Food for Fines has returned to the
Strathmore Municipal Library. For ev-
ery non-perishable item brought into
the library for the food bank $2 will
be waived for overdue fnes.
Last October we ran Food for
Fines and we received about 392
items. We only ran it for three weeks
and it was in celebration of Canadian
Library Month, said Carmen Lefeb-
vre, Assistant Director of Library Ser-
vices.
So at that time, right before Christ-
mas, the Food Bank saidits great,
were always in need but everybody
seems to do their food drives at the
same time. So we asked them when
would be the best time for them (for
us) to do it and they said usually
March or April.
The bins were set up just inside the
library on April 1, and will remain
there until the 30. Instead of distrib-
uting all of the items collected at the
end of the month, the food bank will
be picking up the donations through-
out the month.
The goal is to collect a total of 500
items, and there is a paper thermom-
eter that is keeping track of how
many items have been collected.
The great thing about this pro-
gram is it gives people a chance to
be able to pay off their fnes, and
yet help someone else out as well,
help someone who needs the food as
well, said Lefebvre.
Usually after Christmas you have a
lot of things kicking around in your
cupboards. After all the Christmas
season you think Im going to have
that can of tomatos or that can of
pumpkin pie mix, and youre think-
ing what am I supposed to do with
this. Well bring it in, bring it to some-
body who needs it and this way get
your fnes waived as well.
Anyone interested in donating that
may not have fnes to waive are, of
course, encouraged to do so until
April 30.

I dont want glass
coverage.
Every insurance policy is
written with glass coverage.
The trouble is, its expensive,
has a high deductible, and quite
often does not have the best
coverage. What does this mean
to you?
When most policies are
written, they are written with
the SEF 13D. This is a standard
endorsement form 13D
limited glass coverage. This
endorsement then limits the
glass coverage on your vehicle
to named perils only, and would
likely be rolled into the cost
of the whole car repair. For
example; fre, theft, vandalism,
hail, impact with an animal are
all insured under comprehensive
cover and all would likely affect
more than just your windshield!

coverage, the best thing to do

is to deal with a company that specializes in glass
coverage. There is a much smaller deductible, and
the premium itself will generally be much easier
to swallow. This would include coverage for rock
chips and cracks. And if you make a claim, it wont
affect your auto policy. The only requirement for
coverage like this is that your windshield, side glass
and sunroof all have to be free of damage before
the policy can be written.

The second annual Pet Expo is be-
ing held at the Civic Centre next week-
end, and pet owners are encouraged to
bring their pets down and check things
out.
As long as they have some sort of
proof of current vaccination they can
defnitely bring their pets on in, said
Melissa David of Quality Dog Groom-
ing, one of the organizers.
Last year David and Melissa Crispin-
Piche of Tail Waggers Dog Walking Ser-
vice paired up to bring Strathmores
frst Pet Expo. It was an immediate suc-
cess with over 760 people attending.
There will be a few changes this year
due to feedback from last year.
What we did at the end of the expo
is we had feedback sheets for everyone
who attended and all our exhibitors as
to what they would like to see different
this year. Our two biggest comments
were more agriculture stuff for the farm
kids and the farming community, and
more space, said David.
She said they were a little bit cramped
in from trying to do just a little too
much last year. So this year they have
taken out a few of the things from last
year, just to allow for more space, and
then added some agriculture to it.
One thing that people are excited
for this year is the Strathmore Vet Clinic
now has a lady that does rehabilitation
for injured animals, and its kind of the
frst of its kind in Strathmore. Theyre
going to be showcasing some of their
stuff, said David.
As with last year non-perishable food
donations are being accepted to donate
to the food bank. Donations are also
going to be collected to donate to Bea-
gle Paws, which is a non-proft char-
ity that rescues beagles and promotes
them as family pets, while helping to
prevent abuse and neglect.
Were going to try to make a paws-
way, so its kind of our version of a
hallway. Admission is free but we will
be selling paws for $2 eachyou write
your name on it, and then were going
to try and fll the whole entire hallway
of the Civic Centre, said David.
The doors open for the Pet Expo on
April 21 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., and
April 27 is already booked for next
years expo.

As the Spring season is rapidly approaching, the Town will be
initiating many of our seasonal programs.
Be on the Alert for Town crews and Contractor crews that may
be involved in the following projects.

STREET CLEANING
Residential Spring clean-up will be starting mid- April. We cur-
rently have 150 lane kilometres to sweep. You can assist in doing
a Clean Sweep, by removing your vehicles off the street. Sweep-
ing gravel off your driveway and front sidewalk prior to the sweep-
ers arrival would greatly help in achieving this.
Watch for the large notifcation signboards that are placed in
advance at main residential entrances into your community.

POTHOLE PATCHING
Over the winter potholes form and create driving hazards. Our
crews have already begun repairing and maintaining those areas.

PARKS /TURF MANAGEMENT
Our Parks Department from mid- April- September, will be busy
repairing playground equipment, trash collection, mowing, aerat-
ing, planting fowers, watering, applying herbicides and fertilizers
throughout the 256 acres of Town owned green spaces.
Note: During herbicide treatments, warning signs will be placed
at community entrances prior to applications. Yellow signs will be
placed immediately after herbicide application.

SIDEWALK/STREETS /BACK LANES / PATHWAYS
Repairs will be made to sidewalks, curbs, streets and back lanes.
1200 meters of new pathway along Thomas Drive will be added in
2012 to our existing 10.5 kilometer network.

LINE PAINTING
Painting will begin ( weather permitting) after the Spring clean-
up is completed. We currently have 45,000 linear meters as well as
numerous arrows and handicap symbols to complete.

SAFETY TIPS :
- Adjust your speed and obey all construction signs,
warning signals and Flaggers
- Keep a safe distance from construction equipment and
work sites
- Warmer weather means playgrounds will be busy with all the
children, please observe the 30km/h speeds in those areas
We will no longer be holding the
open House to discuss city status.

This past Saturday members of
the Strathmore Legion and the
Ladies Auxiliary Branch #10 held
an evening of remembrance and
celebration for the 95th anniver-
sary of the battle of Vimy Ridge.
It was on Easter Sunday on the
9th of April 1917 when 100,000
Canadian soldiers making up of
four divisions took control of the
German-held line under consid-
erable resistance.
With overwhelming success,
and hailed as one the greatest
victories of World War 1, the
battle of Vimy Ridge in France
was applauded by world leaders.
Canadian Soldiers from all over
Canada forged a name for our
nation. A success attributed to
tactical, technical and thorough
planning by the Canadian Mili-
tary. Today 250-acres of the for-
mer battlegrounds is now the Ca-
nadian National Vimy Memorial.
Members of the legion and
their guests had dinner served
by members of the graduating
class of 2012. As part of the eve-
nings events a single table set-
ting was placed with a Canadi-
an fag draped across the chair.
A symbol of Canadian Soldiers
who were lost at Vimy and those
currently in Afghanistan, they
will always be remembered and
will always have a place set for
them with respect and gratitude.
Among the nights events were
speeches on the battle of Vimy
Ridge. Legion members who had
also participated in other battles
spoke of their experiences of
serving our country.
As said wisely by guest speaker
Pastor Dawn Nelson It is impor-
tant to be proud and honored of
the men and women of our na-
tion who have shown great cour-
age. It is equally important to tell
and share these historic events
with our children so these stories
never fade or lose meaning.

New Spray Park proposed by Lions Club
Jason Glabik
Time Contributor
The Ag grounds north of Strathmore
High School track could someday be
home to a second water Spray Park for
Strathmore if Town council supports
the project.
The Strathmore Lions Club would
fund the cost of construction while the
Town would cover the operating costs.
The club built the frst spray park at
Kinsmen Park.
The spray park proposed by the Li-
ons would utilize two 1,500-gallon
tanks and recycle the water while in
operation.
The current park uses $40,000 worth
of water a year, based on the commer-
cial rate charged by the Town for wa-
ter, and none is recycled.
Strathmore Lions Club president
Wayne Sharp and frst vice president
Don Geiger visited Town council on
March 21 to ask why the Town is not
supportive of the project.
Council discussed the project in-
formally on two occasions and is sup-
portive in principle, but not ready to
proceed until their concerns have been
addressed, which includes the actual
operating costs, said Dwight Stanford,
Town Chief Administrative Offcer
(CAO)
Initial research by administration
shows that the operating costs are ac-
tually much higher than the quoted
$6,000 a year, and that the water does
need to be changed every so often.
There is also a concern about how safe
the water is going to be as there is po-
tential for contamination from dogs, et
cetera.
The Lions began looking into the
project last fall and were encouraged
by Town staff to pursue a system that
would use less water, Geiger said. They
chose a new spray park for Strathmore
because of a survey performed in
2011, in which a spray park came back
as the most popular capital project the
Lions could undertake, Sharp said.
In early 2012, the group learned
Town council might not be interested
in pursuing the project, Geiger said.
At the March 21 council meeting,
council cited concerns about sanita-
tion of the recycled water, the cost of
operating the facility and land issues
as reasons they are unsure about pro-
ceeding.

The proposed spray park would re-
quire a professional to monitor the sys-
tem that recycles the water, which is
similar to how staff maintains chemi-
cals in a public pool.
Theres a fair amount of mainte-
nance, Geiger said.
The Lions Club estimates the total an-
nual cost to operate the park at $6,000
to $8,000, which includes the cost of
water. The current park requires no
one to operate, so the only cost is the
water.
The land is not owned by the Town,
which was a concern at the meeting,
but the club is not worried about ar-
ranging for the land to be turned over
to the Town if the project is approved,
said Sharp.
There is not a sewer line near the
proposed spray park, which would be
an issue moving forward.
Town council passed a motion to
have staff research and prepare a re-
port about the potential operating
costs and sanitation of the proposed
spray park.
The Lions are eager to get started
on the project, and would only require
some matching government grants to
proceed if given the green light from
the Town, according to Sharp.
The club is eager to work with the
Town on the project and understands
some of their concerns, he added.
There is no set date for the report
to come to council but it is expected in
the near future, Stanford said.

Bring your chequebook and an ap-
petite; the Lions Club of Strathmore is
hosting their annual auction on April 14
at the Strathmore Civic Centre.
Last year, over 380 people attended
the event, which has been a major
spring fundraiser for the Lions Club for
the past 23 years, said Wayne Sharp,
club president.
The event will feature a silent auction
and also a live auction, starting at 6 p.m.
Local businesses and individuals have
donated items for the auctions and
Sharp said there are some big-ticket
items being featured in the live auction.
Almost 50 volunteers come out to
make the event a success and all the
money raised goes to the Lions Club,
which will spend it all locally, Sharp
added. Doors open at 5 p.m. Lions Club
members have the $25 tickets for the
event and some will be available at the
door.

The Strathmore Rusty Spurs light horse 4-H club
began the new year with a clinic from a local vet-
erinarian, Miguel Moncayo. The clinic was amazing
and touched on wound care, common illnesses and
basic dental health.
After that came our mandatory public speaking
competition. The results were as follows: Junior;
Becky Driver 1st, Carlie Wells 2nd and Grace Olson
3rd. Intermediate; Martina Vergouwen 1st, Shelby
Stout 2nd and Brittany Kuhn 3rd. All of our Senior
Members chose to do presentations, and the results
were; Kate Harris and Breanne Grey 1st and Shaina
Kuhn and Shannon Coutts 2nd.
Wendy Kemble came to do a saddle ftting and
massage clinic for our club and we learned how to
position our saddles correctly and how to stretch
our horses. We are looking forward to riding les-
sons, which are starting up soon at Cloudwalker
stables, and more clinics to come.

Fule for Thought
Awhile back, someone told me that my English
classroom looked just like a 13 year-olds bedroom.
To explain, along with typical literature/literary de-
vice posters, I have a lot of Pop Culture posters
like super heroes, music-themed ones, as well as
cars, guitars basically anything that is suitable
for school and is colourful.
In addition, I have The Beatles action fgures
from the old 1960s cartoon. Youll notice I said
action fgures, not dolls, as some of my colleagues
have called them!
To me, dolls mostly carry the image of little
girls dressing up their toys in outfts that are inter-
changeable. They may then have little scenarios/
adventures with them. The ones I had were super-
hero or music fgures. I truly felt they were an in-
teresting part of my classrooms dcor! So, did the
students at times!
In one of my classes a few years ago, I had to take
a student whod missed some classes, to a super-
vised room, where he could write a test he missed.
Now one of the rules of teaching is to NOT leave
your classroom unattended for long, or at all. Sure
enough, even though Id only been gone minutes,
the damage to my action fgures was disturbing.
SOMEONE had taken all my fgures and posed
them in shocking positions! It was very traumatic
to see my heroes like Superman, the Flash, Spider-
Man, and Wonder Woman in poses that CANNOT
be described in this family paper! I was stunned,
but as in all situations with high school students, I
could not let them see me sweat!
I quickly re-positioned them, and thought (like
Deb often does) Id use this as a teaching moment.
Okay, you guys ha ha good joke!
Yeah, you got me but you should know that
none of this could happen to Spider-Man, his spi-
der sense would have warned him!
You cant expect that a hero like Superman
would be involved with this!
Oh sure, I know Batman lives in a cave with his
ward Robin, and a butler named Alfred, but that
doesnt mean anything!
I decided I was digging myself in deeper, and
steered them back to the unit we were working on,
BEFORE this horrible act!
A few weeks later, I was again stunned to see
four of my action fgures were gone from the shelf
top! I interrogated all my class, but to no avail.
Then a day later, I received the frst of four photos
of a Super Hero fgure in dangerous predicaments.
Yes, two students (who I later found out were on
my Sr. Girls Basketball team) had kidnapped them,
and with each photo, I had a task to perform for
their return!
First, there was a photo of Superman tied to a
green rock I could only worry of his pain next
to what was obviously Kryptonite! Short directions
were given on a note that said I had to sing the
theme from Barney on the school intercom for
his safe return! What could I do, but give in and
sing?! After my sad rendition of the song Super-
man mysteriously returned.
Next came photos of the human torch help up-
side down over a beaker of water!
Dash from The Incredibles with REAL scis-
sor blades poised around his neck, and lastly The
Hulk with what looked like a big nail through
him. Each day and its photo had me do different
things to get my action fgures back! I had to skip
(with a rope) down the hall at lunch, shoot 3-point
shots until I scored one. Luckily, I hit my second
one (Thank goodness for that PE Degree!).
I wish I could tell you the fnal ransom act I had
to do, but I cant remember; I must have blocked
out that trauma! Finally, I had gotten all the heroes
back; it was a harsh lesson!
I DID learn valuable lessons over those days. You
cant trust high school students, as they often have
devious minds. You have to keep a sense of hu-
mour, but its still a question of them vs. us, and
you have to protect yourself.
My action fgures are now safely in storage, ex-
cept for the Beatles and Elvis they wouldnt
DARE touch those! Or WOULD they?

school teacher, coach, husband and father of two

you can send him an e-mail at Pat.fule@shaw.ca)

Letters to the editor
To the Editor
I along with Danielle Smith and the Wildrose Cau-
cus will initiate the following policy improvements
related to Seniors Care and Health Care for the
Strathmore-Brooks Constituency:
Seniors Care I/we will:
Introduce a Kinship care program where fam-
ily members who would otherwise be employed
are compensated to provide extended care for their
loved ones.
Substantially increase resources for home care,
allowing seniors to age in the comfort of their own
homes and communities.
Scrap the PC governments new Seniors Drug
Plan which would introduce new premiums for tens
of thousands of Alberta seniors on fxed incomes.
Work with municipalities to allow seniors to de-
fer their property taxes against the equity in their
homes and to either freeze or restrict their property
tax hikes.
Initiate an Alberta Patient Wait Time Guarantee,
which will improve healthcare for seniors.
Health Care I/we will fx the system in order to
get better results by:
Committing to public health care and upholding
the fve principles of the Canada Health Act. They
are: it is publically administered, universal, compre-
hensive, affordable and accessible.
Learning from successful European public health
care models that have been drastically more effective
than ours.
Allowing for funding to follow the patient. If
funding follows the patient they are seen as a cus-
tomer and will receive better care.
Allowing for some non-proft and private facili-
ties to deliver health care to people with public in-
surance.
Decentralizing and returning power to local deci-
sion makers.
Ending the bullying and intimidation of health
care workers and establish whistleblower protection
for those who speak out.

The idea of going from town to city status has
been met with negativity since it was frst pro-
posed.
At the April 4 regular council meeting the pro-
posal was taken off the table. Councillor Pat Fule
made a motion to council to discontinue any ef-
forts in moving towards city status at this time,
and cancel the May 10 open house.
Councillor Earl Best said there have also been
comments in favour of city status. Best would like
to see the issue still brought to the public in order
to gain a better understanding of what the com-
munity does think of the potential status change.
Mayor Steve Grajczyk was a big advocate of city
status, and still is, but thinks the citizens them-
selves should take a look at it and bring council
any pros and cons to changing.
I think its a good thing but I think theres
other issues to work on frst, and I would be in
favour to just let it sit for awhile and then go from
there, said Grajczyk.
The motion was passed, with Councillor Best
opposed to it.
The reason I voted against going to city status
is simply that the I think the public needs more
time to digest the good reasons for going city sta-
tus, the pros and the cons, and I respect their
opinion, said Grajczyk.
Water treatment Plant
On March 7 at the regular council meeting EP-
COR attended with a schedule on how they want-
ed to go about decommissioning the former Water
Treatment Plant (WTP). EPCOR had a recommen-
dation for the trucking portion of the contract.
Council decided at that meeting that the trucking
portion of the work should be tendered out.
The tenders were sent out, and Chief Adminis-
trative Offcer Dwight Stanford began receiving
calls about the tender. Included on the Internet
package of the March 7 meeting on the towns
website it shows the recommended business de-
tails for the project including materials used and
prices. With the information available on the
website, it gives competitors creating a tender an
unfair advantage over the initial company recom-
mended.
After discussion with the town lawyer a recom-
mendation was fnally drawn up for the April 4
council meeting.
Stanford and administration put together a
recommendation for council to approve a 2012
capital project for the WTP alum bed disposal in
the amount of $319,042. Funds are to be drawn
from the fnancial stabilization reserve, and Grays
Limited will provide the trucking portion of the
contract.
minor Hockey
Wayne Hansen, President of Strathmore Minor
Hockey, asked the town for a letter of support
from the town for their bid with Hockey Alberta
to host the Alberta Cup in April of 2013 and 2014.
The Alberta Cup is a fve-day hockey tourna-
ment for bantam aged players. In order to make a
bid to host the event, Hansen needed the letter of
support signed by the Mayor and Chief Adminis-
trative Offcer before April 13.
Councillor Blokland stated that Hansen had told
him that minor hockey was looking for support
other than fnancial. Minor hockey would need
the arena to keep the ice in for a few extra weeks
and they would like to rent the Civic Centre for
the same time frame for open house forums for
the kids and teams at no charge.
The letter of support was given stating council
will support Strathmore Minor Hockeys efforts in
hosting the Alberta Cup for 2013 and 2014.
Financial StatementS
The Town has accumulated a surplus of $169
million in 2011. Though the number sounds high
approximately $154 million is equity that has al-
ready been spent on tangible capital assets.
The debt limit that the Municipal Government
Act sets out for each municipality is calculated
based on total revenues. Strathmores debt limit
is calculated at just over $30 million and the ac-
tual debt the town owes is just over $15 million.
At year end only 50 per cent of the Towns debt
capacity had been reached.

The mayor and council were at the Strathmore
Station on April 5 to greet patrons as their
food and drinks were served as part of their
Green Community Fundraiser. The Station
owner, Peter Klironomos presented a cheque
for $5,001 to the town at the end of the night.
The money is going to be used to beautify
the town. Special guests included the Brett
Wilson (l-r), Olympic Gold medalist michelle
Cameron, mayor Steve Grajczyk, Dave Hamil-
ton, Debbie murray and Peter Klironomos.

Grad season is upon us. Buying fan-
cy dresses and getting their hair and
nails done makes the experience for
many girls, and has become a tradition
within itself.
When everything is said and done
the dresses return to their garment
bags to hang in closets, often for many
years.
While trying to determine what to
do with her grad dress, former Strath-
more resident Loralee Lenox found
out about the Cinderella Project.
I had actually originally posted a
dress for sale and then when no one
was interested I fgured its no use just
keeping it, said Lenox.
Its a beautiful dress, so somebody
should appreciate it. I know from my
graduating year that there were girls
who couldnt afford the $800 or $900
dresses that everyone else was getting.
I fgured theres got to be some place
that I can donate to where someone
can appreciate it.
It was through her inquiries that she
was put in touch with Karen Harris,
a teacher at Strathmore High School.
Lenox was told about the Cinderella

Project, a project which collects gently
used grad, or bridesmaid dresses.
I heard of it through Karen Harris
and I looked it up quick on the In-
ternet. They take accessory donations,
dress donations and cash donations,
said Lenox.
They require volunteers to do the
hair and do the make-up.
The Cinderella Project was begun
in 2005 by Sir Winston Churchill High
School in Calgary. The staff and fash-
ion students set out to collect 20 to
30 used gowns to donate to students
around Calgary who were not able to
fnancially attend their grad banquets.
Since 2005 the project has grown,
and on March 17 there were over 300
girls getting pampered and picking
out dresses, the largest event yet.
The selected candidates are chosen
with assistance from the councilors
at school, as we provide assistance to
socially and fnancially disadvantaged
ladies. More and more girls are donat-
ing their dress back to the project and
lots ask if they can come back and
volunteer, as the experience is so re-
warding, said Maureen Henderson, a
board member of the Calgary Cinder-
ella Project.
Lenox is asking anyone interested in
donating to drop off the gently used
dresses at Crowther Memorial Junior
High with Colin Lenox. Loralee will be
in Strathmore on April 18 to pick them
up and take them into Calgary to the
Cinderella Project.

Riding in a helicopter can be an ex-
citing experience, and something not
many people will have a chance to do.
Thanks to a personal donation from
Mayor Steve Grajczyk, two high school
students will have a chance to fnd out
frst hand just how exciting it is.
Its going to be for the student thats
having a little bit of a tough time mak-
ing it, but needs a little push of en-
couragement, said Grajczyk.
Grajczyk placed the winning bid for
a helicopter ride at the Strathmore for
Haiti fundraiser in March, and has in
turn opted to re-donate it.
Principals at both Strathmore High
School and Holy Cross Collegiate will
determine which of their students will
participate. The students must have
marks of at least 65 per cent.
Im hoping to continue this year af-
ter year, said Grajczyk.
The fight will take place in June and
the helicopter will fy over Strathmore
and the area for approximately 30 min-
utes. Grajczyk is donating the fight as
a way to say congratulations to the
kids, while reminding them to keep it
up and keep going with their studies.

The Chinese, Pagans and others in ancient times
marked time by the lunar cycle and calendar, thus
13 was considered a very lucky number and in

Needlework enthusiasts will be happy to
know the Strathmore Municipal Library is offer-
ing a Stitch Together program. After realizing the
town does not have any sort of needlework or
knitting club, and that the library is a central
place where people can get together, an idea
was formed.
One of our board members volunteered to
facilitate a group, her name is Crystal McIntyre,
she is going to facilitate (and) just basically host
a club, said Carmen Lefebvre, Assistant Director
of Library Services.
Were opening it to everyone who is interest-
ed in needlework. Were not just talking about
the knitters or the crocheter, if youre interest-
ed in knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, quilting,
whatever you want, come on in and bring your
projects in.
Lefebvre said it is a very open club, and par-
ticipants will be offered coffee and cookies. It
will provide an opportunity for people to meet
other people who have similar interests, and the
same type of passion.
Knitters of all levels of experience are wel-
come to participate in the club, and because it
is a club, patrons are to bring their own projects
and supplies with them.
Our hope for this is that is going to be a
sort of group thats willing to help each other.
The way we see it is youre going to learn a
few things and youre going to make some new
friends while youre doing it, said Lefebvre.
It is not meant to be an instructional class, but
Lefebvre said people who are looking for an in-
structional class can attend and see what is be-
ing offered.
Maybe somebody will be willing to take you
to the side and teach you, but it is presented
as a club for people who know somewhat what
theyre doing, said Lefebvre.
The group will be held every second week on
Tuesday evenings, starting April 24 and will run
from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. For more information
on the club either call the library at 403-934-5440
or visit the website at www.strathmorelibrary.ca

On May 7 the fve men participating in the
Freedom Walk Journey for Justice will be com-
ing through Strathmore, and stopping to speak
at Holy Cross Collegiate before continuing their
walk.
The Freedom Walk is taking place as a way
to give victims of crime a voice, while advocat-
ing the plight of those who have suffered from
injustice.
Well touch on two things when we speak at
Holy Cross. One, the anti-bullying side of things
and if you are a victim in that age category, or
that age group, what steps you can take to alle-
viate that, said Constable Travis Juska with the
Calgary Police Service (CPS).
Secondly will be about what resources they
can access, and whats available specifcally in
that current location.
The other four men walking are, CPS Constable
Dan Rossi, RCMP offcer Mark MacDonnell, Mas-
ter Corporal Rob Skelly with the Armed Forces
and Andrew Rossi, Dans brother. The fve men
make up the fve walking members of the Five
with D.R.I.V.E foundation. Five with D.R.I.V.E is
a volunteer based organization, which runs on
the focus of making a difference in the lives of
others.
The purpose of the Freedom Walk is twofold:
one is to spread awareness about being victims
of crime and what support is available; and the
second is to raise donations for the Canadian
Crime Victim Foundation
Along with partnering with various police
service organizations in Canada, the Five with
D.R.I.V.E Foundation has also partnered with
the Canadian Crime Victim Foundation (CCVF).
The Canadian Crime Victim Foundation is a
national scholarship fund where if you are a vic-
tim of crime, a sibling is a victim of crime, or if
you start an anti-bullying or victims of crime ini-
tiative at your school, youre eligible for $5,000
a year for fve years, or up to a total of $25,000,
said Juska.
For somebody that was helped out through
scholarship opportunities in my post-secondary
career you really see what kind of difference
that can make.
The reason why we chose this is because the
Canadian Crime Victim Foundation is a perfect
tie for us between what we have an expectation
of what a police offcer does when they respond
to a victim, and it gives light and resources to
that victim beyond what they might have an ex-
pectation of, said Juska.
The research that we did shows that 97 per
cent of victims arent really sure exactly of where
they can go for help, or what resources they can
have, and yet we have a victims assistance unit...
that do tremendous work.
As a frst line responder its almost an ob-
ligation of that service to be able to come up
with that information, to be able to provide that
to the victims to make their experience, which
has been obviously traumatic and negative,
into a potential positive. Whether its through a
scholarship opportunity, whether it is through a
support group or whatever we happen to give
them.
As a police offcer you dont just show up and
youre done. You might be a guidance counsel-
lor that day, you might be social worker, you
might have to play the role of psychologist or
grief counsellor or whatever it happens to be.
We have an expectation, or should have an ex-
pectation, as police offcers to go above and be-
yond to be a service that require it in whatever
capacity that might be.
Members of the community are encouraged to
join the men on their walk as they head east.
Program Coordinator for Strathmore Regional
Victim Services Lesley Hering said she plans to
join for a little while, and is happy to see some-
thing like the Freedom Walk taking place.
I think its great, I think a lot of people are
unaware of what is available to victims of crime,
said Hering.
They dont know, they dont know there is f-
nancial benefts, they dont know they can have
a voice through our victim impact statement. I
dont know what they (the men) are going to
be saying in their presentation but theyre just
speaking about victims of crimes so its got to
be good, its going to get the word out so thats
great.
The walk starts in Stanley Park in Vancouver
on April 22 and will fnish 4,655 kilometres later
in Queens Park in Toronto on June 23.
We average just around 60 to 70 kilometres a
day. So our shortest mileage day is 21 and our
highest is 132 depending on the day, said Juska.
On May 5 the men will be making a pit stop
while walking through Calgary to host a fund-
raiser they have planned. The silent auction and
fundraiser will be at the Redwater Grille at 250
6th Ave SW. The goal is to raise at least $500,000
for the Canadian Crime Victims Scholarship
Fund and the CCVF Secondary School Scholar-
ship. The fundraiser is just one more way the
men plan to try to reach their goal.
Anyone looking to donate items, or to donate
to the cause can contact Travis Juska at TJuska@
calgarypolice.ca, or go to www.freedomwalk.ca
for more information.

Arno doerkson
Progressive Conservative
Biography: Arno Doerkson is the current MLA for the Strathmore Brooks area.
He was elected to his frst term as a Member of the Legislative Assembly on March
3, 2008. Arno currently serves as Chair of the Standing Committee on Community
Services and as a member of the Private Bills Committee and the Privileges and Elec-
tions, Standing Orders and Printing Committee. Prior to his service as a Member of the Legislative Assembly of
Alberta, Arno was the owner/manager of a farming/ranching business for over 20 years. He served as chair on
the Alberta Beef Producers organization, through the BSE crisis from 2003 to 2004. He traveled internationally
as a representative of the Alberta and Canadian livestock industry. Arno has been very active with the farming
community. He has been a member of many agricultural and livestock associations. In his community, he is a
member of the Gem Curling Club, local church board, Gem Home and School Association and Camp Evergreen.
Arno and his wife, Wanda, and three sons live in Gem, Alberta.
response to questions: Prior to becoming your MLA, I was very active in the community. I have spent
over 10 years in associations representing Albertans who make their livelihood in Agriculture. I have an under-
standing of how the government operates at the local, provincial, federal and international levels. This experience
has allowed me to be effective in representing the concerns and interests of the residents of the constituency of
Strathmore-Brooks over the past four years. With your support, I will continue for the next four years.
I rely on common sense and past experience in decision making. I fnd that most often there are common
sense solutions to complex problems.
About healthcare initiatives: The recently announced Family Care Centers will help improve access to medical
professionals for Albertans and our families. These clinics will be complimentary to the Primary Care Initiative that
was developed to improve access to family physicians and other frontline health care providers. The family care
clinics will be developed in consultation with members of our community to ensure they will meet our local needs.
While there have been incremental changes in the cost of living, Alberta leads the country in employment op-
portunities. We will introduce new initiatives to encourage active lifestyles for Albertas children and reduce the
effective cost of participation. We are committed to doubling the current funding to amateur sporting organiza-
tions, and introducing the Alberta Childrens Physical Activity Tax Credit of up to $500 a year per child. The PC
government is committed to our post-secondary students. It will make a number of changes to student fnancial
aid. These changes will include eliminating parental contribution and part-time earnings from eligibility consider-
ations for the provincial portion of all student loans. We will increase the interest free grace period to 12 months
from six months after graduation, and the introduce graduation and retention grants of up to $2,000.
I have heard from many of our seniors who want to stay in their homes close to their family and loved ones.
We have proposed a Property Tax Deferral policy to assist our seniors who own their homes to pay their property
tax through a home equity loan.
Research and development will and has played a critical role in helping to diversify our economy. This would
include areas such as agricultural technology and practices, and our natural resource production.
Fracking allows our producers to extract oil-and-gas when conventional technologies are not effective. I be-
lieve we have a regulatory framework that protects our environment and that it is important that this framework
be guided by sound science and technological advances.

With the provincial election only a few weeks away
we decided to ask our candidates some questions voters
want to know.
The Green Party has no candidates running in the
Strathmore/Brooks division at this time.
Targeted questions for Strathmore/Brooks Candidates
1. Why should people vote for you?
2. What decision making process do you use to determine a stance on an issue?
3. Suggest one measure to improve patient healthcare accountability and accessibility?
4. What can be done to help middle class families with rising living costs
5. Suggest one measure that would address seniors needs?
6. How can the province diversify the economy, in areas other than natural resources?
7. What is your stance on fracking?
Brad BAiLey
NDP
Biography: Brad Bailey is an energet-
ic Edmonton based activist who is deeply
committed to social justice and democrat-
ic reform. Brad has a multifaceted under-
standing of Albertas political climate. Brad is completing his degree
at the University of Alberta with a focus on philosophy, psychology,
and biological sciences. He volunteers with new immigrant services.
He volunteered at a family owned and operated local business and
now works as a street outreach worker. Brad is committed to being
a strong voice for Strathmore-Brooks by preventing further school
closures, getting needed programs, and encouraging youth engage-
ment in politics
response to questions: People should vote for me because
I am a passionate individual dedicated to social change and demo-
cratic reform. In an election as dynamic as this, its crucial that voters
are pre-sented with strong alternatives. I stand beside Brian Mason
and the NDP because we are committed to representing all Albertans
in the legislature and we say its time for change in Alberta.
Decision making always comes down to principles. The New
Democrats always put families frst, and doing so means putting
public interest ahead of private. First and foremost come the needs
of the Albertan people. We dont believe in back room negotiating.
We place great value on transparent, fair, and all-inclusive decision
making that ensures sure no one gets left behind.
The best way to provide good quality, accessible healthcare for
everyone is to keep it public! Our publicly funded, publicly delivered
healthcare system and the principle of universal access to quality
care has come under attack in this election. The New Democrats will
guarantee fully public healthcare that is accessible and affordable for
all Albertans, not just the rich. The current government hasnt come
close to fulflling their own targets for wait times, availability of hospi-
tal beds or the required number of doctors and nurses.
We need to start regulating the cost of power for Albertans. The
current governments deregulation of power means that we Albertans
now pay the highest real rates for power in Canada. The New Demo-
crats are in favour of making the Alberta Utilities Commission inde-
pendent from industry. This would help protect Albertans and make
sure that all consumers are benefting. To make life more affordable
for everyone, the NDP propose an increase in minimum wage to $10
dollars an hour; limit the size of rent increases and limit fees and
fundraising for school essentials. One measure we believe needs
to be taken for seniors is to increase funding to homecare by $100
million dollars improving services to more than 100,000 Albertans
in their homes. Seniors have the right to live in dignity in their own
homes as long as possible, and when they cant, ensure they have
access to quality long-term care.
Working with trade unions to increase apprenticeship training and
launching a buy Alberta local marketing campaign are a few NDP
initiatives that promote industry other than oil in Alberta. We support
creating an educational certifcate in organic farming to add value to
Alberta farmers crops.
The New Democrats are concerned that modern fracking is a new
technology and theres much we dont know about it. Alberta has
hundreds of thousands of wells now, and so it is hard to know what
might happen once high-pressure chemicals are injected into rock
that has so many disruptions already.
Alberta has taken a casual approach as the complexity of fracking
has grown. It is not the same as a few years ago, relative to the use
of chemicals.
Albertans need to be sure their water stays uncontaminated; some
people are already worried that their well water has been affected.
Reports seem to point to fracking having effects at substantial dis-
tance from the actual activity. Policy decisions on fracking need to
be made based on scientifc fndings, instead of bowing to pressure
from industry. Therefore, Albertas NDP supports reviewing hydraulic
fracturing through an independent scientifc panel, to make sure we
have the facts on the effects of this technology, and would not permit
fracking until such a review is completed.
Jason hALe
Wildrose
Biography: Jason Hale was born and raised near Bassano. In 2010, the Hale fam-
ily celebrated its centennial anniversary of living in the region. Jason, along with his
wife and two sons currently run a cow/calf operation. He also works as a consultant
in the oil and gas industry. Jason graduated from SAIT with a diploma in Chemical
Technology. Jason was also a Professional Bullfghter for 10 years, a member of the Bassano Rodeo committee
for the past eight years, and a Director on the Bassano Ag Society for the past three years. He has regularly vol-
unteered as a coach for hockey and baseball. Jasons father was a quadriplegic for 40 years he and his family
have extensive experience with the healthcare systems.
response to questions: I am running because the Wildrose Party and I are committed to working for
Albertans, bringing the government back to the people. It is time for a change.
I use a common sense approach on issues, what is best for the people of this area. I will consult with individu-
als directly related to the issue at hand. My job is to represent the people.
We need to decentralize healthcare and bring back local decision making. We need to work with local health-
care professionals and create a system that puts Albertans frst.
We will be helping families by giving a $2,000 Child Tax Credit, $500 tax credit for fees spent on their childrens
sports, arts, and cultural activities. A review of federal and provincial tax law will identify other ways in which
the law unfairly penalizes families with children, and we will work to implement tax reforms that will lesson the
fnancial burdens families face.
We need to ensure seniors have proper housing so they do not have to spend their time in acute care beds or
in other facilities away from family.
As a province, we must fnd ways to boost local economies, attract new businesses to communities, which will
create jobs and strengthen local economies.
In regards to frackingI have been involved in the oil/gas sector in Alberta for many years. In order to produce
gas and oil from wells you must frack them. Companies must insure that this process will not affect adjacent
landowners and is environmentally responsible. The ERCB has a strict set of rules that must be followed. There
have been substantial technological developments with fracking procedures and we must continue to develop
procedures that will ensure the public and environment will not be affected.
Alex Wychopen is the Strathmore-Brooks
candidate for the Alberta Liberal Party.

With the impending election, many people are hearing plenty about
the provincial race for premier. What some may not know is when you
cast your ballot for your local party candidate, youll also need to vote
for your potential Alberta Senate representative.
The senate of Canada is appointed. Since the 1980s Alberta has
been electing three candidates for the next Alberta vacancy in the
Senate. When the next vacancy does occur, the Prime Minster then
chooses one of those three candidates to fll the seat. The next vacan-
cy will occur in 2013 when current Senator Bert Brown reaches the
Senates retirement age. In 2014 Joyce Fairbairn will also be reaching
the mandatory age of retirement, opening another seat in the Senate.
This is only Albertas fourth Senate race.
Doug Black could not be reached for comment about his campaign.

Len believes a long term sustainability plan is needed to enable Can-
ada to compete with the worlds fastest growing economies in China,
India, and South America. A Long Term Sustainability Plan should ad-
dress and provide solutions to:
1. Canadas Municipal Infrastructure Debt
By implementing a 25-50 year plan to address Canadas $123B
municipal infrastructure debt and proper funding for municipalities.
By implementing a national transit/transportation system that will
enhance public transit and link rural and urban municipalities.
2. Seniors Support Needs
By implementing British Columbia Provincial Property Tax Deferral
Program across Canada;
By addressing funding for Canadas aging population.
3. Aboriginal Issues
With all orders of government working together to meet aboriginal
needs.
4. Rural and Northern Canada Sustainability
By implementing recommendations from Alberta Association of
Municipal Districts and Counties (AAMDC) Report: One Vision, Many
Voices How To Build A Sustainable Rural Canada;
By planning and developing a corridor from Churchill to Prince
Rupert which may include but not be limited to road, rail, utility and
pipeline.
By increasing high speed connectivity in Rural and Remote areas of
Canada to ensure readily available access to critical information and
promote opportunity.
5. Economic Development
By reducing traffc congestion that costs business billions of dollars;
By eliminating provincial trade barriers through the implementation
of the New West Partnership Trade Agreement across Canada;
By establishing fexible portable pension plans for Canadians.
raymond

Wildrose
Raymond Germain was born and raised in St. Paul, AB. As one of ten
children, Ray learned early the values and strengths of family. He grew up
with a love of hunting and fshing and a great appreciation for the outdoors.
Ray and Loree are the parents of two sons and the proud grandparents
of four. Being an active grandparent is one of his greatest joys.
He worked 13 years in construction, most of which he was self em-
ployed. For the past 25 years he has been working in the oil and gas in-
dustry.
Ray has given his time and energy over the years to hockey, fundraising
for charities, and local projects. His strong family values and a desire to
help young people led him to serve on the regional Youth Justice Com-
mittee for 5 years.
rob

Wildrose
Rob Gregory brings an extensive career in justice and law enforcement
to the Wildrose Senate team. An eleven year veteran of the Peel Regional
Police Service and full member of the Royal Canadian Legion, he moved to
Calgary in 1991. Trained by Alberta Justice as a Provincial Prosecutor, Rob
worked for the Calgary Crown Prosecutors Offce for 12 years. In 2001, he
was recognized by the Solicitor Generals Offce for his contribution toward
educating citizens in Albertas Traffc Court process.
Since 2003, Rob has owned and operated Gregory Ticket Offce, a para-
legal agency specializing in traffc ticket defense. Rob has a Diploma of
Law & Security Administration from Niagara College and is a graduate of
the Ontario Police College. A strong supporter of Stephen Harpers Conser-
vatives and the Wildrose Party, Rob lives in Northwest Calgary with his wife
Patty and their two dogs.
Vitor
marCiano
Wildrose
Vitor immigrated to Edmonton from Portugal with his working class parents in
1974. He has lived his whole life in Edmonton, and he and his wife Krista have one
daughter.
Vitor received a Bachelors of Commerce from the University of Alberta in 1991,
and in 1992 became one of the youngest sessional instructors in the history of the
UofAs business faculty. After leaving the UofA, Vitor was a successful entrepreneur,
establishing and operating two automotive businesses. He later served as the Ex-
ecutive Director of a trade association.
A life-long activist in conservative politics, Vitor has worked for dozens of conser-
vative campaigns throughout Canada and has trained hundreds of fellow activists.
Vitor joined the Wildrose Party in 2009, and later served as the partys Executive
Director. A committed federal Conservative, Vitor served three years as the National
Policy Chair of the Conservative Party of Canada and fve years on its National Coun-
cil representing Alberta.
As a Wildrose Senate Candidates, Vitor Marciano, Rob Gregory and Raymond Germain are campaigning on the fol-
lowing priorities:
1) Senate Reform All three will carry on the important work of Albertas current elected Senator, Bert Brown, in
achieving the Alberta born dream of a Senate that is Elected, Effective, and Equal. They fully support Prime Minister
Harpers efforts to introduce non-renewable term limits to Senate appointments.
2) Property Rights All three believe property rights are an essential cornerstone for any free society. As a Senator for
Alberta, all of the men will protect Canadians rights to own property, and work to have property rights formally recognized
in our Constitution.
3) Protecting our Economy Albertans are proud to have the most ethical, most environmentally friendly energy sector
in the world. Our energy industry is absolutely vital to the future of the Canadian economy. As a Wildrose Senator, the men
will protect the Alberta energy sector and the jobs and livelihoods of Albertans and their families.
4) Grassroots governance All three men believes that Federally or Provincially, Albertans have always been best
served by governments that respect the common wisdom of the common people. As Executive Director for the Wildrose
Party and National Policy Chair for the CPC, Vitor has worked with two grassroots parties in developing member driven
policy. Vitor Marciano is committed to fghting for the common sense of Albertans to be heard in Ottawa.
Raymond Germain will fght for the common sense and conservative values of everyday Albertans to be heard in
Ottawa.
Rob Gregorys long career in justice and law enforcement will help him ensure the common sense of Albertans in
refected in the laws of Canada.
mike
Shaikh
Conservative
A long time federal and provincial conservative, and a Calgarian for nearly
40 years, Mike Shaikh is a successful businessman and a tireless volunteer and
philanthropist. Mike has sat on dozens of nonproft and business boards and
currently chairs the Calgary Police Commission. A champion of higher education
and community, he has received both the Premier Klein Leader Service Award
and the University of Calgary Distinguished Alumni MAX Award.
Mike supports many causes, including: the University of Calgary, People
for Progress Foundation, Education Matters, Amica, the Canadian Air Transport
Security Authority, the Chartered Accountants Education Foundation and the Al-
berta Childrens Hospital Foundation. He is also a director for four public oil and
gas frms and has served with the Canadian Association of Police Boards, the
Kiwanis Club of Calgary, the Alberta Securities Commission and the Alberta Law
Enforcement Response Team.
Mike and his wife Linda have three daughters and two grandsons.
Mikes frst priority in the Senate would be to stand up for what is important to
Albertans. It is vital for Canadians to understand the importance of Albertas en-
ergy and other natural resources and securing the markets and talents needed
to develop those resources.
Mike is a frm believer that the Senate can be more effective and responsive.
As Albertas next Senator he would:
1- Bring energy, enthusiasm, and a rich diversity of experience to the Upper
House.
2- Work collaboratively and towards consensus on issues such as energy,
health care, education, safe communities, immigration and nation building.
3- Put forward initiatives for a national safe communities strategy and a
national program to encourage, recognize and celebrate volunteerism and chari-
table giving.
elizabeth
JohannSon
EverGreen Party
Elizabeth came to Alberta over a decade ago, for love of a dashing young
man, whom she promptly married. They have two daughters, ages 7 and 9.
She has worked for Alberta Computers for Schools for the past 7 years, and
is also currently pursuing a professional accounting designation. Computers
for Schools is a registered charity which refurbishes computers (donated by
governments and businesses) and distributes them to schools and non-profts
across Alberta.
As a parent, Elizabeth has been active at her childrens school and is cur-
rently Vice-Chair of the Parent Council.
Community involvement is also important to her, and she spent several years
as the Treasurer of the CGIT Board of Edmonton Society, which runs a summer
camp on Pigeon Lake.
Although she spends her days doing fnancial work and studying accounting,
she is not only a left-brain thinker. She has a strong creative energy demon-
strated by her B.A. Honours in Theatre and Drama. She has been active in the
Edmonton theatre community, frequently directing or acting in plays at the Ed-
monton International Fringe Theatre Festival, and directing and performing with
several community theatre groups.
Elizabeth is running as a candidate for Senator-in-Waiting because she was
disappointed in the lack of diversity in Senate candidates eight years ago. When
she received her Senate ballot in the last Senate election there were no candi-
dates she felt comfortable supporting.
Elizabeth believes in Senate reform and electing Senators-in-Waiting is a
step in the right direction, but says more work needs to be done. Increasing
the diversity of candidates to better refect Albertas political landscape is one
step. Our current frst-past-the-post voting system often skews election results
so they dont refect the percentage of the popular vote obtained by each of
the parties. We should be looking at moving the Senate toward a Proportional
Representation system.
She is running as an EverGreen Party of Alberta candidate because the struc-
ture has been set up to refect provincial parties. The EverGreen Party of Alberta
is the provincial Green Party. If elected and appointed to the Senate Elizabeth
would be sitting as a Green in Elizabeth Mays caucus.
She believes a strong economy and a healthy environment must go hand in
hand. In Alberta a disproportionate proportion of the economy is dependent on
commodities. This puts us at the mercy of international markets and we end up
in the boom and bust cycle that we have seen repeatedly in Alberta. Now, when
times are good, is when we most need to be making investments for our future
and diversifying our economy. Diversifying our economy makes a stronger more
stable economy, better able to weather drops in commodity prices. We want
Alberta to have good jobs available for our children and grandchildren.
ian
UrqUhart
Independant
I grew up in Trail in southeastern B.C. My wife Theresa and I brought our
young family to Edmonton in 1987 and Ive taught at the University of Alberta
ever since. For the last 25 years Ive been privileged to meet thousands of stu-
dents. Theyve impressed me in many ways - not least because they illustrate
what a rich, diverse people todays Albertans are.
Im running as an Independent in the Senate nominee election because the
hyperpartisanship of todays federal politics cripples common sense. It cripples
Ottawas ability to fnd compromises that can deliver the healthy futures my stu-
dents and our children deserve. Robo-calling is the latest example of this. As an
independent Senator I wont be forced to toe a Liberal or Conservative party line.
At ianforsenate.ca youll see my dream of the Next Alberta. Its a dream

where we get past the myth that prosperous economies must be sacrifced if we
want a healthy environment. Thats nonsense. I want my daughters to be able to
take their children into Albertas foothills and badlands, just as Theresa and I did
with them, and feel the wonder of those places.
My Next Alberta also wants a strong petroleum economy; the billions in fed-
eral taxes the oil sands will generate are vital to my aspirations for Albertans to
be able to use more renewable energy to light our homes. Here Im inspired by
what former Premier Lougheed did in the 1970s to kickstart the development of
todays oil sands economy.
The Next Alberta also wants to empower Albertans and Albertas communi-
ties. Ottawa needs to be a better listener. As we all try to adapt to an uncertain
future Ottawa needs to lend a helping hand in the form of accessible and af-
fordable post-secondary training opportunities. It needs to ensure municipalities
have the stable revenues they need to offer Albertans the infrastructure we all
depend on.
Please join me in helping to build this Next Alberta. On April 23rd please help
send the independent Albertan to the Canadian Senate.

The Wheatland Athletics Associa-
tion honoured their three teams at the
annual awards banquet April 6 at the
Strathmore Civic Centre.
The peewee Braves, bantam Warriors
and midget Chiefs teams presented
their top scorer, top defenceman, rook-
ie-of-the-year, most improved, most
sportsmanlike and team MVP for the
2011-2012 season.
Since Ive been here, this has been
our lead season, said WAA President
Sandy Henry. Im not sure that we
really could have asked for more I
guess you always beg for more, but it
was (a great year). I did some stats and
(between the three teams), we played
101 league games and we won 65, lost
26 and tied 10. So we were in that 65
winning percentage, which puts us in
a really good spot.
All our teams had success, we fell a
little short in provincials, but all (three
teams) got there.
It was a great season.
The Chiefs, which won the regular
season banner and the league cham-
pionship banner last year, repeated as
the SCAHL Champions.
Matthew Quigley of the Braves and
Shane Fraser of the Warriors were
presented the Craig Kletzel Memorial
Award, while Zach Wittenburg of the
Chiefs repeated as the SCAHL Top De-
fenceman.
The WAA also presented Alan Bar-
low and Murray Christiansen with the
Members of Distinction award
Here is a list of the award winners.

For the frst time in franchise history,
the Wheatland Kings hosted a rookie
tryout camp April 3-5 in the hopes of
fnding their next crop of players.
The local junior-B team hosted 36
midget-aged players who were looking
become fulltime Kings either this com-
ing season or next.
According to Kings head coach and
general manager Doug Murphy, the
camp is designed to get the players ac-
cumulated to the junior level.
It lets the guys go out and use the
half visor (for the frst time) against
players their own age, said Murphy. It
lets us review the players and give us a
gauge as to where those players (are).
The purpose is to get those guys
to know us there will be a bunch of
them that we will be asking to come-
back to the camp in the fall.
According to Murphy, there are at
least a dozen players at the camp that
he thinks can slide into the lineup in
the very near future.
The team purposely kept the num-
bers small to make two teams, rather
than a cluster of players who dont have
a realistic shot at making the squad.
Murphy added that most junior-A
camps take place on the weekend, so
they decided to go with a weekday
camp to attract the players who will at-
tend both levels.
It gives the guys the opportunity
to get ready for a junior-A camp that
they may be going to, said Murphy. It
(also) gives them another opportunity
to go to another camp.
Even though a lot can happen be-
tween now and the new season, Mur-
phy said the camp was a useful tool for
the team.
It went really, really good. Theres
probably 10 really, really strong pros-
pects and were really impressed with
a couple of guys off the midget Tier 1
team, he said. The camp really helps
us get our name out there and it helps
players and parents see what our orga-
nization is like.

early 1990s and is looking to grow in
the future.
With the current format, there is a lot
of open ice, which makes for some fun
and exciting hockey to watch.
According to Henry, roughly 100
players took part in the weekend tour-
nament, which is a lower number than
last year.
There are defnitely a couple of fac-
tors, said Henry of the decline in at-
tendance. Our bantam and peewee
teams played a lot more hockey this
year (with the playoff and provincials),
so they arent nearly as fresh or enthu-
siastic about putting on the equipment
one more time.
Then defnitely Easter took some
families out of the community with
other commitments.
Despite all those factors, it was a
successful way to close out the 2011-
2012 hockey season.

In an attempt to lower fees and pro-
mote less travel, Strathmore Minor
Hockey (SMH) will present an innova-
tive concept at their Annual General
Meeting on April 20 at the Strathmore
Family Centre.
The board will offer the idea of start-
ing a house league with Okotoks, Air-
dire and Cochrane for those who do not
want to continue playing in the Central
Alberta Hockey League (CAHL).
According to SMH President Wayne
Hansen, players and parents will be able
to choose which league they want to
take part in.
This could happen if we want it to,
but now it is up to our membership to
make that decision, said Hansen. Its
not a decision for the board to make, its
a decision for the membership to make.
That is why it is very important for our
members get out to the AGM and tell us
what they think. We need to know what
they think, whether its good or whether
its bad, or whether theyre indifferent.
They are the ones who control the
direction we take minor hockey.
According to Hansen, the proposed
house league would offer a cheaper al-
ternative to players, as the fees would be
much lower and travel would be within
the hour range. The proposed league
would practice once a week, rather than
the current twice-a-week schedule with
CAHL.
One of my biggest things since I got
on the board was the cost of hockey be-
ing very expensive, said Hansen. To
some (parents), that might not matter
but some parents dont have that luxury.
So if we have even one kid who is not
playing hockey because its too expen-
sive and we have this ability to make
it more affordable for them and we get
them involved, then I think weve done
our job.
SMH will also use the AGM to feld
questions from members and recognize
the accomplishments of this past season.
Eighteen of the 20 minor hockey
teams made the playoffs and six of those
went on to win a banner.
It equates to the best year Strathmore
Minor Hockey had, said Hansen. Then
you look at the double-A program,
which is carded by SMH. The peewee
team made the playoffs for the frst time
in a while with a lot of local Strathmore
kids on the team. The bantam team won
the North Division and lost in Game 5
of the league championship fnal. Our
midget team won the league champion-
ship for the second year in a row.
It was a fantastic year for Strathmore
Minor Hockey.
