CACTUS LEAGUE ACTION: The Padres enter todays game at 1-5 and are looking for their rst win over an American League opponent...over the Spring slate, the Friars play a total of 34 games in Arizona before heading home for a workout on 4/2 followed by two games against the Royals (4/3 at Petco Park and 4/4 in Lake Elsinore)...including yesterday, the clubs Cactus League schedule includes six split-squad games (March 7, 14, 18, 24, 27, 31). BIG NEWS FOR PEORIA: In a press conference on Monday, the Padres, Mariners and the city of Peoria announced plans to extend their relationship, keeping Spring Training baseball at the Peoria Sports Complex until 2034...the Padres have called Peoria home since relocating from Yuma in 1994. FREEWAY FOES: The Padres and Angels will face each other three times during the regular season (May18-20), with the Angels making their rst trip to Petco Park. LAST TIME OUT: The Padres dropped a 5-2 decision to the Giants yesterday at the Peoria Sports Complex...the Friars two runs came on solo shots by Kyle Blanks and James Darnell...Blanks blast sailed through the camera window in the center eld wall...on the mound, six Padres pitchers combined to allow ve runs (four earned) while striking out eight...Anthony Bass (2.0), Micah Owings (2.0) and Brad Boxberger (1.0) each did not allow an earned run in their outings. TODAYS STARTER: Left-hander Clayton Richard makes his Cactus League debut this afternoon, making him the last Padres pitcher to appear in a game this Spring...he made 18 starts for San Diego in 2011 before undergoing season-ending arthroscopic surgery on his left-shoulder...was originally placed on the 15-day DL 7/5 and transferred to the 60-day DL 8/26...Richard is entering his fourth season (third full season) with the Padres after being acquired from the Chicago White Sox at the 2009 trade deadline. SWING AND MISS: The Padres pitching staff has worked 52.0 innings over their six games this Spring, striking out 47 opponents over that span...they are averaging 8.1 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched. THE FUTURE: Eight of the Padres top 10 prospects, according to Baseball America, are in camp this Spring...that list includes INF Yonder Alonso (1), C Yasmani Grandal (2), OF Rymer Liriano (3), RHP Casey Kelly (4), INF Cory Spangenberg (5), INF Jedd Gyorko (7), RHP Joe Wieland (8) and LHP Robbie Erlin (9)...Baseball America also recently released their rankings of the top 100 prospects in baseball, including Alonso (33), Grandal (53), Kelly (76), Spangenberg (78) and Gyorko (98). ROSTER TALK: The Padres have 61 players in Big League camp... with a full 40-man roster and 21 non-roster invitees, the Padres squad features 29 pitchers (eight southpaws), seven catchers, 15 inelders and 10 outelders...entering camp, the Padres have 16 players on the 40-man roster that were not at the beginning of 2011 Spring Training. ROOKIE ROUND-UP: 29 of the 61 players in camp will qualify as rookies in the 2012 season, with 13 of those 29 on the 40-man roster...the 113consist of Brad Brach, Erik Hamren, Nick Vincent, Jose De Paula, Juan Oramas, Yasmani Grandal, James Darnell, Andy Parrino, Edinson Rincon, Cory Spangenberg, Jeudy Valdez, Rymer Liriano and Blake Tekotte.
