Nonlinear Systems of Equations (Obj. #25) Solve nonlinear systems by Elimination Substitution Graphing

Nonlinear Systems
A nonlinear system is one in which at least one equation is not linear. You can solve a nonlinear system by Elimination transform one or both equations so that you can eliminate one of the variables by combining the equations together Substitution solve one equation for one variable and substitute it into the other equation(s) Graphing (sometimes)

Solving by Elimination
Example: Solve the system and write your solution as a set of ordered pairs.

2x 2 + 5 y 2 = 98 2x 2 y 2 = 2
Because the coefficients of x are the same, this is a good candidate for elimination. To solve, multiply the second equation by 1 and combine the two equations.

Solving by Elimination
Example: Solve the system and write your solution as a set of ordered pairs.

2x 2 + 5 y 2 = 98 2x 2 y 2 = 2

2x 2 + 5 y 2 = 98

2 x 2 + y 2 = 2

6 y 2 = 96 y 2 = 16 y = 4
Now plug in y in one of the equations and solve for x.

Solving by Elimination
Example: Solve the system and write your solution as a set of ordered pairs. 2x 2 16 = 2 2x 2 = 18 x2 = 9 x = 3 (we already know y2 = 16)

Solving by Substitution
Example: Solve by substitution and write the solution as a set of ordered pairs. x 2 + y 2 = 25 y x = 5 Solve the second equation for y and substitute into the first equation:
y = x 5 x 2 + ( x 5 ) = 25
2

Solving by Substitution
Example: Solve by substitution and write the solution as a set of ordered pairs.
x + ( x 5 ) = 25 x 2 + x 2 10 x + 25 = 25 2x 2 10 x = 0 2x ( x 5 ) = 0 x = 0,5

Plug each value of x back in and solve for y.

Solving by Substitution
Example: Solve by substitution and write the solution as a set of ordered pairs.
y = 05 = 5 y = 55 =0

Absolute Value Equations

Solve x + y = 2 2 x + 3) + y 2 = 25 (
y = x 2 y = ( x 2)
2 2

You can eliminate the absolute value by squaring both sides.

( x + 3) + ( x 2) = 25
x 2 + 6 x + 9 + x 2 + 4 x + 4 = 25 2x 2 + 10 x + 13 25 = 0 2x 2 + 10 x 12 = 0 2( x + 6 )( x 1) = 0 x = 6,1

Absolute Value Equations

Solve x + y = 2 2 x + 3) + y 2 = 25 (
y = x 2

x = 6,1
y = ( 6 ) 2 y = 1 2 = 3

Solving by Graphing
Although I have shown you the solutions of these systems as graphs, I would not recommend trying to solve by graphing unless your y term is linear. To solve a system by graphing, put each equation into y= form, put into your calculator, and find the intercepts.

Solving by Graphing
Example: Solve the system by graphing. x2 y = 0 x+ y =2 y = x2 y = x + 2

{( 2,4 ) , (1,1)}

Use /-G to access entry line

Solving by Graphing
Example: Solve. y = x2 + 4x 2x y = 8 y = x2 + 4x y = 2x + 8
