for percussion, violin and cello

Instrumentation:
percussion:
2 pairs of suspended glass chimes, bamboo chimes, and shell chimes (or metal non-pitched).
conga
small/medium sized bass drum
crotales (pitches Ab7-D#8)
suspended china cymbal
violin: mute needed, plus additional pitched wind chimes (supplied by composer)
cello: wooden mute needed, plus additional pitched wind chimes (supplied by composer)

General Comments:
-the percussion should be in between the violin and the cello, forming a semi-circle.
-the pauses in between the measures must be thought of in seconds, not as beats.
-interaction between players is the key to coordinating phrases, finding the small differences, perfecting the rhythms, emerging from
silences, etc. There is a sense of learning that occurs, where at each tempo change a new feel emerges after the first or second phrase.

Performance Notes
percussion:
- seated between strings
- top staff is always for right hand and bottom is always for left hand
-notation is spatial, whether it is rhythmically notated or not, notwithstanding tempo changes
-let everything ring freely
-dampen crotales by tying rubber bands around them. It should still ring, but not very long.
-dampen bass drum with a light towel, so it rings just for a second or so.
-when no mallet/bow is indicated, play with the tip of fingers. Scrape conga with nail
