FEATURED ARTICLE: OPSEC

While your spouse, significant other, son or daughter is in the military, OPSEC (Operational Security) applies to you-whether they are deployed or home, on leave, or in school. It is important for all family members to keep OPSEC in mind in all they say and do when it pertains to their service members and their families. By practicing OPSEC, we keep our family members safe from those who wish to do us harm. From Navy.mil: When communicating on social media sites do not post the following information: Exact deployment dates or return dates. This applies to ships, subs, squadrons and individual augmentees, and includes countdown timers and days left

posts. Dates or location of a ship's upcoming ports of call. Detailed information about a mission. References to trends in crew's morale or an individual's personal problems. (1)

What You Can Do Review your Facebook status updates and remove posts that provide critical information about yourself and your service member. Take advantage of Facebooks privacy and list settings. Routinely change your passwords and password-protect your electronic devices. Practice Makes Perfect Maintaining OPSEC means preparing yourself. Practice does make perfect. Practice what you will say to a question someone asks before you say it. Allow yourself a little more time to answer questions or think about what you are discussing so that you can review it for OPSEC. Consider where you are and who may be listening. Take an extra second or two to read that status update before you post it. When in doubt, err on the side of caution.

UNITED THROUGH READING

Did you know the USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) is participating in United Through Reading? This program allows deployed personnel the opportunity to read stories aloud on DVD to their loved ones back home. Recordings are held Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday evenings in the ships classroom. Anyone who wants to make a video will have the opportunity to do so. Please ask your sailors to sign up and send home a recording! Sailors can select a book from the Commands childrens book library or read a book they have packed with them. They are recorded while reading the book, and then the DVD (and book if owned by the Sailor) is sent home to the child who can watch and follow along with a copy of the book. Your child can view the recording over and over again. Please share your experiences or pictures of your children viewing your video with your UTR Homefront Coordinator.
