which directly impacts
the safety and security of our community.
In the Howard City/Panhandle area of
the county, the Montcalm County Sheriffs
Department is the only 24-hour coverage
currently in existence. The offcers of the
Howard City Police Dept. and the Michigan
State Police currently work a restricted num-
ber of hours due to budgetary constraints. In
addition, our State Police Post assists with
coverage within a three county area - Mont-
calm, Gratiot and Ionia. In my opinion, we
cannot afford to ignore the call for additional
funding for our police protection. The sup-
port and necessity for additional millage for
police protection is a must have for our
community.
Last years budget cuts included wage
freezes, union concessions in pay and ben-
efts and additional layoffs to the Sheriffs
Department. When the county eliminated
$1.3 million from its budget, $400,000
came from the Sheriffs Department alone,
resulting in further cuts in staffng within
road patrol and court security. Next year the
projected cuts, very likely, will include fur-
ther reductions in road patrol offcers and
the elimination of 24/7 police coverage for
Montcalm County. Recently, the Attorney
General has proposed that he will reinstate
1,000 offcers; however, our state is down by
2,000 offcers. In addition, last year approxi-
mately 10,000 Michigan prisoners were re-
leased or paroled early.
The request is for 1 mill for fve years,
which will be dedicated to the Sheriffs De-
partment to restore up to four additional
deputies to bring the staffng level back to
the 2002 level. If you are in need of emer-
gency assistance from the police department,
you do NOT want to be told that the nearest
offcer is in Carson City or Greenville or that
your call will be handled in the morning when
an offcer comes on duty. Additional offcers
on staff will help alleviate such issues. The
additional funding will be a separate fund
dedicated to staffng offcers, training and
capital equipment for offcers.
No one likes the idea of increased taxes.
However, if you need the assistance of a po-
lice offcer, then its usually an emergency. I
hate the thought of being told by a 911 dis-
patcher that on one is available to help my
family, friends or fellow community mem-
bers. If you are in a situation that either you
or a loved one needs police assistance, the
cost does not seem to matter much. That
thought, for me, makes it much easier to sup-
port this millage request.
Please join me in VOTING YES for the
Montcalm County Sheriffs Department mill-
age.

VOTE YES

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28
TH
AND VOTE YES TO PROMOTE THE SAFETY
OF ALL OF US IN MONTCALM COUNTY. THANK YOU.
DEAR CITIZENS,
The Committee on Public Safety is asking you to join
with us in supporting the Tuesday, February 28th
millage vote to ensure adequate police protection in
Montcalm County.
We believe that when a citizen of this county calls the
police in an emergency situation, her or she should be
able to rely on the fact that there will be a timely and
effective response to that call - day or night - county-
wide.
With the current budget crisis facing the Montcalm
County Sheriffs Ofce, as well as the increased number
of complaints being led, the department is without
adequate resources to fulll this basic commitment to
our citizens.
A yes vote on Tuesday, February 28th will provide ad-
equate manpower and cars on the road to protect our
citizens, 24 hours a day.

Sometimes law enforcement ofcers get sued for
just doing their jobs. So it was in the case of Stone
v Temelko, a 2008 case that arose in Washtenaw
County and was just recently heard by the Court
of Appeals .
The accident. The Plaintiff, Stone, was injured in
a rear-end collision by Ofcer Temelko. Ofcer
Temelko had been in the lead of a two patrol
car chase, when he braked hard unexpectedly.
Ofcer Hiserote, who had fallen in behind Ofcer
Temelko, rear-ended him. Temelkos patrol car
launched into Stones car and Stone suffered
serious injuries.
Ofcers take risks. Plaintiff Stone claimed
that both ofcers had been negligent in the
operation of their vehicles, and, one must pay
for the consequences of their negligent acts.
Fundamentally we all believe that accidents
which cannot reasonably be avoided are just
that, accidents. Fundamentally we believe, too,
that accidents which occur because we were
negligent, could have been avoided. As such, the
resulting injuries could have been avoided. And
when its your mother or son who is seriously
injured, we want someone to make some kind
of restitution. But whos to say what is safe, or
negligent, operation of a patrol car in pursuit of
a criminal, in a high speed chase, in who knows
what road and trafc conditions?
The Governmental Tort Liability Act. In 1964
the Michigan Legislature passed the Governmental
Tort Liability Act to help protect government
employees who are performing government
duties with reasonable care, from frivolous citizen
lawsuits. It says, partly, that a governmental
agency is immune from tort liability (meaning
immune from liability for their own negligence) if
the governmental agency is engaged in the exercise
or discharge of a governmental function, and, if
the ofcer, employee, member, or volunteer is
acting or reasonably believes he or she is acting
within the scope of his or her authority, and the
ofcers, employees, members, or volunteers
conduct does not amount to gross negligence that
is the proximate (meaning closest) cause of the
injury or damage. So reasonable acting, and not
grossly negligent, ofcers are not immune from
prosecution.
What is reasonable? The ofcers maintained
they had been acting reasonably. But Stone
argued Not so! Hiserote had followed Temelko
too closely, had followed at an unsafe distance,
had improperly veered into the turn lane to avoid
the collision, had been driving too fast even for
a high speed chase (over 80). Stone claimed
Hiserote had not preconrmed with Temelko the
route they would take, had then failed to realize
the ofcers would have to turn right, and had
thus been at fault for the collision when Temelko
braked. And Hiserote had admitted fault. How
could Stone not win?
The chase failed the gross test. The majority
of the Court (Justice Kelly disagreed) read the
Act then dened gross negligence. Gross
negligence requires that Hiserote had operated
her vehicle with a substantial lack of concern for
whether an injury could result. In other words,
could an objective observer have concluded,
reasonably, that Hiserote simply did not care
about the safety or welfare of the people in the
vehicles in front of her? Who would believe that?
The Court didnt. The ofcers were immune.
The lesson? Dont be Stone, the guy in the lead,
the one who was naughty, who started the chase,
and who ended up in the hospital, sorry he didnt
think ahead, that breaking the law would mean
broken bones.

Essential Oils
Many people have never heard of Essential Oils. I am referring to the use of Oil for medicinal
purposes. Some of us remember from the Bible, a story about baby Jesus and the three wise men
bringing Frankincense and Myrrh. The Bible also mentions the Balm of Gilead. So thousands of years
again we know that these oils were used for healing. The Egyptians and Chinese used these oils at
least 6000 years ago. Today there are hundreds of Essential Oils available for our therapeutic use.
The Oils can be taken internally, but most of the time they are applied externally or simply
inhaled. The oils contain many compounds that can be identied, isolated and studied. There
are two theories about how they work. First, these individual components of the oils have anti-
inammatory, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-cancer properties. When the oil is applied to the
skin or inhaled, it is absorb and circulated through the body. The active ingredients then do their
thing within the body, adjusting the chemistry based on its individual properties.
The second theory has to do with resonant vibrational frequencies. Every atom, molecule, cell,
tissue, organ, and the body as a whole has a resonant vibrational frequency associated with it.
When there is disease within the body, there are changes in the resonant vibrational frequency.
The changes can be at any level. This is actually the basis for the MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
that many of us are familiar with. The oils have the ability to bring the abnormal
frequency back to normal through the Principle of Harmonics. All musical
instruments are based on these Laws of Physics. This simply means that one thing
that is vibrating can cause something else to vibrate at the same rate or frequency.
As far as the oils are concerned, research has determined what oils can inuence
what frequencies within our bodies. We can then educate ourselves to know
what oils can be used to reduce pain and inammation, what oils can remove
bacteria and viruses, what oils can change the vibrational frequency of tumors
and cancers. Understanding this we realize there is a complete therapeutic
system available to us, using the Essential Oils to help us improve our health.
