PHYSICS 218, Mechanics SYLLABUS, Spring 2012, Sections 507-512, 518-522

Co-requisites: Instructor:
MATH 151. You are expected to have a working knowledge of plane geometry, trigonometry, and algebra. As the semester progresses you will also be expected to have a working knowledge of derivatives and integrals, and be proficient in the use of vectors (addition, subtraction, dot and cross products). Prof. Vitaly Kocharovsky (office: MPHY 557; phone: 862-1652; e-mail: vkochar@physics.tamu.edu , website: http://faculty.physics.tamu.edu/vkochar/ ) Lectures: MWF 10:20-11:10 (sections 518-522) and MWF 11:30-12:20 (sections 507-512) at MPHY 203 Office hours: MWF 12:20 13:20, and by appointment. (i) University Physics", v. 1, 13th ed. by Young and Freedman; (ii) Lab manual Laboratory (Kinematics) Experiments for Physics 218", 10th ed. by Ramirez&Hiebert published by Hayden-McNeil (sect. 507-512); Visual Physics laboratories manuals - available at http://visual.physics.tamu.edu/ (sections 518-522). Recitation meets in MPHY room 335 (sections 507-512) or room 336 (sections 518-522) for the first hour, and is followed by a Laboratory session in MPHY room 234 (sections 507-512) or room 236 (sections 518-522) the remaining two hours. No Lab sessions or Reports will be dropped. Students retaking the course should contact Physics Front Office immediately in order to transfer the grade for Lab if passed in a previous semester with a grade of 80 or better. Students retaking the course do not have to repeat the Lab but they are required to attend Recitation and take weekly quizzes. Note: There will be no recitation or lab meetings during the first week of the semester. 1. For each chapter there is a set of homework problems listed in the Tentative Course Schedule on the next page and assigned to you to practice problem-solving techniques. 2. In addition there are WebCT homework problems and math and homework quizzes that are a required part of the course. They are to be turned in and graded by WebCT at http://elearning.tamu.edu. Instructions on using WebCT are at http://faculty.physics.tamu.edu/toback/WebCT/. You may take as many tries on each as you like, but a perfect score on each is required to pass the course. You are expected to work homework problems each week before recitation and there will be a quiz each week in recitation to test your ability to work one of the assigned homework problems. After recitation, you will turn in weekly homework assignments on WebCT. If you get perfect scores on all of the math quizzes, homework and associated homework quizzes, a mini-practice exam will become available to you to help study for each exam. There will be three midterm exams and one final exam. (a) The midterms will be given during regular class hours; the final exam is comprehensive and lasts for 2 hours. Each exam will generally consist of problems similar in content and difficulty to the homework. The entire solution will be graded and partial credit given if merited. Your work must show the steps toward the solution; the answer alone is not sufficient. The grader will judge your use of physics in arriving at the solution. (b) Formula sheets will be provided for each exam and the final. (c) You will need to bring a calculator to the exams. (d) If you miss an exam due to an authorized excused absence as outlined in the University Regulations, then you must contact your instructor no later than the next class meeting following the missed exam to arrange for a makeup exam. Note: Very few conditions qualify as an authorized excused absence, so avoid missing an exam at all costs. The instructor reserves the right to administer an oral examination in place of a written one if any circumstance places either a written examination or an absence in question. (e) You must bring your student ID with you to all exams for identification purposes. Exam grades may be curved depending on special conditions of a particular exam. In no case will a curve result in a lower letter grade than the standard 90-100% A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C, 60-69% D, and <60% F. Total course grade consists of 750 points distributed as follows: 3 Midterm Exams (75, 100, 100) Final Exam Laboratory Recitations and Quizzes WebCT Homework and Math Quizzes Total: 275 200 100 100 75 750

NOTE: If your final exam grade is higher than the lowest of your three midterm exams, then the final exam grade will replace the grade for that midterm exam. You must pass both the lecture (3 midterm exams, final exam, homework, recitations and quizzes) and laboratory ( >=70% ) parts of the course separately in order to pass the course.

ADA Policy: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal anti-discrimination statute that provides comprehensive civil rights
protection for persons with disabilities. Among other things, this legislation requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides for reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring an accommodation, please contact Disability Services, in Cain Hall, Room B118, or call 979-845-1637.
