SYNOPSIS ROLE OF TRADE UNIONS IN EMPLOYEE WELFARE WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO GIC EMPLOYEE S UNION

INTRODUCTION Introduction Of the Organization New India Assurance is a leading global insurance group, with offices and branches throughout India and various countries abroad. The company services the India continent with a network of 1608 offices, comprising 26 regional offices, 393 Divisional offices and 648 branches, with 21000 employees. New India has the largest number of specialist and technically qualified personnel at all levels of management, who are empowered to underwrite to underwrite and settle claims of high magnitude. New India Assurance has been rated A (Excellent) by A.M. Best Co. making it the only Indian insurance company to have been rated by an international rating agency, rating based on the following factors. y Superior Capital Position y Strong Operating Performance y Only company to develop significant International operations, long record of successful trading outside India.

New India Assurance was incorporated on July 23rd ,1919 by the House of Tata Founder-Sir Darob Tata, It was nationalized in 1973 with merger of India companies. Strengths y Largest number of offices in India and abroad, qualified staff, fully computerized offices. y First to set up an Aviation Insurance department in 1946. y First to introduce the concept of Model Office Training Mission And Values y To develop general insurance business in the best interest of the community y To have transparency in operations 1. INTRODUCTION OF THE TOPIC In this project the role of trade unions can be seen. How the trade unions can help in the welfare of the employees, all the benefits that the employees are getting, up to what level are they satisfied. Trade unions act as a collective relationship between management and the workers. They help to cover aspects like unionism, collective bargaining, workers participation in management discipline and grievance handling disputes and interpretation of labor laws and rules and code of conduct, It also arrives at solutions between the conflicting objectives and values, between the profit motive and social gain, between authority cooperation and interests of the individual, the group and the community.

According to section 2 (b) of the Trade Unions Act of 1926 A trade union is any combination of persons, whether temporary of permanent, primarily of the purpose of regulating the regulations between workers and employees, or between workers and workers and for imposing restrictive conditions on the conduct of any trade of business and includes the federation of two or more trade unions. 2. OBJECTIVES OF STUDY For an organization to run smoothly, it is very important for employers to ensure equitable treatment of employees for various reasons. A trade union works to protect and promote the interests of the workers and the conditions of their employment, the interest of the workers lies in getting reasonable wages, shorter working hours, improved working conditions- social security, both person and of the job. This project is being made for the following objectives : y To get economic security, that want steady employment with and adequate income. y To restrain the management from taking any action which is irrational, illogical, discriminatory of prejudicial to the interests of labour. y To communicate the views, aims feelings and frustrations to the management, that is the employees may want to have an effective voice in discussions which affect their welfare.

y To secure protection from economic hazards, beyond the employees control like illness, accident, death, disability, unemployment and old age. y So that the employees can get along with their fellow workers in a better way and to gain respect in the eyes of their peers. y And last but not the least, to get a job through the good offices of a trade union. 3. IMPORTANCE OF STUDY The existence of a strong and recognized trade union is a pre-requisite to every organization. Decisions take through the process of collective bargaining and negotiations between employer and unions are more influential. Trade Unions play an important role and are helpful in effective communication between the workers and the management. They provide the advice and support to ensure that the differences of opinion do not turn into major conflicts. The central function of a trade union is to represent people at work. But they also important educational role. Organizing courses for their members on a wide range of matters. Seeking a healthy and safe working environment is also a prominent feature of it, The importance of this study is as follows: y Will be helpful in the recruitment and selection of worker. y Help in inculcating discipline among the workers. y Helps in settlement of industrial disputes in a rational manner.

y Helps in social adjustments. Workers have to adjust themselves to the new coming from different backgrounds may become disorganized, unsatisfied and frustrated. Unions help them in such adjustment. y Promoting and maintaining national integration by reducing the number of industrial disputes. y Incorporating a sense of corporate social responsibility in workers. 4. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY The research process will be clearly defined to meet the objectives of the study. The various aspects of the data shall be made to arrive at the results of the study. The research shall include the following. y y y y y y Defining the problem. Statement of research objectives. Planning the sample. Collection of data. Analysis of data Formulation of Conclusion.

Sampling Area New India Assurance Company, Jabalpur.

Sampling Size The sample size will be 75 from the office staff of the New India Assurance Company. Sample Method Convenience Sampling, Purposive Selection. Random Sampling. Type Of Data Secondary- records, documents, instructions, orders, circulars available in the office. Primary- Information collected through questionnaire. Sample Unite One employee will be considered to be one unit. Data analysis And Interpretation The information collected from respondents will be presented in tabulate form classifying the respondents as per their responses in different categories. Further percentage, bar graph, pie chart, mean, mode and co-relation etc will be used as per the requirement.

5. LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY y The study is limited to GIC Jabalpur. y The Sample that is used is used for convenience. And it may suffer from lack of inaccuracy. y The sample size is also not large so the result may not be valid for use in any legal document as evidence as it may not be successful. y The respondents are liable to be biased, not withstanding the confidentiality attempting to be maintained and may not yield objective answers. y When human population is involved, research becomes concerned if behavior can be predicted or studied with validity. Human response can be difficult to measure. Lt is dependent on individual . Rationalizing behavior through experimentation does not account for the process of thought, making outcomes of that process fallible. 6. RESULTS EXPECTED FROM THE STUDY Following results are expected to be achieved by the study being undertaken: y Up till a certain limit, to ensure employees economic security. y To have a control on irrational actions taken by the management. y Allowing employees to give their views on certain discussions (as an employee may have lots of experience working for many years in the company.) y To have friendly relation among all the members so that all the workers may work towards the welfare of the management.
