I B.Tech(ccc) Regular Examinations, December 2007 SURVEYING (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks:100 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks 1. (a) What do you understand by balancing of traverse? Describe any three methods of adjusting the traverse. [10+10] (b) Find the coordinates of the point at which a line run from A on a bearing of N 100 E will cut the given traverse, and nd the length of this line. Line Latitude Departure N S E W AB 1650 440 BC 2875 120 CD 3643 226 DE 1450 376 EA 0 0 2. An instrument was set up at P and the angle of depression to a vane 2 m above the foot of the sta held at Q was 50 36 . The horizontal distance between P and Q was known. to be 2500 meters. Determine the R.L. of the sta station Q given that sta reading on a B.M. of elevation 436.050 was 2.865 meters. [20] 3. (a) Draw a neat sketch and derive from the rst principle an expression for the horizontal distance between a tacheometer and a vertically held sta for a horizontal line of sight. (b) The top of a hill subtends an angle of 90 30 at a point A. The same point on the top of the hill subtends an angle of 120 30 at a point B which is in direct line joining point A and top of the ll. Distance AB was measured and found to be 1600 m. Determine the elevation of the top of the hill and its horizontal distance from A. given the elevation of point A is 430.650 m. [10+10]

4. (a) What are the dierent instrumental methods available to set out a simple circular curve. Explain in detail the Tacheometric method to set out a curve in the eld. (b) A compound curve is to consist of an arc of 900 m radius followed by one of the 1200 m radius and is to connect two straights intersecting at an angle of 860 32 . At the intersection point the chainage, if continued along the rst tangent would be 2329.20 m and the starting point of the curve is selected at chainage 1354.20 m. Calculate the chainage at the junction point of the two branches and at the end of the curve. [10+10] 5. (a) A reverse curve of two equal circular arcs is to connect two parallel tangents, 9 m apart. If the distance between the connected points parallel to the straights is 81 m, nd the radius of the arcs. 1 of 2

(b) A reverse curve is to be set out between two parallel tangents 30 m apart. The line joining the two tangent points is 300 m. The two arcs of the curve have the same radius. Calculate the necessary data to set the curve on the eld by osets from a long chord at intervals of 20 m from the common tangent point. [10+10] 6. (a) Describe Base Line Measurement. What are the points which have to be considered in selection of site for base line measurements. (b) A base line was measured between two points A and B at an average elevation of 224.35m. The corrected length after applying all corrections was 149.3206 m. Reduce the length to mean sea level. Take earths mean radius 6367 km. [10+10] 7. (a) Explain the principle of Electronic measuring devices. Also discuss the classication of EDM instruments. (b) Describe the principle and working of Laser Level.

8. (a) Explain how the ground coordinates of points whose images appear in a vertical photograph are determined. (b) A pair of photographs was taken with an aerial camera from an altitude of 4000 m above MSL. The mean principal base measured is 88 mm. The dierence in parallax between two points is 1.5 mm. Determine the dierence in height between the two points if the elevation of the lower point is 450 m above MSL. Calculate the dierence in elevation corresponding to parallax dierence of 1.9 mm.
