Mohamed Gamel, Statement of study objectives Business administration. Innovation; A simple ten letter word that has always been a driving factor in this small town young man's life. Achieving perfect scores in elementary school was hardly enough for me, and, as a result, I often found myself participating in many extracurricular activities; from leading the school's debate team, the school's radio, and writing in the school's journal (the latter leading to) my name and picture appearing in an article in an international magazine at the (age of nine), everything contributed in making my primary school years fun, memorable and immensely fulfilling. It also contributed to me being awarded the student of the year award for the academic year 1999-2000 and a weeklong, all expenses paid trip to Cairo. But my inner thirst for achievement has yet to be quenched; I was the sort of child who would take his old toys apart and put them back together just to see how they work, I was also the sort of child that, would every now and then, create (or sometimes try to) some intricate contraption just to challenge myself. At age eleven, I created a motion censor alarm project for my school using a magnet, a light bulb, and an old bicycle alarm just to impress my science teacher. Growing up in the information age and watching technology grow around me, it was hard to stay away from computers. I got my first computer in 2001. I was fascinated with my new computer completely, and for the next two years I was committed to learning as much as I possibly could about it; I even took a twenty one day course in computer maintenance and repair to start things off. This course qualified me in 2003 and at the age of thirteen to get a job at an internet caf. Being only thirteen years of age, I had very little use for the money, but the idea of interacting with customers, having access to the internet, and the potential to learn more and more about computers through experience was enough for me. As I delved deeper and deeper into the IT world, my grades started to slowly drop, and I realized that I was spending too much time working and very little time studying but by the time I came to that conclusion that drop had already made a profound impact on my future; it forced me to get into business school, instead of engineering school as I had originally intended. Being an only child to a divorced mother who never remarried, and living in a middle class home; tuition was somewhat of an issue for me, I didn't want my mother to bare the burden of paying for my school, as she had enough on her plate with the house (at the time, bank loans had to be paid every month). As such, I decided to view the issue of tuition as a challenge that I could face head on by working even harder and paying my way through college; this continued to take it's toll on my grades all through the first two years of college. Up until that point I had believed that the only career I could ever possibly have had to be solely computer based, and had I been told back then that I would someday be pursuing a graduate degree in business administration, I would've certainly laughed at the mere idea. But, in time, my perspective came to change, thanks to my business professor at the Higher Institution of Commercial Sciences and Computers, Dr. Alsayed Abdulmenem, who helped me view business school in a whole new light, and whom I have considered a mentor and a role model to me to this day.Meeting Dr. Abdulmenem made me open my eyes to the possibility that I wasn't limited to only working with computers in my professional career, and that grasping

business and management concepts came easy to me because my circumstances have prepared me for being a natural leader, mainly because my status as "the man of the house.", which I grew to find my self embracing as a result of living with my mother after she and my father got divorced when I was one year old. That realization gave me the extra motivation I needed to push myself harder in both my work and studies resulting in a significant improvement in my grades during my last two years of college, leading a team of five students into winning third place in a regional cultural competition against all other schools in the governant, and leading a team of fifteen students in creating a full electronic human recourses management system for my school's HR department as a graduation project for which I received a grade of "Very Good" and my bachelor's in business information systems. As a graduate desiring to pursue my MBA studies abroad, my goal is to acquire a broader perspective on business as it's taught in a well developed, culturally diverse beacon of capitalism that is the U.S, in order to gain the knowledge I need to merge my academic studies with my technical passion and work experience and hopefully be able to benefit the Egyptian markets in it's post-revolution state of growth by using my MBA to acquire a teaching position where I can teach business to Egyptian students which will give me the experience I need as well as the means to start my own company which will specialize in providing computerized business training solution to Egyptian businesses and business owners. I also aim to act as a cultural ambassador of sorts, learning about the American culture and way of life while well representing the Egyptian people and raising awareness about Egyptian culture and traditions abroad. In closing, I would like to add that I believe that a person's potential for excellence is paralleled only by his ambition and determination, which is why I believe that I have the potential to influence my field while benefiting myself, my family, my country, and in turn the world. And as a world wide destination for all scholars and students who are adamant on making the most impact they can for the betterment of mankind for many years, I believe that the Fulbright Egyptian student program is the ideal beacon from which such effort would best be launched.

Mohamed Gamel, Personal statement Business administration. If one were to ask my friends to describe me they would describe me as a very pleasant, diverse, active and intelligent man. I think one of my most distinguishing characteristics is the diversity of experiences I possess. I am a business graduate with a flair for technology. I am a man with technical aptitude and an interest in management. I also have a passion for traveling and understanding different cultures of the world. All these elements have given me a very broad outlook, with varying degrees of knowledge in a range of topics. I strongly believe that although some are not related directly, all these qualities will influence my graduate work. My Business degree has given a strong foundation to my analytical skills since accounting involves a lot of long, complex and intricate calculations and the application of basic math skills. Over the past few years, I have been working in many different fields, mostly relating to technology, sales and management. I have also done a lot of translation work. I have done a lot of freelance work as a technology and language consultant for several local business men and individuals. More than what I have studied in school and college, it has been these experiences that have shaped the person that I am today. I believe that this unique blend of experiences has made me a man with an original point of view. This blend has given me a broader perspective to and a good understanding of life and a goal to aim for. Among other things, I have this diversity of experience to offer the Fulbright program. My most substantial accomplishment has been the success of the graduation project that I managed at the Higher Institute of Commercial Sciences and Computers, where I had been studying business administration from 2006 to 2010. My task during the aforementioned research project was to create a new software that handled the managing and archiving of the school's employee data for the human resources department, during the research period I had an opportunity to observe and work with the existing system being used. Some of the software packages being used were outdated versions. I have always been in touch with the latest software packages thanks to the -powerful PC I have at home- and am quite used to working with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) environment. There was a great deal of chaos while preparing reports that involved use of more than one software since compatibility between packages usually posed a problem, so did the fact that not one single software combined all the managing and archiving features that the HR department needed so they had to use several very expensive software suites, which needless to say was considered wasted resources. The difficulty of putting different files together led to the final report appearing rather haphazard sometimes. I believe in providing and maintaining non-negotiable high standards and service. I recognized that specifically designing, and shifting to a newer GUI

based software would not only dramatically improve the documentation quality, but also increase productivity at the workplace, while eliminating the need to waste valuable resources on the purchase of several different software packages. Presenting the pros and cons to my research supervisor was a very challenging task. I was asked to prepare a proposal regarding the design of the GUI and the programming that would be implemented. Initially, I imagined this project would be rather simple but it turned out to be among the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. Through a school survey of operators and several one-on-one discussions of their own preferences and solutions, I found that while everybody wanted the upgradation, they had doubts since they would have to learn a whole set of new skills. In order to tackle the none existent budget, everything had to be done by my team. I realized the necessity of training the operators because the new GUI interface was specially designed and didn't share many similarities to the existing applications. I examined the possibility of conducting in-house training seminars for the employees. After a detailed analysis, I presented my report to my research supervisor in the next meeting. He was pleased with my efforts and pleasantly surprised at the efficiency of the proposed software since it seemed to combine all the important elements that were needed to create detailed reports out of whichever aspects were desired from the employee information database, which previously had to incorporate the use of many very expensive applications. Once I was given the go-ahead, the next hurdle was to implement the design and coordinate the upgrading. To avoid any disturbance to the school's work, training sessions were planned after working hours. The design and programming took two weeks and the training of the operators took another week. The really tough period started once the training personnel left. The evaluation committee felt that it was my responsibility to see that the operators didn't face any problems once they actually started using the new software. I put in 60 to 70-hour weeks for the next three weeks before everyone was comfortable with the new system. After a review process, the evaluation committee decided that the project should be considered a success and that I should along with my team receive a grade of (very good) for our efforts. I consider this to be a tacit compliment for my efforts. This project required me to believe in myself and in what I thought was good for the school. I had to take a pro-active approach, take the initiative and play a leadership role in motivating people and executing the project to completion A good manager is one who can figure out where the problem lies, deal with it effectively by involving all the members of his team and improve the overall culture of the school/company. The problem I saw at The Higher Institute of Commercial Sciences and Computers had to be resolved to sustain the school's image. The fact that I was able to pull off this task alone has boosted my confidence in my abilities.
