Goldwater on today's Republican leaders:

On New Right leader/Heritage Foundation co-founder Paul Weyrich: "If they disagree with you one bit, youre a no-good S.O.B. Who the hell is the New Right anyway? Who is Paul Weyrich? Hes not a leader of the Republican Party." i On unprincipled establishment Republicans: Do not associate my name with anything you do. You are extremists, and youve hurt the Republican party much more than the Democrats have. ii On supporters of Arizona Governor Evan Mecham, who was ultimately impeached and removed from office after misusing state funds: "These people look at me as a Socialist." iii On a possible presidential run by Gen. Colin Powell in 1996: If Powell decides to run, he'll get elected President. If he runs as a Democrat, I might turn into a Democrat.iv To Bob Dole, after Dole's 1996 presidential campaign received lukewarm support from conservatives in the GOP: Were the new liberals of the Republican party. Can you imagine that? v To North Carolina Senator Jesse Helms after Helms introduced a bill that would strip federal courts of their ability to prohibit school prayer in public schools: Did you really write this bill? If I wrote it, I would be ashamed. [Its the equivalent of] outlawing the Supreme Court.vi On right wing radio host G. Gordon Liddy: I heard that jackass Liddy on one of the talk-radio shows. I dont think anyone believes him. Hes a fool. Frankly, I find it offensive that he calls himself a conservative. He thinks like a thug Conservatives seek the wisdom of the past, not the worst of it." vii On the John Birch Society and its founder, Robert Welch, who claimed that President Eisenhower was a communist: "They say, 'you either believe in Bob Welch or by God, you're not a Republican. Well I couldn't agree less."viii On Richard Nixon: The biggest liar Ive ever known. I cant stand him. He lied to his wife, his children and his country. Im still mad at him. He was a dishonest man who never told the truth. He couldnt be trusted.ix "Nixon was the most dishonest individual I have ever met in my life. He lied to his wife, his family,

his friends, his colleagues in the Congress, lifetime members of his own political party, the American people and the world."x
