While it is not unusual for people to get a cold or the flu, children get them more often than adults.1

Both a cold and the flu are common infections with germs that may cause a runny or stuffy nose, cough, sore throat, sometimes fever, and even mild diarrhea in young children.2 3 Its difficult to avoid ever getting a cold or the flu, but there are some simple things you can do that will help keep you well. Colds do not come from getting cold or wet, even though many people think that. Getting very cold, wet or tired can make a cold worse, and can make your body weaker, so that it cannot fight against the germs, but it doesnt cause a cold. A cold is caught from others who have the infection and sneeze the infection into the air.4 5 Another way cold germs are passed on is by shaking hands with someone who has a cold, or by touching things that have been dirtied with secretions from a sick persons nose or mouth. These germs go into the body and can cause sickness; especially when ones body is not strong inside. Here are several things that can help protect you from getting sick.6

First, avoid spending much time around people that have a cold or the flu. Take special care to keep small babies away from them. Sick persons should eat and sleep separately for a few days, so as not to give their colds to others.7

Second, keep your hands away from your eyes, nose or mouth.the places where germs come into the body.8

Third, wash your hands well for ten seconds several times a day, and always before meals. This is a simple way to help keep from getting a cold or the flu and prevent you from spreading the germs to others.

Colds and the flu almost always go away without medicine. Do not use any antibiotics, they will not help and may even cause harm.9

Here are some things you can do to safely treat a cold or the flu. Act quickly as soon as you start getting sick.

Number 1. Drink plenty of water. Enough to make the urine quite pale, usually 8-12 glasses daily. Extra water is needed because of more sweating and a runny nose.

Number 2. Eat wisely. Its good to eat during a cold or the flu because the body still needs strength. Eat more fruit to get the many vitamins and minerals they contain. But dont eat any sugary foods, and be careful not to eat too much. A breastfed child with a cough or cold may be difficult to feed. But feeding helps fight the infection and protects the childs growth.

Often, clearing the blocked nose will help the child to feed.10 Carefully suck the mucus out of the nose with a suction bulb or syringe without a needle.11

Number 3. Get extra sleep. Go to bed early or take a short sleep later in the morning. When you are overtired, the body cannot fight germs or fix the damage. Often some extra sleep is exactly what your body needs.

Number 4. Exercise in the fresh air and sunshine. Sunshine kills germs, and exercise makes more friendly white blood cells to help fight germs.12

Number 5. Use water treatments. Water treatments can help a person feel better and recover much quicker.

If someone has a scratchy-sore throat, a cold or flu, put their feet in hot water for 20 minutes and put a cold cloth to the head.

Finish by pouring cold water over the feet and drying them well.

A Heating Compress is an excellent treatment to help heal a sore throat or cough.

At bedtime take a piece of thin cloth, like a handkerchief, and wet it in cold water. Squeeze out any extra water so it wont drip. Then wrap the cloth around the neck loosely.

22

Next take a woolen sock or piece of cloth (wool works well) and wrap it around the neck on top of the first cloth, pinning it in place. Wear the compress all night. The wet cloth underneath will heat up and bring extra blood and healing to the area.

A stuffy or runny nose can result from a cold. Put a little salt water into the hand and sniff it into the nose. This helps to loosen the mucus.

Another way to help clear the sinuses is a sinus bowl treatment. Take a bowl of hot water and place your face and nose in the water with your mouth over the edge of the bowl for breathing.

Keep your face in the hot water for three minutes, adding hot water part way through to keep it hot.

Next, place your nose in a bowl of cold water for 1 minute. Repeat the set of hot and cold three times, ending with cold.

To prevent an earache or sinus infection, try not to blow your nose instead just wipe it. Teach children to do the same.13

If a cold or the flu lasts more than a week, or if the person has fever, coughs up a lot of phlegm (mucus with pus), has shallow fast breathing or chest pain, he could be getting infection in the lungs (bronchitis or pneumonia). See your health worker before it becomes worse.

If a child with a cough is breathing much faster than normal (over 50 times a minute), get the child to a clinic quickly. With proper treatment, millions of child deaths from lung infection could be avoided.14

Today weve learned some of the many things one can do to prevent and treat a cold or the flu. Although a cold or flu can make one feel rather miserable, the use of simple remedies and a healthy way of living can relieve much suffering. Whether you are feeling great, or are down with a cold, never forget that God cares about you, and wants you to be well. In the Bible God says, Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. 3 John 2 (NKJV)
