BEAR LAKE After completing the
20-hour basic training course March 24
and 25, the Bear Lake Township Fire
Departments Community Emergency
Response Team (CERT) is ready to be
called upon whenever the need arises.
Were trained to assist the profession-
al first responders with things like perim-
eter security and traffic control in times of
emergency, said Larry Gibson, who is the
local CERT coordinator.
A group of 18 local citizens who will
be part of the CERT trained at Bear Lake
School along with seven Wexford County
CERT members. They learned what CERT
is and how it functions, first aid, fire safe-
ty, how to assist with search and rescue
operations and
terrorism situations and disaster pre-
paredness and disaster psychology.
Its important that CERT members
know how to work with disaster victims
and also how to psychologically handle
what they will be dealing with and seeing,
said Gibson, who moved to Bear Lake
several years ago after retiring from the
Madison Heights Police Department.

Township supervisor, said that even when
the CERT members do simple tasks to
help emergency responders they will be
providing essential additional manpower.
The CERT program is definitely a good
thing for Bear Lake and for the area, Best
said. With 10-year storms happening
more often than that, CERT will be a valu-
able asset. The more we discussed CERT,
the more we thought weve got to do it.
Sgt. Bruce Payne, Michigan State Police
CERT and Citizen Corps coordinator, was
in Bear Lake to assist with the training.
One thing we have learned during a
disaster or an emergency, no matter what
the hazard is, that we have to rely upon the
community, Payne said. Thats why this
CERT training is so important. One thing
we learned from Sept. 11 or Hurricane
Katrina is that the system is going to be
so taxed that it will not have the ability to
respond to each 9-1-1 call.
Thats why this training is so impor-
tant, Payne continued, because we give
the citizens basic training on how to get
themselves prepared, how to keep them-
selves safe, how to take care of their com-
munities, and thats what the CERT pro-
gram is all about, keeping people safe and
keeping their communities safe.
Gibson pointed out that the CERT
team is available for situations throughout
the area as a deployable asset of the Bear
Lake Township Fire Department. Five
individuals were previously trained for the
program, and they helped during the early
March snowstorm that brought down trees
and power lines.
According to Gibson, CERT is a part of
the Citizens Corps, which is a nationwide
Federal Emergency Management Agency
program whose motto is Uniting commu-
nities; preparing the nation.
We would have been happy with eight
to 10 students, but its really nice to be full
at 25, Gibson said. Its good to train with
Wexford, because there could be things
coming up that we work on together.
Gibson noted that there will be a train-
ing session in several months when Bear
Lakes seasonal residents have returned to
their summer homes.
The community has been great,
Gibson said. Weve received a lot of sup-
port for the program. People have said they
would like to help the fire department, and
this is a great way to do that.

Just after noon on March 24 half of the CERT trainees were at the front door of
Bear Lake School getting a lesson on fire safety.
Part of CERT training involves learning
how to help disaster victims.

To compete in the world
economy, U.S. businesses
will need millions of new
college graduates for the
next decades new jobs.
Can todays colleges and
universities develop future
workers with the skills they
will need for tomorrows
jobs?
A new book by Dr.
Tracey Wilen-Daugenti,
Society 3.0: How
Technology Is Reshaping
Education, Work and
Society, details how col-
leges and universities are
still evolving ways to pro-
vide the workforce skills
that companies will most
need to innovate and grow
in the 21st century.
Traditional class-
room learning no longer
matches the way todays
students learn and com-
plete coursework, says Dr.
Wilen-Daugenti, a former
Silicon Valley executive
who is the vice president
and managing director of
Apollo Research Institute.
Major societal trends, such
as degree acquisition later
in life, social mobility and
greater need for intercul-
tural awareness, will dic-
tate the content and deliv-
ery of higher education.
Yet many colleges and
universities struggle to
keep pace with these trends
and enrollment rates over
the past decade have been
stagnant. As one solution,
Dr. Wilen-Daugenti pro-
poses greater use of dis-
tance learning programs,
where online coursework
and class participation sup-
plement or replace face-
to-face learning. Distance
learning helps brick-and-
mortar universities add
learning capacity while
allowing working students
to take courses on their
own schedule, she says.
Producing millions of
new graduates will require
multiple stakeholders for
success. Individuals must
become lifelong learners to
keep their skill sets current
with marketplace demands
across longer careers,
says Dr. Wilen-Daugenti.
Educational institutions
need to keep pace with
technological and social
developments in the skills
they promote, the way they
deliver instruction and
the range of students they
serve.
According to Dr. Wilen-
Daugenti, businesses must
adapt their workforce
planning and development
strategies and collaborate
with higher education
institutions to ensure that
future skill requirements
are aligned with relevant
curricula and instructional
delivery systems. Likewise,
she says, the federal gov-
ernment must make educa-
tion a national priority, to
provide citizens with the
skills most suited to build-
ing a sustainable future.
The future of higher
education is tied to inno-
vation, technology and
an adaptive knowledge of
societys emerging trends,
says Dr. Wilen-Daugenti
of the teamwork needed
to produce tomorrows
resilient, skilled workforce.
The importance of educa-
tion to career longevity
and success has never been
greater.

When looking for a job,
you need to do more than
brush off your rsum and
buy an interview suit. Good
listening skills are crucial
for any employee. Seventy-
three percent of employers
surveyed by ACT, a leading
college and workforce plan-
ning organization, ranked
listening among extremely
important job skills. If you
suffer from any hearing
loss, the most important
investment you may want
to make is improving your
communication skills.
People with hear-
ing loss find it difficult to
get and keep a job, said
Chicago-based ear, nose
and throat doctor Sreekant
Cherukuri.
Whether because of
ignorance, uncertainty,
fear or malice, employers
are often unwilling to
hire people with hearing
issues. Even failing to hear
the occasional word on
a job interview can lead
the interviewer to think
a potential hire is not up
to the job. Many times,
employers dont even real-
ize that potential hires have
hearing loss. Rather, even
slight hearing impairment
can result in a candidate
appearing uncommunica-
tive, unfriendly or even
unintelligent.
While it is illegal to
discriminate against people
with hearing issues, the
reality is that such discrim-
ination happens.
Its also true that those
who are employed may find
it difficult to get promoted
because of their impair-
ment. The Better Hearing
Institute confirmed the
negative impact of hearing
loss on job performance.

ing loss lose as much as

ing on their degree of

hearing loss.
Few jobs provide accom-
modations to compensate
for hearing loss, and in
a difficult job market,
employers see people who
are ready to do the job as a
better bet.
While its estimated that
36 million people in the
U.S. need hearing aids, over
77 percent (28 million) are
walking around without
them. The Deaf and Hard
of Hearing Association esti-
mates that only one in five
people who needs a hearing
aid wears one.
One reason many people
dont get the help they
need is the cost of hearing
aids. Thats why Cherukuri
decided to develop an
affordable hearing aid (The
MDHearingAid).
Many consumer elec-
tronics items, such as
smartphones, digital cam-
eras and DVD players, cost
less than $200, but the cost
of a hearing aid (a much
simpler device) can be
prohibitive. Medicare and
most insurance plans do
not cover hearing aids and
the average out-of-pocket
cost is between $1,500 and
$3,000 per ear. For one of
the most prevalent chronic
health conditions reported
by older adults, hearing
aids are an unaffordable
luxury for many.
The components of
a hearing aid are not any
more expensive than an
iPhone and a hearing aid
cant do what an iPhone
does, but a hearing aid
costs so much more, said
Cherukuri.
He was sure he could
build a medical-grade hear-
ing aid that was reasonably
priced and effective for
the most common types
of hearing loss and he
was right, as his customers,
such as nurses, teachers
and truckers, have told him
how important this invest-
ment has been for their
careers.
The MDHearingAid he
invented costs less than
$200 per ear and provides
a viable option to patients
who cannot afford the high
price of custom hearing
aids. Thats a price range
that many more people
can afford to invest in their
employment future.

NORTH AMERICAN PRECIS
SYNDICATE
Its time to check around the
house to make sure things are oper-
ating efficiently. Here are 10 often-
overlooked tasks to add to your
home-cleaning list:
1. Check AC: Have your air-
conditioning system tuned up to
lower energy bills and ensure the sys-
tem is running at its manufacturer-
rated efficiency.
2. Check Water Heater: If your
water heater is more than five years
old, check it for signs of leakage or
rusting at the bottom.
3. Fertilize Lawn: Apply a high-
nitrogen fertilizer once in the spring
and again in the fall.
4. Check Refrigerator: Clean
the refrigerators condenser coil with
a long-handled bottle brush and a
vacuum cleaner with an attachment
hose to remove dust and lint that
could shut down the unit by causing
it to overheat.
5. Clean Gutters: Clean the
gutters so the rainwater flows easily
off the roof. Clearing leaves prevents
water from pooling in areas and
attracting mosquitoes.
6. Organize Closets: Wash or
dry-clean clothes before storing them
in a zippered sweater or blanket bag
or in a plastic bin.
7. Clean Carpets: Vacuum
carpets and shampoo with a spray
foam or powder, or rent a steamer
from the hardware store for a deeper
clean.
8. Wash Exterior Windows:
Pick a cloudy day to wash exterior
windows. Too much sun dries the
cleaning solution too quickly and cre-
ates streaks.
9. File Important Documents:
Store warranties, operating manuals
and other documents in hanging files,
folders or binders for easy access.
10. Check Batteries: The average
home is filled with battery-oper-
ated devices from flashlights to
smoke detectors to cordless phones.
Dont forget to test those devices and
replace the batteries with fresh ones.
Test smoke alarms once per
month and change the batteries at
least twice per year. Ensure there is
at least one working smoke alarm on
every level of your home, particularly
in or near sleeping areas.
According to the U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Commission, about
3,000 people in the U.S. lose their
lives in residential fires every year.
Its time to replace the batteries if the
detector emits a warning sound, such
as chirping or beeping.
Interstate Batteries makes 16,000
different kinds of batteries pow-
ering automobiles, laptops and
everything in between. Interstate
All Battery Centers will have, find or
build the right battery for just about
any gadget around your home.

NORTH AMERICAN
PRECIS SYNDICATE
Nearly everyone has
a reusable grocery tote,
but only 15 percent of
Americans regularly clean
their eco-friendly bags
and that could create a
breeding zone for harmful
bacteria.
According to the Home
Food Safety program, a
collaboration between
the Academy of Nutrition
and Dietetics (formerly
the American Dietetic
Association) and ConAgra
Foods, its a smart idea to
clean totes on a regular
basis.
Using unwashed gro-
cery totes can cause cross-
contamination when juices
from raw meats or germs
from unclean objects come
in contact with cooked
or ready-to-eat foods like
breads or produce, says
registered dietitian and
Academy spokesperson
Ruth Frechman.
Food poisoning affects
48 million Americans a
year, but it can be prevented
with practical steps, such as
cleaning grocery totes and
separating raw meats from
ready-to-eat foods when
shopping, cooking, serv-
ing and storing foods, she
added.
Frechman says to make
sure all bacteria are elimi-
nated by frequently washing
your grocery tote, either
in the washing machine or
by hand with hot, soapy
water; cleaning all areas
where you place your totes,
such as the kitchen counter;
storing totes in a clean, dry
location; and avoiding leav-
ing totes in the trunk of a
vehicle.
In the store, wrap meat,
poultry and fish in plastic
bags before placing in the
tote and use two different
totes for raw meats and
ready-to-eat foods, says
Frechman.
She also stresses it is a
smart idea to use two cut-
ting boards at home: one
strictly to cut raw meat,
poultry and seafood; the
other for ready-to-eat foods,
like breads and vegetables.
Keep cutting boards
separate, and wash them
thoroughly in hot, soapy
water after each use or
place in the dishwasher,
she says. Discard any old
cutting boards that have
cracks, crevices and exces-
sive knife scars.
Cross-contamination also
happens in your refrigerator
when you place raw meats
on the top shelf and juices
drip onto produce, says
Frechman. An easy solution
is placing raw meats, poultry
and seafood on the bottom
shelf and keeping washed
produce in clean storage
containers instead of original
packaging.
Wash your grocery totes to minimize health risks
