Globalization has made tremendous changes in the world & concept of Energy
Conservation left behind by doing Energy Audits. Energy saved is Energy
Generated the global mantra now in this world. Energy is essential to life & its
conservation has become as absolute necessity. The requirement of energy
has gone up in last few years & would touch unimaginable preparation of
population explosion & improvement of living standards.
Energy Audits mean lot of things & common meaning are :

from higher volt to lower volt & vice versa. There are two types of losses in
transformer [a] No load losses (Iron losses), which is constant & [b] Variable
losses i.e. Copper losses, which varies at square of load on Transformer &
temperature. According to IS 2026:1962, gives Transformer losses. It is generally
recommended to keep loading on Transformer between 45 to 50 %.

Iron Losses (No load losses) = Hysterics Losses + Eddy Current Losses
Iron losses, the eddy current in the Transformer core material produces
eddy current losses. They depend upon the thickness of the core material.
Manufacturing the core into very fine thin sheet & laminating these fine sheets of
the core. While Hysterics losses are the heat losses generated due to magnetizing
& demagnetizing. The Higher the resistance observed by the core molecules in
magnetizing & demagnetizing, the higher would be Higher would be heat loss
(Hysterics loss). Consequently, no load Losses would be higher. Hysterics Losses
can only be controlled by the core material, which has low amount of heat losses
when its molecules experience magnetizing & demagnetizing cycle. For that,
amorphous core material serves purpose.
Amorphous metal exhibit a structure in which the metallic molecules occur
in a random pattern & have non-crystalline alloy steel just like glass. As there are
no grains, the fluxes experience least resistance in any direction. As opposed to
the rigid grain structure of the silicon steel, this unique structure enables easy
magnetizing & demagnetizing. Thus, easier the magnetic switching, the lower the
core loss would be.

Better Short Circuit Strength : The unique feature of the Transformer is the
rectangular winding made from copper sheet. As a result of the construction the
axial component of the Short circuit forces are almost eliminated.
Special
compacting & epoxy bonding between the layers makes the entire coil as one
homogeneous mass, which has better withstanding capability of the radial

Observations : The M/s Bank of Baroda has installed fix type Capacitor bank &
APFC to maintained instant power factor & never achieved Avg. power factor more
than 0.97. This is due to change in load pattern of process machinery. The
Reactive power factor system requires modifications to achieve power factor near
to unity. Some of the capacitors are found Derated which need replacement.
Transformer compensation fixed capacitors shown above should be installed.
Below show the reduction in Transformer losses by improving power factor.
Measurement shows the poor power factor, which need to be improve.

Over stressing of capacitors during light loads may leads to capacitor drift/
Derating there by reducing useful life.
Capacitor life is enhanced as No inrush current due to precise auto zero voltage
search logic. No current or Voltage surge. Hence life of Transformer increases.
The RTPFC dismisses the need of manpower and any sort of supervision.
The RTPFC dismisses the need to switch off capacitor on D G set. i.e.
reduction in losses. It also reduces the Copper losses in Transformer by
maintaining constant PF.

Conclusion:
Any energy conservation goal will be successful only when all the
employees in the plant will involve. To full fill the task for energy accounting,
Engineers are motivated for energy accounting scheme effectively & trained
appropriately and encourage their support and give them awards for their energy
saving initiative. It can there fore be seen that taking an Energy Audits will be
extremely beneficial to all consumers whether it is Industries, Hotels or domestic
consumers. Energy audit are one of those happy tasks which while leading to
immediate improvement in the profitability and economic viability of the industries.
It also benefit to the nation to use scarce resources more efficiently.

2.1.5 Harmonics:
Major causes of Harmonics: Devices that draw non-sinusoidal currents
when a sinusoidal voltage is applied create harmonics. Frequently these devices
develop that convert AC to DC. How ever in real life situation varies devices like,
diodes, silicon control rectifiers, PWM system, Thyrister, Voltage & Current
chopping Induction & Arc furnaces, are also deployed for various requirements
and due to varying impedance characteristics. These non liner loads caused
distortion in voltage and current wave farms, which is of increasing concern
indecent time. Harmonic occurs as spikes at interval which are multiples of the
main supply frequency and these distorted the pure sine wave from of the supply
voltage & current.
Harmonics are multiples of fundamental frequency of an electrical
power system. Example The fundamental frequency is 50 Hz, then the 5th
harmonic is 5 times that frequency or 250 Hz. Like wise 7th harmonic is seven
times of fundamental or 350 Hz and so on for higher order Harmonics.
Harmonics can be discussed in terms of Current and Voltage. A 5th Harmonic
current is simply a current flowing at 250 Hz on 50 Hz system. The 5th Harmonic
current flowing through system, Impedance creates a 5th harmonic Voltage.
Harmonic is expressed in Terms of Total Harmonic Distortion [THD]. When
harmonic current flow in system they are known as poor power quality or
Dirty power Other causes of poor power quality includes Transient such as
voltage Spike, Surges, Sags & ringing. Because they repeat in each cycle,
Harmonies are regarded as steady state cause of poor quality power.

Observation: Bank of Baroda [ Zonal office + Staff College ] Gujarat operations has sanction
Contract Demand 375 Kw and has touches to peak value in one or two month. Penalties were paid
for excessive kw. Although Avg. Max demand never touches to max peak in any month. The fixed
charges were paid on min. basis. [ 85% of 375 kw ]. This shows that the Contact Demand is enough.
Energy consumption varies significantly due to change in loading pattern of air conditioning.
Measurement done in HT side of Zonal office building, when both chiller machines are
running and one chiller machine off. System Average Power Factor is not good & need
improvement.

2. 7 Cooling Tower
Cooling Tower is Essential Equipment in most Industries remove the Heat Load
from the machine to Atmosphere at Design wt Bulb Temperature. The poor
Performance of Cooling Tower can lead to serious inefficiencies in processes leading
Equipment to Higher Power Consumption. The Cooling Towers are designed for
dissipating a Specified Heat load at specific ambient wet bulb temperature. How
ever Dry bulb and Wet bulb temperature changes daily, which affect Cooling Tower
efficiency. The change in wt bulb temp. will increase/decreses
Cooling load on
Cooling Tower. There for there is substantional Energy Saving in Cooling Tower with
attachments of drive in Fan Motors for varying airflow or stopping the Cooling
Tower fan when it is not required. A Calculation below shows the saving potentials
in Cooling Tower fan.
Performance of Cooling Tower:
Two parameters that are use full for determining the performance of cooling tower
are Temperature range and Temperature Approach.
Temperature range: It is the difference between the cooling tower inlet and out
let water temperatures.
Temperature Approach: it is the difference between the cooling tower cold-water
temperature and the ambient wet bulb temperature. Through both the parameters
are monitored, but the approach is a better indicator of cooling tower performance,
lowers the approach, and betters the performance. Closer the approach to wet bulb,
the more expensive the cooling tower due to increased in size. Usually 2.8 0C
approach to design wet bulb is the coldest temperature.

Observations : M/s Bank of Baroda has installed Two Cooling Tower for Chiller
Condensor. At the time audit it was found that two colling tower running for single
chiller. Elgi formation was found. Condensor temp was found good. In Condensor
water pumps water leakage were found, which is again wastage of water. Cooling
Tower fan motors are not running with TIC controller or VFD, where energy saving
more than 20 % cans achived. Cooling tower Temprature monitoring device not
installed.

Conclusion: As the Cooling Tower is very essential for Utilities and play vital roll
for quality performances, it is advisable to installed fluid cooler for saving
benefits. No Maintenance will reduce the down time as there is no scale formation
& increase the Efficiency of heat Exchanger. Water treatment or Algee formation
is not there. It is also advisable to installed PLC based drive in system. This will
not allow to run extra fan to start as it should be working in close loop system.

2.10 Lighting
Energy is a key factor in any industry and significant proportion of utilized in
lighting. Managing good Lighting provided better environment & provided good
services to employ. Lighting system consumes around 4% to 6% of total electrical
load in modern Industry & 305 to 40% in carprote sector. M/s Bank of Baroda has
installed different types of lighting fixtures in building. The energy management
practices for lighting system can help to reduce energy consumption, which not only
results cost saving but increases the life of lighting fixtures. Possible Energy Saving
opportunities are given with methods employed along with the payback period as
under. Installations of Energy efficient fixture consume less power.
