The content of MGT 610 is based on two questions. First, Why is strategic change important? We will address this question by studying some of the tools and concepts common to strategic management. The purpose is to learn techniques for analysing an organization and its environment in preparation for making recommendations for strategic change. These techniques are an important end in themselves, but you will be expected to employ them during the required course called Applied Strategic Assessment (MGT 615). In the redesigned MBA curriculum, MGT 610 and MGT 615 were conceptualised as bookends in the strategic management content. MGT 610 introduces the concepts of strategy, competitive advantage, the resource-based view of the firm, strategic change, and the techniques useful for competitive analysis. Then, during MGT 615, you will participate the Strategic Analysis Program, in which you will write a strategic plan for a Tampa Bay organization. In a nutshell, MBA students learn the concepts in MGT 610 and then apply them to a real company in MGT 615. Second, we will address How is strategic change implemented? During this section of the course we will study the techniques that successful organizations have used to overcome resistance to change. The best strategy is meaningless if the organization is unable to implement it. Course Objectives: MGT 610 is the first course in the MBA curriculum to emphasize the total enterprise perspective. To effectively lead an organization during strategic change, a leader must manage across all the functional areas. Consequently, this course encourages students to learn a broad perspective on managing change in organizations. The specific learning objectives are for students to: Train students in the vocabulary & research in Strategic Management and Organizational Development. Enable students to develop an analytical framework to successfully assess organizations and their environment, marshal evidence to support conclusions drawn from the analysis, and engage in strategic decision-making in the presence of risk and uncertainty. Demonstrate the role of top management in dealing with complex and dynamic strategic issues. Specifically, the objective is to explain the role of leadership and ethical decision making in formulating and implementing business strategies.

Assessment Quizzes: At the beginning of classes 2-5, I will give a quiz that covers the reading material assigned for the class. The quizzes will consist of 2 short answer questions and will last 10 - 15 minutes. You can drop your lowest grade and the average of the others will count 20% of your semester grade. There will be no make-up quizzes. If you miss a quiz due to tardiness or absence, your grade will be zero for that quiz. No exceptions. Test: At the beginning of the fourth class (7/29) there will be a cumulative quiz that covers the material from the first four classes. It will be like the daily quizzes, but will be four or five short answer questions and will last only about one hour. The weight is 20%.

Review of a Reading (ROAR) Each student will write a review and opinion of an assigned reading in 2000 words or less. The ROAR is due on the day we discuss the reading in class (see the timetable starting on the next page). You can choose which reading to review based on which topics sound interesting and which times during the term are easiest for you. The goal is for you to reach a clear understanding of the reading, then review the article (as if you were writing a movie review or book review). Write the ROAR as if you were explaining an article to another business school student. Dont merely restate, regurgitate, and rewrite the reading! I have already read the article and dont want to read a mere summary of it. Add value to the article, evaluate and assess it. To earn an A for this assignment, you must teach me something and impress me with your insight. The case (Steinway & Sons on 7/29) is not eligible to be a ROAR topic (in other words you may only write a review of articles or book chapters). Any late ROARs will be penalized 5% per day, no exceptions. Submit your ROAR using the Digital Dropbox on Blackboard. The ROAR counts 25% of your semester grade. Case Analysis & Recommendations A written case analysis is will be the final exam, during the last day of class on 8/12. The protagonist in the case is managing an important strategic change at the company, and you will write a memo to provide analysis and recommendations for how she should lead the strategic change. Imagine that she has hired you to provide consultation for how the change should be made. My expectations are that you will demonstrate mastery of the content of MGT 610, and also make recommendations in the memo that are creative, insightful, feasible, and helpful. You should analyze the situation, and make recommendations based on the analysis. The case will be distributed in class on July 29. The in-class final will count 35% of your semester grade.
