March 18, 2012 NBC Universal: Since the early age of 5, Ive known that I wanted to have a career in news. There was something intriguing to me, even at such a young age, about telling stories from all over the world and presenting them to an audience every night through television newscasts. As I grew older- surrounded by colleagues who dreamt of becoming neurosurgeons and lawyers, I aspired to do something equally as important and in the 7th grade, I joined my first newspaper staff- writing for the Morgan Park school newspaper in Chicago, IL. I went on to high school continuing the trend of print newspaper writing via my high schools paper, eventually working my way up to Co-editor-in-chief in my senior year where I managed the production of a bi-weekly paper and a staff of about 30 other students. It was during my time in high school that I also fell in love with the broadcasting aspect of reporting- quickly becoming the anchor of the schools daily morning announcements. Things quickly took off once I entered college, being inundated with the various opportunities that studying journalism in the nations capitol allotted me; interning with National Public Radio, ABC News Washington Bureau and CNNs Sunday morning political talk show, State of the Union to name a few. These experiences in Washington, along with other internship opportunities with ABCs O&O-WLS-TV7 in Chicago and the National Basketball Association in New York, re-confirmed for me that aspiration I established back when I was 5. Throughout my different experiences and the coursework of Howard Universitys School of Communications, I have become proficient in newsgathering utilizing different tools like Lexis Nexis and AVID iNews. I have spent time with some of the best editors and producers in the business, learning how to efficiently use ProTools, DALET, AVID Newscutter and Final Cut Studio. Ive also had the amazing opportunity to shadow network correspondents and local reporters, learning the importance of asking tough questions and the importance of being able to write flawless copy. These diverse experiences and learning opportunities are what separates me from others and has given me a toolbox of skills that could be called upon when needed in the position for which I am applying. Knowledgeable about the news, passionate about storytelling and enticed by the chance of being able to learn something new each and every day, I ask that you seriously consider my application and me as a future asset to your organization.
