Multislice HELICAL CT SCANNER

MULTI
APPLICATION
This system, the Asteion, is a multislice Helical CT scanner capable of scanning the whole-body. The system generates four slices per revolution, using the Selectable Slicethickness Multi-row Detector (SSMD). Since it can also perform high speed reconstruction at a maximum 12 frames per second, every examination can be processed at ultra-high speed. In combination with the Aspire CI technology, it is possible to quickly perform more accurate scanning and examinations.

FEATURES
High-speed scanning This system permits simultaneous 4-slice acquisition per 0.75 second rotation using the SSMD and providing exceptional volumetric data acquisition. The waiting time for cooling of the X-ray tube is reduced, because the exposure time is short. Therefore, patient waiting time and throughput is improved. Wide range of slice thicknesses The SSMD, which provides both high-speed and high-resolution scanning, allows slice thicknesses of 0.5 mm, 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 8 mm, or 10 mm, to be selected, based on the objectives of the examinations. High quality image The system achieves low-contrast resolution of 2.5 mm at 0.25%, and high-contrast resolution of 0.35 mm. Multislice helical CT can be performed using thin slices in routine examinations, so that high-precision, 3D and MPR images can be generated from the high-resolution voxel data. In CT angiography of the brain, for example, a 40-mm distance can be scanned in 10 seconds at a slice thickness of 1 mm*1. The use of "stack scan" with thin slices minimizes partial volume artifact. High patient throughput In combination with fast scanning, the high-power 60-kW X-ray generator*2 and 6.5-MHU X-ray tube*2, enable the data for routine examinations and the biopsy and 3D generation to be acquired in one scan. The image of any slice thickness can be generated later by reconstruction retry. For example, after the 2-mm slice thickness scanning is performed, the images of several slice thicknesses can be generated from raw data such as a 10-mm thick image for routine examinations, a 5-mm thick image for detail examination, and 2-mm thick image for generation of a 3D volume. Multislice CT fluoroscopy (option) Conventional CT fluoroscopic shows only a single slice, but multislice CT permits realtime image reconstruction to display 3 images obtained by combining 4 slices. Multislice CT fluoroscopy significantly improves operability in biopsy and interventional procedures. *1 Helical pitch 3 *2 Option

Easy operations The system consists of two stand-alone consoles (one for monitoring and the other for image processing). Both consoles are provided with a hybrid keyboard, monitor and mouse, and are capable of simultaneous parallel processing, significantly improving efficiency in performing image processing and diagnosis. The use of a large-size 21-inch color monitor, a sophisticated GUI, and high-performance CPU has improved ease of operation and reduced operation time.

Optimal space utilization The Asteion MULTI consists of only three components - gantry, couch and console. Even though it has a large gantry aperture of 72 cm in diameter and a couchtop width of 47 cm for enhanced patient comfort and safety, the whole system fits into an area as small as 20 meter square.

SYSTEM COMPONENTS AND THEIR FUNCTION

Gantry
The gantry and the patient couch constitute the scanner. The scanner uses a fan-shaped continuous X-ray beam to scan the region to be examined. Transmitted X-rays are detected and converted into electric signals by SSMD. The gantry consists of the main body and its support mechanism. The X-ray tube and the SSMD are mounted facing each other on either side of the gantry aperture. The X-ray tube and detectors rotate continuously about the aperture of the gantry. A slip-ring is employed to transmit power between the gantry and the rotating X-ray high-voltage generator assembly. The gantry may be tilted forward and backward in order to perform tilt scanning. Three-dimensional alignment lights are provided for setting slice positions. Gantry and patient couch operating controls are located on both sides of the front of the gantry housing. The patient guide display indicates the scan status to the operator and the patient. X-ray high-voltage generator is built-in the gantry. The system employs a high-frequency inverter for generating and stabilizing the high voltage supplied to the X-ray tube. Included in the generator electronics are circuits for controlling the speed of the rotating anode in the X-ray tube. Use of a high-frequency inverter system results in high power output coupled with excellent stability. In addition, the system is compact and light weight.

Scanoscope control Scan control Remote control of couchtop movement Remote control of gantry tilt Functions of the console for scanning and image processing Window level and window width adjustment Other various mouse-operated image processing functions

Magneto-optical disk unit

The magneto-optical disk unit permits repeated recording and retrieval of data, like a floppy disk drive. It is a compact, externally mounted, large-capacity digital storage device that can be used to save a large amount of data. Images can be automatically archived to the magnetooptical disk unit via the eXam Plan.

OPERATING FEATURES
Patient handling and positioning
The couchtop can be lowered to within 300 mm of the floor thus simplifying patient transfer to and from a bed or stretcher. Fast and accurate patient positioning is assisted by alignment lights mounted on the gantry aperture. High-precision couchtop positioning is possible from the integrated console or by manual operation from the control panel and clear digital readouts are located on the gantry. Patient observation system (optional) in the operator's room ensures patient safety during scan procedure. The couchtop can be pulled out manually in case of an emergency.

Patient couch
The patient couch is located in front of the gantry and supports the patient. The entire unit moves vertically and the top moves longitudinally. In case of an emergency, the couchtop may be pulled out manually with very little effort. The couchtop can be lowered to a minimum height of 30 cm from the floor. This facilitates transferring the patient from a low bed or stretcher.

Scanning
Toshiba Scanoscope provides a radiographic-like fullview image of the patient for high-precision advance planning of the slice positions. The axial length of the scanning field for Scanoscope can be adjusted up to 1,390 mm at any time even while monitoring the image being reconstructed in real time. This minimizes patient radiation dosage. The auto index functions allows automatic incremental couchtop movement based on the slice positions determined while viewing the Scanogram.

Console
The two stand-alone consoles (one for scanning, and the other for image processing) are both provided with a hybrid keyboard, monitor and mouse. These consoles can be operated independently, and simultaneously parallel processing can significantly improve the efficiency of image processing and diagnosis. G Functions of the console for scanning Selection of scan parameters

Multislice HELICAL CT SCANNER

MULTI

The eXam Plan function allows simple selection of pre-programmed scanning parameters for routine examinations and for efficient patient throughput. The Vari-area function allows the user to pre-select a region of interest for zooming using raw data and immediate post-scan analysis. Zooming using raw data yields higher resolution than enlarging an already reconstructed image. Dynamic and rapid sequence scan modes. Multislice Helical Scan acquires raw data by rotating the X-ray tube continuously while moving the patient continuously through the scanner. A volume of data is acquired from which slices can be reconstructed at any point along the patient axis. This scan mode is best used for rapid patient scanning within one breath hold and for high definition three-dimensional and MPR imaging. Realtime helical reconstruction mode makes it possible to observe the images being scanned in real time at maximum 12 frames per second. This mode shows shift in the slice position in real time and helps the technician to check the scan field on the image, contrast study timing, presence of patient's body motion, etc. Therefore the patient can be released immediately after scanning. SureStart function helps the technician to initiate the helical scanning at peak enhancement timing of contrast study. SureStart starts monitoring the scan from the start of contrast study at a certain slice position, to monitor the change in CT number on the image being displayed in real time. When the contrast reaches the set value, the helical scan automatically starts. This technique provides contrast study at peak enhancement timing regardless of each patient's blood flow speed and also saves contrast medium.

Image display and processing

Reconstructed images are automatically displayed according to window settings preset in the eXam Plan. The window save function allows the user to store an image with window settings different from the ones set by the eXam Plan. Filter parameters can be customized through simple on-screen menu selections. These parameters include the number of filtering passes, matrix size and filter coefficients. Images can be rotated and reversed either right/left, top/bottom, or black/white. The Multi-frame feature allows up to 36 images to be retrieved and simultaneously displayed on the screen. The three-dimensional image display allows the generation of color three-dimensional and real time MPR images from the volumetric scan data acquired using Helical Scan. This results in higher definition and image quality than images reconstructed from conventional single slice scanning. This is because helical scanning achieves better data continuity along the patient axis than conventional scanning.

Image storage and archiving

The system comes with a 45 Gbyte magnetic hard disk as standard equipment allowing for the on-line storage of approximately 16,000 images with max. 4,000 rotations raw data. A 2.6 Gbyte magneto-optical disk is provided as standard equipment. A user-selectable automatic archive function can be enabled to automatically store images on the magneto-optical disk after reconstruction. The image storage capacity of the magnetooptical disk is approx. 9,600 images per disk.

Image filming Data processing

Rapid reconstruction reduces reconstruction time to as short as 0.5 second for 0.75 second scans. (Scan & View mode) A variety of reconstruction algorithms are available according to the anatomy being studied and the clinical objectives. These include algorithms for the abdomen, head, bone, lung, high-resolution, soft tissue, etc. Filming of images can be carried out manually or automatically from the console. Automatic filming sends an entire study to the laser camera. Filming is carried out in background mode so that other scanner and image processing functions can be performed without interruption or delay.

Patient throughput
Patient throughput and cost effectiveness have been given great consideration in designing and building the Aquilion CT scanner. The system incorporates a 4.0-MHU X-ray tube with a very fast cooling rate of max. 864 kHU/min.
