the Hassayampa Switchyard and the Palo Verde Switchyard. The site contains a control building to house protective relay systems, station batteries, communications equipment, and other required auxiliary electrical control equipment and a maintenance building. Due to the large The Hassayampa Switchyard is a new 500-kV switching station constructed specifically to facilitate the interconnection requests of new Independent Power Project (IPP) generating facilities in the vicinity of the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, located approximately 60 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona. The overall project includes the new 500-kV satellite switchyard approximately 3 miles south of the existing Palo Verde Switchyard; modification of two existing 500-kV transmission lines to loop in and out of the satellite switchyard; a new 500-kV transmission line from the Palo Verde switchyard to the satellite yard; and the addition of a 500-kV line termi-nation at the existing Palo Verde Switchyard for the new tie line. The Hassayampa Switchyard is on a 26-acre site with a fenced area that is approximately 1,500 ft by 1,700 ft. The yard was constructed with eight bays of 500-kV live-tank circuit breakers arranged in a breaker and a half configuration, with ultimate provisions for ten bays. This configuration provides space for the six current IPP terminations and for the termination of future transmission lines and/or generating station tie lines. Three bay positions are used for ties between number of generating station and transmission line interconnections, the rated current capacity and fault current requirements of the Hassayampa Switchyard are high. The circuit breakers are rated at 63-kA fault interrupting duty. Also due to the high load current requirements, four-conductor bundle 2500 kcmil strain bus was selected for the main bus and two-conductor bundle 2500 kcmil strain bus was used for the bay conductors. Total weight of structural steel for the switchyard is 2.5 million pounds. The IPP developers, or interconnectors, funded the project, which was managed by SRP on behalf of the Arizona Nuclear Power Project High Voltage Switchyard (Palo Verde Switchyard) Participants. The IPP stations and developers are: Harquahala (PG&E Generating) Arlington Valley (Duke Energy) Redhawk (Pinnacle West Energy Corporation) Gila Bend (Gila Bend Power Partners, LLC) Mesquite (Sempra Energy) The dates for back-feed energization required by each IPP dictated the project schedule and led to a staged approach for equipment deliveries and construction of the switchyard bays. The constraints on outages in the existing Palo Verde Switchyard and on the 500-kV lines terminating at the nuclear plant were also critical in developing the construction schedule.
