BARODENSE

Weighting Material
Product Description

Product Data Sheet

BARODENSE weighting material is ground Hematite and meets API Specification 13A Section 8 for drilling fluid Hematite. It is used to increase the density of drilling fluids to control formation pressures. BARODENSE weighting material has a specific gravity of 4.8 and can be used to increase the density in oiland water-based drilling fluids up to 25 lb/gal (3.0 SG). BARODENSE weighting material has a higher specific gravity than barite, and so requires less total product to achieve the same fluid density, but tends to be more abrasive than BAROID weighting material. Helps increase the density of drilling fluids up to 26 lb/gal (3115 kg/m) Helps control formation pressures Helps stabilize the borehole

Applications / Functions

Advantages

Has a higher specific gravity than barite Has a lower attrition rate than barite Environmentally responsible and nonmagnetic Helps contribute a lower solids content by volume than a comparably weighted barite drilling fluid Appearance Bulk density, compacted Bulk density, uncompacted Specific gravity Reddish-brown powder 127lb/ft (2034 kg/m) 168lb/ft (2691kg/m) 4.8

Typical Properties

Recommended Treatment

Add as needed to increase weight of drilling fluid. Use the following weight-up formulas for oil-based and water-based systems. For 1 bbl starting volume X = 1682 (Wf - Wi )/(40.1 - Wi ) For 1 bbl final volume X = 1682 (Wf - Wi )/(40.1 - Wf ) Where X = BARODENSE weighting material required, lb/bbl Wi = Initial mud weight, lb/gal Wf = Final desired mud weight, lb/gal Note: Oil muds prepared with BARODENSE weighting material will help exhibit lower electrical stability readings compared to those muds formulated with barite. This does not denote lower emulsion instability but conductivity of the iron-based materials found in hematite.
