General Guidelines/ Revision Plan Questions

What happened in your group that will help you as you revise your essay? Did anything happen that confused you or hampered your revision process? If so, what are your strategies for revising your paper?

What can help me, is the group telling me about my in corrections and grammar in my essay summary. No, nothing happened that really confused me, if anything they brought light to things I didnt see at first. Some parts in my essay were spelled right but the wording was in the wrong sentence. The spaces between paragraphs were too big, and also my paragraphs were a little short. Overall nothing too major was incorrect.

Through the Eyes of Fredrick Douglass

In Chapter 4 of Narrative of the life of Fredrick Douglass, Fredrick Douglass explains the killings that take place on Colonel Lloyds Farm. He points out the fact that there is unfair justice and that white men could kill blacks without being convicted or even having a guilty conscious about any crim. Douglass tells about the first murder that he witnessed by the new over seer of Colonel Lloyds farm, Mr. Austin Gore . He describes Mr. Gore as one of the most dreaded of all overseers by the slaves. Douglass also tells us about the killing of the slave Demby and how Mr. Gore killed him without any consequences taking place after the incident .Douglass doesnt just stop there, but also goes on to describe other innocent killings taken place without any punishment or consequences in return. In the beginning Douglass carefully describes the new over seer named Mr. Austin Gore. He explains Mr. Gore as proud, ambitious and preserving. Taking the place of Mr. Hopkins, which the slaves seen as a good over seer. Fredrick explains all of the reasons of why Mr. Gore was Colonel Lloyds ideal over seer. He points out the horrible personality traits Mr. Gore has such as being cruel enough to inflict the severest punishment on slaves. He states that No matter how innocent a slave might be it availed him nothing, when accused by Mr. Gore of any misdemeanor. Douglass states clearly that Mr. Gore was a man to be feared by slaves.

Into the 5th paragraph of Chapter 4 according to Douglass, a slave named Demby gets shot by Mr. Gore .Mr. Gore decided to whip Demby but Demby ran from the beating into a creek, as Douglass explains. He goes on to state that Mr. Gore shot and killed Demby in that creek without warning of pulling out a gun to shoot. He also explains the excuse Mr. Gore later gave Colonel Lloyd on why he shot Demby, that Demby had become unmanageable. Douglass points out the fact that Mr. Gore or any other white man of the matter could get away with killing a slave. Though this was the first killing Douglass described it wouldnt be the last. In the last paragraphs of Chapter 4 Douglass argues with the fact that whites could get away with killing people. Besides Douglasss story on Demby he had many other ones. He explains a story about a man named Mr.Lanman of St.Micheals killing two slaves and bragging about it to others. Douglass also explains another incident in which the wife of Mr. Giles Hicks murdered his wifes cousin. Douglass states that Mrs. Giles beat her with a oak stick of wood for not watching her child which had cried all night due to her falling asleep. He also explains the story of an old man which was owned by Colonel Lloyd ,and how on one Sunday night he decided to go fishing for clams. Douglass claims that while he was fishing he had trespassed another mans property unaware by the name of Mr.Beal Bondly and how he shot and killed the old man. Douglass clearly claims that whites get away with killing blacks un-punishable and even being accepting in their community. From Mr. Gore to Mrs.Lanman and others Douglass argues and wins the fact that innocent slaves can die for no reason or little reason without justice or realization of any wrong having taken place whatsoever.
