1 BrettA.Amendola,37,ofAshburnpleadguiltyApril4fordefraudingmorethan$3.8million frominvestorsthroughaPonzischemeinvolvinghispurportedpurchaseofagolfcoursein LoudounCounty. TheLoudounCountySheriffsOfficepartneredwiththeFBIintheinvestigationofan Ashburnmansdefraudingscheme. Amendola,whowasprosecutedbyAssistantU.S.AttorneyJamesP.Gillis,pleadguiltyto wirefraudandfacesamaximumpenaltyof20yearsinprisonduringhissentencingJune29. Accordingtoauthorities,Amendolapersuadedvariousinvestorstoprovidehimwithshort termfundingthatwouldbeheldinescrowtofulfillarequirementbyhislendertopurchase theBeaconHillGolfCourseoutsideofLeesburg.Accordingtodocuments,Amendola promisedthatthemoneywouldbereturnedtotheinvestorswithinterestwithindays. Amendoladivertedtheinvestorsmoneytohisownusewhichincludedfundinghisand familymemberstradingaccounts,makingpaymentstoinvestorsinthisandotherschemes andpayingforpersonalexpenses,areleasesaid. Amendolaalsoposedastheattorneyrepresentingtheescrowaccountoverthephoneandin emailmessages,thereleasesaid.Thisleadinvestigatorstobelievethatthefundswouldbe wiredtofinancialaccountscontrolledbytheescrowattorney,whichinturnwasAmendola.
