Eirene:

Nowadays, the Internet has taken over almost all our daily activities. Everything seems to be available in just one click.

Athena: Thats right! Also, it has been a necessity to many especially students and office workers. It can help us in many ways like research, communication, entertainment, and livelihood. Eirene: Speaking of livelihood, we can now both buy and sell items online. It is now faster and more convenient. Even paying bills can be done through online transactions. Athena: And that leads us to the process of electronic commerce or most commonly known as e-Commerce. It is defined as the process of trading by electronic means. Eirene: It is also about doing business electronically like buying and selling of products services, and information via computer networks including the Internet. MUSIC TRANSITION TYPE 2 Athena: Before we discuss e-Commerce further, let me tell you how it all started. As soon as the Internet became accessible to the public in 1991, e-Commerce flourished. Since then, there were many online businesses. Eirene: Faster transactions online through high speed internet connections such as DSL made e-commerce even more convenient for the public. It was also in the nine-teen nineties (19-90-s) when security protocols were introduced. MUSIC TRANSITION TYPE 1 Voice: Part Two Basics of e-Commerce

is one that takes place when data given by a customer is collected, stored, analyzed, and then presented back to the customer in a useful format. The e-Commerce process involves the use of two database servers: one for the seller or company and one for the buyer or customer. A command from the buyers database will be sent to the sellers database once he/she decides to make a transaction and agree to the terms of services. After this, another command will be sent back to the buyers database for confirmation. Once this is done, the transaction is completed. MUSIC TRANSITION TYPE 2 Athena: Of course, for e-Commerce to succeed, it definitely has advantages, Like.. It is open 24/seven. The online store is always open, even while youre asleep. Customers can visit any store, browse products, and place their orders at any time of the day. Athena: Another advantage is its global location. Any store has the advantage of selling online. Because of the Internet, anyone with a connection can access it, eliminating the need to visit retailers from where they currently are. It is convenient not only for buyers but also for the sellers because they can manage their online stores anywhere provided that they have access to the Internet. Aside from these, we can see that there is variety of products. Anyone can sell almost anything to anyone on the web. There will always be buyers no

matter how small or specific the market is. This shows how flexible e-Commerce is and how diverse the products can be. Athena: E-commerce benefits from lower transaction costs. With a wellimplemented online store, the seller can automate many things. By automation the seller can cut the costs on areas like documents preparation, error detection and correction, mail order catalogs, phone calls and labor costs. If your products or services are downloadable, the distribution costs are completely cut off. You can easily arrange the shelves on your store. If the seller has more than 1,000 products on the store, it would be nice if the seller could arrange the shelves within minutes, right? Well, with online store its really easy. Owners can also highlight feature products with few clicks. Doing so might increase the conversion rate. It is also a very convenient way of shopping for customers. Athena: Imagine yourself as a customer, shopping online would be really cool because you dont need to physically be on the store; you can browse through products right in your own homes. And you save more time and gas. You can browse through many products within minutes You can compare prices easily You can choose preferred payment gateway your online store offers. You can provide their important information like their credit card number more securely You can do all that on the go

Athena: Also, for certain products they can have better deals Eirene: And the last advantage is having a transactions recording. A good business means a good transactions recording. No need to hire an employee for the job because every online activity the customers engage in the store will be recorded. Athena: And also, sellers can also view the records to analyze the growth of the stores. MUSIC TRANSITION TYPE 2 Eirene: Although ecommerce offers many advantages to companies and customers, it can also cause many problems. Here are some of the disadvantages of ecommerce and possible solutions. Eirene: One disadvantage is the harmful malicious codes the server backing up an online store might be infected by malicious codes. If thats the case, the online store might be the pathway that sends viruses to customers computers. Eirene: A possible solution to this is to choose the most reliable server provider. It might cost you, but the risk of having an infected server would cost you even more. Athena: Another disadvantage is the shipping takes time. The farther the place, the slower it will get to the customer. Eirene: In connection to the shipping time, the shipping costs more. The basic shipping cost rule is simple: the heavier, the more expensive. Athena: Besides these technical difficulties, there are doubts and fears of

customers. Many people dont understand the benefits of shopping online. They are too afraid to buy something on the web because they doubt if the store is reliable. Also, if you were a customer, wouldnt you be curious if the product is as good as it looks like on the site? Finally, the worst fear that a customer might have is that the seller or the company would steal their money. A possible solution to this is to look for reviews about the online store. The comments of the past customer are very helpful in determining the reliability of the online store. Athena: Consider having too many competitors. Creating an online store Is very easy. You can even do it in less than 5 minutes. Problem is, everyone else can make one, too. If there are thousands of online stores selling similar products, how can you attract customers so they actually buy from you and not from others? Heres a simple suggestion: be original. Having the fact that people manage to live with what is new and trending, try to be innovative in selling products. MUSIC TRANSITION TYPE 2 Athena: After hearing the pros and cons of e-commerce, lets now compare e-Commerce to electronic business or commonly known as e-Business. Because e-Business also uses the internet in performing tasks for business purposes, it is often referred to as e-Commerce and vice versa. These two terms are different from each other in some aspects, as e-business doesnt exactly require transactions to be made.

For example, collaboration with business partners over the internet is also considered one. On the other hand, e-commerce only involves transactions such as buying or selling, or paying bills online. MUSIC TRANSITION TYPE 1 Part Three Applications of e-Commerce

Athena: Knowing the definitions and history of ecommerce, its comparison to e-Business, its advantages and disadvantages, we will now discuss the applications of ecommerce. Its very noticeable in online retailers like Amazon.com, eBay, and many more. The birth of companies such as eBay and Amazon contributed to the rise of e-commerce. Among the famous online stores, both eBay and Amazon were the first to create a name on the internet. The most prominent e-commerce categories today are computers, books, office supplies, music, and a variety of electronics. Athena: Social networking sites also became more popular throughout the years which led to the idea of selling products in sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Multiply. Some famous online shops within our place are Get Stuffed which sells clothes, bags and accessories, and Elbi Ballers which sells baller IDs. Ecommerce somehow changed our way of living. In the past, people go to banks and wait in long lines to pay bills, and go to malls and shops to buy stuff. But now, buying and selling can be as easy as one click! MUSIC TRANSITION TYPE 1

Athena: Lets go through what Eirene and I just discussed about e-Commerce. Eirene: You now know that e-Commerce is based on a relationship between the buyer and seller that involves the exchange of products, services, and information through the Internet. Athena: You should also know by now the advantages of e-Commerce: its open 24/seven, its global location, the variety of products, how it benefits from lower transaction costs, how easy it is to arrange shelves on an online store, the convenience it provides in shopping, and how efficiently it records transactions. Eirene: Dont forget its disadvantages and what you can do to minimize them. Take note of malicious codes, which you can block with a reliable server; the basic. shipping cost rule; customer doubts and fears, which you can moderate with favourable reviews; and the pressure of too much competition, which does not matter so much if you have originality. Athena: Remember that the difference between e-Commerce and e-Business is that e-Commerce always involves buying and selling, which e-Business does not exactly require most of the time. Eirene: Also take note of the many applications of e-Commerce you can avail. MUSIC TRANSITION TYPE 1 Athena: Are you still with us, beloved listeners? I think we should give you a short quiz. Eirene: I agree. So get your pens and papers ready! Well give you up to 12 seconds for each item Athena: Item Number One Briefly define what e-Commerce is.
