At the airport

Getting from airport to your hotel

Licensed Taxis Once in the arrival hall, go down one oor and exit the building. Look for the taxis queue. Go to the ocial taxi booth where you will be asked your destination (in English) and assigned to a taxi by a dispatcher. The dispatcher will give you a ticket with the taxis registration number written on it. Keep this in case you have a complaint or if you accidently leave something in the car.

In addition to the fare on the meter, there is an airport surcharge of 50 baht and expressway tolls of 65 baht. The total cost, including the surcharge and tolls is likely to be around 300 to 400 baht depending on downtown destination.
Some drivers may ask for toll money in advance so have some small change available (such as a 100 baht note). Journey time can be anything between 40 minutes and 2 hours depending on the trac conditions. Most taxis do not have seat belts and are driven very fast. Luggage space in the trunk is usually limited as most taxis are tted with an LPG tank. AOT Ocial Airport Limo Service - Recommended for rst time visitors. Look for the ocial AOT service desks in the baggage hall of the arrivals area. The price for a standard salon starts at 1000 baht to downtown Bangkok including motorway tolls. Pay at the AOT service desk and receive an ocial receipt. You will be escorted to your car. Generally higher driving standards and seat beats! Avoid all others trying to sell taxi or limo services. Airport Link Two train services operate from the airport to downtown Bangkok. Express trains take 15 minutes to travel non-stop to Makkasan Station in the city (which has a connection with the MRT). An express train ticket costs 150 baht. From Makkasan, get a taxi to your hotel. A surprisingly inconvenient option, particularly if you have a lot of luggage. City trains make seven stops, takes 30 minutes, but continues on one stop to Payathai which has a more useful direct interchange with BTS Skytrain. A City train to Payathai costs 45 baht could be a convenient option if you are travelling light. 2

Bangkoks Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) The airport consists of a single terminal building with seven connected concourses. There can be quite a long walk from your gate to the arrival area. International Flights Prior to landing, you will be given an immigration form and customs declaration to complete, so keep a pen, your passport and note of your hotel address within easy reach. After disembarking the airplane, follow the signs to luggage reclaim. You will eventually arrive at the immigration area. Expect queues during busy periods. Present your immigration card and passport to an ocer. First and business class passengers should turn right to the VIP immigration desks. Immediately behind immigration is the baggage reclaim area. Locate your luggage and proceed through customs. Custom ocers randomly select bags to be put through an x-ray machine.

HOT TIP - There are TWO exits from custom into the arrival area: Exit B and C. If you are meeting someone, agree in advance which exit you will use. A Meeting Point is signposted in the arrival area; however, this is located further down the terminal building and not particularly convenient for international passengers. Domestic After disembarking, follow the signs to luggage reclaim. Collect your bags and exit to the arrival area. You will pass through Exit A.

Getting around Bangkok

Taxis Taxis are cheap and plentiful 24 hours a day. Strangely, a RED light in the front windscreen means the taxi is available for hire. The meter starts at a very reasonable 35 baht, with no ocial surcharges for nights or weekends. A small tip is expected. Most drivers do not speak English. If your destination is a well-known hotel, shopping mall, or street like Silom then it is likely the driver will understand you. Speak slowly and clearly. If not, jump out and try another. BTS - Sky Train The fastest and most comfortable way to travel around the city centre particularly during rush hour. If you are staying for more than a few days, buy a Smart Card. The card can be charged up with 15, 25, 35 or 45 trips. The card costs 30 baht and 25 trips will cost 550 baht. Economical and more convenient than buying single tickets. MRT Bangkok has a single underground line. Its route is less useful for tourists staying in the city centre.

Motorcycle At the end of each street, you usually see motorcycles with riders wearing numbered jackets. You can ask one to take you down the street for a small fee usually about 10 or 20 baht. Handy, but use a helmet. Buses Bangkok has an extensive bus network but drivers usually only speak Thai. You need to know the route in advance. Not really tourist friendly. For the bus route, visit http://www.bmta.co.th/en/bus_info.php Express ferry The ferry route starts from a pier underneath Saphan Taksin BTS station, passing many of Bangkok landmarks such as the old Oriental hotel, Memorial bridge, Grand palace, and Temple of Dawn. It is a great way to see the best of Bangkok from a dierent perspective, especially at dawn. The ferry runs along the right bank ofthe river (with smaller ferries crossing the river at each stopping point) and runs until 7pm only.

Where to stay in Bangkok

Its not just the guys that are hot the city can be too. So choosing a hotel that is close to a BTS station is a good idea. You probably do not want to be too far from Silom the main gay area, or the fabulous shops. We favour hotels and serviced apartments (basically hotels that oer suites rather than just bedrooms) in or around Silom Road area as far as Soi 12, Sala Daeng area, Surawong Road. Sathon Road within walking distance of Chong Nonsi BTS station or Khlong Toe MTR station. Ratchandemri Road or Lang Suan Road or any of the connecting streets. All the hotels we list below are gay-friendly in fact, it would be dicult to nd a hotel in Bangkok that was not. But some are just a little bit more special than others. You can get latest rates and pictures for these hotels at www.travelgayasia.com/destination/gay-thailand/gay-bangkok Give yourself a treat.. Le Meridien, Surawong Road $$$$$ The closest 5-star hotel to the gay bars and clubs of Silom. Ultra chic design. Although only recently opened, the hotel has acquired a reputation for excellent service. When you stumble out of DJ Station or GOD, you dont need a taxi to get you home. Siam Kempinski, 991/1 Rama 1 Road, Bangkok $$$$$ Not quite within our favoured area, but this hotel is setting new standards in Bangkok. It oozes class. Discreetly name dropping the Siam Kempinski into a chat up line can work wonders. Located behind the Paragon Shopping Mall, and just a few minutes walk to the central Siam BTS station. The Kempinskis Sra Bua restaurant has recently been awarded a Michelin Star. Dusit Thani, Silom $$$$$ This grand old dame of Bangkok has recently had a facelift. The lobby and rooms have been refurbished and the new look is bringing her clients back. Excellent location just two minutes walk from Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4. Silom MRT station is right next to the hotels entrance and the BTS Sala Daeng station is very close. The Ascott, Sathorn $$$$ A 5-star serviced apartment hotel that oers a good standard of accommodation. Great door sta, an utterly amazingly gym, and nice sunny pool. If you want access to a seriously good gym, then The Ascott could be a great choice for you. Close to BTS Chong Nonsi station which is just one stop from Silom (Sala Daeng). Anantara Baan Rajprasong, Rajdamri Road $$$$ A modern 5-star serviced apartment hotel. Excellent location for both Silom and the main shopping centers. Most apartments have great city views. Very close to Ratchadamri BTS, which is one stop from Silom (Sala Daeng) and one stop in the other direction to the Paragon Shopping Mall. It has a small gym and pool, although the terrace does not get much direct sun light. TheSukhothai Hotel, 13/3 South Sathorn Road $$$$ The Sukhothai continues to be a favourite with discerning gay travellers, many of whom come back year after year. Consequently, the hotels pool and sun terrace is still a place to see and be seen (particularly at the weekend). The fact that the Sukhothai is within walking distance of Babylon helps too.

St. Regis Bangkok $$$$$ We watched the new St. Regis rise above Rajadamri Road in central Bangkok with a growing sense of anticipation. This hotel was pretty much assured of making it onto our luxury list before it opened its doors earlier this year (2011). This hotel has, in our opinion, the best location of any 5-star hotel in Bangkok overlooking the beautiful Royal Bangkok Sports club. The major shopping malls are within walking distance and the Silom nightlife is just one stop on the BTS (the BTS station is just outside the hotel). The height of the building gives The St. Regis a signicant advantage over the much older Four Seasons located next door.

VALUE+
I Residence $$ A contemporary-styled, yet comfortable hotel located about a 10-minute walk from the Silom gay scene and close to sauna Mania. If it gets too hot to walk, then the bars are just one stop on the BTS line from the Chong Nonsi station (located right outside the hotel). Warm and welcoming attitude towards gay customers. The Heritage $$$$ Great value, very gay-friendly 4-star hotel, located about a 10-minute walk from the Silom gay scene and close to sauna Mania. Like the I Residence, the BTS Chong Nonsi station is just next door. The Heritage has modern rooms with ats creen TV and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a small pool, sun terrace, tness room and a choice of restaurants and bars. Very popular choice with Travel Gay Asia visitors. 4

Where to stay in Bangkok

VALUE+
Bangkok Lumpini Park Crowne Plaza $$$$ This 4-star hotel is just a few minutes walk from the DJ Station, GOD, Telephone Bar and all the other venues in Silom Soi 2 & 4. The Sala Deang BTS and Lumpini Park MRT stations are equally close. The Crowne Plaza is elevated above the noise of the city. The check-in desk is on the 23rd oor, and the rooms are even higher. The rooms are spacious with cable TV, DVD, tea & coee making facilities and a comfortable bed. Club Floor rooms have a dedicated check-in area, and guests have access to the Club Lounge that oers free drinks and snacks all day long. There is a small, but well-equipped gym and a rooftop pool with sun loungers. Baan Saladaeng $$$ A very gay-friendly boutique guesthouse on a quiet side street, less than 5 minutes walk from bars and clubs of Silom 2 and 4 and the BTS Sala Deang station. Baan Saladeang has 11 dierent en suite rooms, each with its own unique cool and contemporary style. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and a great range of restaurants and coee shops can be found close by. The combination of great location, aordability and a really warm welcome for gay customers make Baan Saladaeng a popular choice. Ibis Hotel, Sathorn $$ Basic but conveniently located for both the bars and clubs on Silom and for quick trips to Babylon. It is a modern hotel with reasonablesized rooms and comfortable beds. Popular with gay Asian tourists. Tarntawan Place $$ The Tarntawan Place has a loyal following of gay travellers who keep on coming back year after year. Located in a quiet street, just moments from main gay areas of Silom 2 and 4, as well as Soi Twilight. All of the hotels comfortable rooms and suites have free Wi-Fi, cable TV and a fully stocked minibar. Room service is available 24 hours a day. Novotel Bangkok Fenix Silom $$$ Opened in September 2010 and already proven popular with gay tourists. Oers competitively priced, comfortable rooms, a gym, an outdoor pool and sun terrace. Relatively close to the Silom gay scene although it is a bit too far to walk. However, it is only a few minutes by taxi and the cost will be close to the minimum fee of 35 baht. Babylon Barrack B&B $$ Babylon, Bangkoks most famous gay sauna, oers a range of bed and breakfast accommodation. Barrack rooms are located a low-rise tower block directly above the sauna. Each oor consists of a number of rooms that share a large common bathroom & shower area. This provides plenty of opportunity to socialise with other guests. A number of larger, more upmarket bedroom suites with private facilities are also available. All guests get free access to the Sauna. A popular choice for those who like to stay close to all the action. The Rose Hotel, 118 Surawong Road $$$ A hidden gem within Silom located directly behind the Le Meridien. This gay owned hotel is less than 5 minutes walk from Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4. The Rose Hotel has a lovely terrace and swimming pool area. Contemporary -styled rooms. The Ruen Urai Thai restaurant, featured in our list of favourites, is within The Rose Hotels grounds. Lub d , 4 Decho Road, Suriyawong $ Modern, clean and comfortable budget hostel. Helpful, young and gay-friendly sta. Lub d oers bunk beds in dormitories or private double rooms. Free Wi-Fi. Lub d has a coee shop, although there is a huge choice of places to eat cheaply close by. Ten-minute walk from the gay bars in Silom. Vincents Restaurant & The 7 Rooms Hotel $ This very gay-friendly and great value guesthouse is a short taxi ride from the gay scene in Silom but within walking distance of Babylon and an MRT station. Simply furnished but comfortable rooms, all with air conditioning, TV and free Wi-Fi. Vincents Restaurant serves some pretty good Thai food (closed Sundays). HQ Hostel, Silom $ Good quality budget hostel accommodation in Silom. Very convenient for the bars and clubs around Silom Soi 2 and Soi 4. Choice of beds in 6 or 10 bed dormitories or double bed in your own room. Free Wi-Fi available.

Weather
The generally cooler and more comfortable months are mid-November through to end of February, although there may only be a couple of genuinely cool days during these months. Summer really kicks in during April and May with temperatures reaching 40c or more. The hot and humid rainy season kicks in from May until October. And boy, when it rains, it really does rain. Frequent and erce.

Bangkok has a very vibrant gay scene, from bars and night clubs to saunas and massage spas

What to wear and pack

Day wear Shorts, jeans, tee shirts, polo shirts combined with trainers, comfortable shoes or scandals . A cap or hat to cover your head is essential. Temple wear If you are planning to visit a temple or the Grand Palace then you must wear clothes that cover your legs and arms. Evening wear (restaurant / bars) Jeans or slacks, tee shirt or polo shirt, trainers or casual shoes. Club wear Short or jeans, tee shirts or tank tops, trainers or similar. Clubs will refuse entry if you are wearing scandals or ip ops. Business wear Smart trousers and open neck formal shirt. Ties and jackets are not normally worn unless its a very formal environment. Sauna wear towels will be provided but bring your own ip ops. Sex wear - Condoms are widely available in Bangkok, however, the choice of lubricants is limited so bringing your own is a good idea. Poppers are not sold in Thailand.

Bangkoks established and lively mainstream gay scene consists of bars, nightclubs and men-only saunas where you can meet a wide variety of gay guys from both Thailand and abroad. A few of these venues are more popular with Asians who are attracted to Asians, but generally speaking, everyone is welcome at them all. Most gay Thais that you meet will be well-educated and speak very good English. Making new friends or picking up will simply be down to mutual attraction. There is a separate commercial scene consisting of go-go & host bars and massage spas. Many of the guys at these venues will be straight and their knowledge of English may be quite limited.

If you are planning to visit a temple or the Grand Palace, then you must wear clothes that cover your legs and arms.

Culture and Customs Thais have their own distinct cultural heritage and social norms. Whilst many Thais have learnt to accept foreigner attitudes, you will earn a lot more respect by remembering these two specic points. Keep the passion private. Public displays of aection, gay or straight, are generally frowned upon. Trying to stick three inches of tongue down your new Thai friends throat in a public place (including a gay bar or club) is likely to cause him to choke with embarrassment.

Hot Tip
Wine, and in particular champagne, is very expensive in Thailand. You are permitted to bring 1 litre into the country duty free, and we recommend you make use of this allowance. Buy duty free at the point of departure. Spirits such as gin and vodka, and cigarettes are relatively cheap in Thailand and not worth importing.

Dont get angry, keep a smile on your face. Thais place a great deal of emphasis on avoiding confrontation and endeavouring not to embarrass either themselves or other people. Raising your voice or acting in an aggressive manner (for example towards bar sta or a waiter in a restaurant) will be viewed by your companion / date as rude and embarrassing. In any case, such an approach is unlikely to resolve any diculties you might have.

The main gay area in Bangkok is centred around Silom. Most of the bars and clubs are located either in or close to Soi 2 (Street 2)and Soi 4. The closest BTS Station is Sala Deang on the Silom Line.
Silom Soi2
Patio Disco Disco JJ Park The Expresso DJ Station Club caf

The 100% gay Soi 2 has a narrow entrance with a bag check and metal detector. The minimum age is 20 years old. If you are lucky enough to be or look younger than 30, then we recommend bringing photo ID particularly if you are Asian. The Soi consists of a number of nominally dierent bars. However, as the night progresses the patrons of the The Patio , Club Caf , Disco Disco , The Expresso , and JJ Park move back and forward between each venue, along with their drinks. The bars get busy from around 11pm onwards. Tank tops and shorts are ne, but you will not get in wearing ip ops or similar. DJ Station is located at the far end of the Soi and attracts a wide range of Thais, foreign residents, and visitors. Its busy every night of the week and packed solid on weekends. Tourists are usually charged an entrance fee (200 baht) but are given coupons for two free drinks (which would cost 100 baht each anyway). Westerners and Asians who want to mix with Westerners tend to head for the second oor. The ground oor, particularly around the stage, tends to be more popular with Asians who prefer Asians. Closing time can vary but is usually around 3am. GOD is located down an narrow street between Soi 2 and Soi 4. If you need directions, just ask anyone leaving DJ Station. Its a good chat-up line if nothing else. This dance club has three oors, although even on busy nights most people stay on the ground or 2nd oor. Harder dance music is delivered by talented DJs that quickly gets the muscle packed dance oor and stage heaving. The club gets busier from around 2 2.30am as DJ Station winds down. Entrance fee (usually around 300 Baht) gets you two drink tickets. DRUGS The penalties for possession or consumption of illegal drugs are severe. Police will occasionally raid bars and clubs and carry out spot checks including urine tests. Anyone testing positive will be arrested and will face prosecution. Getting Home Taxis are always available in Silom. Unfortunately, the drivers that wait just outside the clubs will quote a price that exceeds what you would be expected to pay on the meter. Haggle a bit if you are up to it, or just cross the street and ag down a passing taxi. Remember that after 10 vodka red bulls YOU might think you can pronounce the name of your hotel in perfect Thai, but the driver will probably not understand a word of what you are slurring. Take a card with your hotel name and address written in Thai and hand it to the driver.Better still, leave with someone who speaks the language. 7

Saunas are mainstream established as part of gay life in Bangkok. Virtually all oer steam rooms, saunas and a darkened maze of cabins in which you can get intimate with with a new-found friend. Most saunas are well maintained venues oering a wide range facilities that also serve as a place friends can meet up for a drink and a chat, or maybe a bit of sunbathing in a relaxed, 100% gay environment.

Here is our guide to the best.

Babylon It is no big secret that the extensive maze of corridors, darkened steam room, sauna, plunge pool and numerous private cabins makes Babylon the biggest gay attraction in the city. But what makes Babylon really stand out is the range and quality of the services and facilities on oer. You can top up your tan on the sun terrace, practice your breast stroke in the pool, pump up in the well-equipped gym, enjoy a meal at the surprisingly good restaurant, down a cocktail or two in the comfortable bar areas, or simply unwind in the capable hands of an expert masseur. Bring ip ops, and gym gear if you want to use the gym. Otherwise, everyone just wears a towel (provided). Lockers and locks are provided, but leave valuables at your hotel. Management sensibly promotes safer sex by providing free condoms and lube in each locker. Surawong Road, and in particular a side street called Soi Pratcuchai (also know as Soi Twilight) is home to Bangkok's go-go and host bars. The closest BTS station is Sala Daeng on the Silom Line.
Go-go bars have shows every hour or so that can be fun to watch if not taken too seriously. The content can range from erotic dancing to routines that leave little to the imagination. Jupiter Bar in Silom has a reputation for being more at the fun and entertaining range of the spectrum, with bars like Tawan (Silom Soi 6) featuring more muscle guys and being more erotic. In host bars, you pay for the company of a scantily clad guy by (initially) purchasing both yourself and him a drink. A further tip will be expected when you leave. Prostitution is illegal in Thailand. However in reality most of the guys will be happy to leave with you to continue the evening somewhere else like your hotel room. You will need to pay a fee (ne) to the bar owner ( typically 500 baht) plus whatever you agree with the guy for his time and energies (typically 1000 to 1500 baht). Take all necessary precautions. Treat your guy with respect and dignity. Do not ask for unprotected sex. Some guys working in the go-go and host bars look young. It is your personal responsibility to ensure that the guy is over the age of 18. Ask for photo ID if in any doubt. Sex with a minor is a serious criminal oense and the police have, quite rightly, been cracking down on this completely unacceptable practice.

These are not to be confused with mainstream saunas and spas. Most massage spas oer a wide range of guys for you to choose from. The manager (known as the Captain) will advise in some detail the type of service each guy oers and the price. The price will consist of the fee for the massage payable to the front desk and a tip to the guy providing the service. Expect to pay between 600 900 baht for a one-hour oil massage, plus a minimum tip to the masseur of up to1000 baht per hour or more. Many spas oer a 4 hands option, where you get serviced by 2 masseurs of your choice. Both masseurs will expect to be tipped at the end of your session.

The Olympic Club at the Pathumwan Princess Hotel. Attracts a large number of gay members. Reasonable range of gym / cardio equipment, steam room and sauna, together with nice hotel pool and terrace access. Gym (and sauna) gets busier around 5pm in the evenings. Daily (around 600 baht) and one monthly (around 5000 baht) memberships available. Price includes towels and locker. BTS National Stadium

So you fancy a change of scenery for a day? Here are a couple of our favourite gay day tours from Bangkok.
Ayutthaya Visit the stunningly beautiful and ancient capital of Siam. Explore the palaces, temples and monuments of what was once a prosperous city. Highlights include visiting the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace and garden and the Ayutthaya Historical Park. Organised day trips can be booked through the concierge of most hotels. The Ancient City and Croc Farm If you are in a rush but would like to see all the best cultural bits of Thailand, then The Ancient City at Samut Prakarn is the place for you. This park features very good replicas of some of Thailands most historical sites. Then cross the road to visit Samut Prakarn Crocodile Farm for some exciting man on reptile wrestling action. See http://www.ancientcity.com for more details. Most taxi drivers will drive you to Samut Prakarn and wait until you are ready to return. Floating Market This oating Walmart is located about 100km outside the city. Heavily promoted by tour organisers and a bit of a tourist trap. We mention this only to suggest it is best avoided. Pattaya Beach and Boys. A potent combination that is less than 2 hours drive from Bangkok. Head for the north end of Jomtien Beach. This part of the beach is very gay and gets busier as the afternoon progresses. There are a number of beach bars catering to the gay community. Many Bangkok taxi drivers will be happy to wisk you to Pattaya for around 1200 1500 Baht one way. Most taxi drivers in Pattaya will be happy to bring you back to Bangkok for the same sort of fee. Or perhaps a weekend break? Check out the beautiful Samed Island located just o the coast near Rayong three hours by car from Bangkok. Increasingly popular gay weekend destination. See http://www.travelgayasia.com/destination/gay-thailand/gay-samed/ for more details. 13

California WOW Operate a number of gyms around Bangkok. Silom and Sukhumvit 23 tend to attract the largest gay crowds. Both can get crowded at peak times. Short term membership costs 500 baht per day or 1500 baht per week

The Ascott Cascades Club This one is for the serious gym bunny. Quite possibly one of the best-equipped and wellmaintained gyms anywhere in Asia. Nice pool and terrace as well. Premium membership prices, together with its slightly less convenient location on Sathorn means this gym never gets too busy. Very helpful sta. Daily membership 530 baht. Monthly 7,000 baht. BTS Chong Nonsee Babylon Babylon has a relatively small, but reasonably-equipped gym. Naturally 100% gay . If you are planning to use the gym, bring your kit and trainers as trying to work out in just a towel is dicult. MRT Lumpini

Eating out is a way of life in Bangkok. There are literally thousands of places to get something to eat from street vendors to Michelin-starred ultra cool restaurants, so you are going to be spoilt for choice. Most people tend to have dinner between 7pm to 10pm, with last orders generally taken around 11pm. Some restaurants around Silom will stay open much later.
