Final Project Prompt & Rubric

Over the course of our unit on Justice weve seen the various ways in which the world that our characters live in revolves around the idea of either finding justice through vengeance, or being cleared of guilt. You assignment can be one of the projects listed below that will require you to push yourselves to look deeply into both The Count of Monte Cristo and Monster and to take these two books separated by nearly 200 years and connect them to each other on very fundamental levels. Possible Projects: 1) A 5-6 page essay that examines the way in which justice works and how the characters in both books, Edmond and Steve, evolve as they both wait for justice to be served, either through their actions, or actions of others. Must have textual support as parenthetical citations. Possible prompts below. - In Alexandre Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo the protagonist Edmond is transformed from a happy youth into a vengeful adult bent on seeking revenge. How does this transformation compare to that of Steve Harmon in Monster by Walter Dean Myers? - Steve Harmon is called a Monster by the prosecution, but compared to Edmond Dantes, who has committed more wrong? Which of these characters do you believe is more deserving of the title of a Monster and why? - Its important to understand the circumstances leading up to what causes the protagonist to search for justice. In the CoMC Edmond seeks vengeance against Danglars, Mondego, Villefort, and Caderousse; while James King is tried for the murder of Mr. Nesbitt. Of these characters explain as best you can who is more deserving of the

punishment they receive, and if you feel they deserve more than the come-uppance they get? 2) A soundtrack comprised of 10 songs, 5 for The Count of Monte Cristo and 5 for Monster, although overlap between books and songs is encouraged. For each song chosen there must be a page rationale for why the song was chosen as well as the lyrics of all the songs. Must also have a cover design, name of songs, and artists, but no physical album is required. 3) Group Project: A skit/video that involves placing either of the main characters from the books on trial for what they have done / not done. Such as trying Edmond for the revenge he took, or placing Steve in the times of CoMC and how his life could be like. Must hand in script and creativity is a must! Needs to use events from book to found performance i.e. must use characters, and situations. Must hand in two page reflection/rationale (max 3 people per group). Now with any of these projects there is room for interpretation and enhancement. Bring me any questions or ideas you have about possible assignments. Be persuasive, have a stance, make judgments and support them with evidence from the text. With 1 & 2 you must display a clear sense of searching deeper than the surface. 3 must be at least 10 minutes in length. This project is worth a total 150 points, which is half of the points available on the unit!

All assignments are due April 13th at the start of class! Late projects will not be accepted, if you cannot make it to class, project must be emailed before class starts or sent with someone else.
