Collaboration with International Universities

PDPU aspires to be the energy university of India and therefore it promotes learning, teaching and research activities focused on the energy domain. The University has taken a bold step to develop worldwide research collaboration while taking some of the greatest global challenges, namely energy conservation and to meet the global standards of education. JOINT RESEARCH INITIATIVES

University of Houston Research needs to be formulated to design well-perforation as well as hydro-fracture jobs to suit the orientation of the natural fracture system of the formation. Any other appropriate well stimulation process needs to be addressed along with the study. Multicomponent processing and study of seismic/VSP data for clear understanding of lithology and fracture pattern. This study would help to understand the light oil and gas reserves which is mainly controlled by silty-sandy lithology. Additionally, this study is also intended to focus around well no. School of Petroleum Technology offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Petroleum Engineering, namely B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D. The School emphasizes on integrated development through teaching, research and overall grooming of the students. The School has established Science, Engineering and Petroleum Technology laboratories apart from state-of-the-art academic, research, recreational and residential facilities.

B.Tech in Petroleum Engineering

School of Petroleum Technology offers a 4 year B.Tech programme in Petroleum Engineering with desirable flexibility to young aspirants seeking admission. The curriculum is modern, flexible as well as futuristic with a strong emphasis on sound fundamentals, problem solving, and practical exposure to real life situations. This would be achieved through active and continued partnership, right from the first semester, with GSPCs (Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation) on-shore and off-shore Oil & Gas Operations as well as with other E&P Companies and National and International Universities, Consultants and Business Associates. This will also ensure regular update of curriculum through incorporation of latest developments and operational challenges in Oil & Gas activities focusing on exploration and production.
The special features of the academic programme consist of: (I) (ii) Introduction of Design and Innovation in the first year to orient students to original and lateral thinking. Encourage multi-disciplinary approach and thinking through internship during the three summers (Rural, Industry and Research), to provide a better understanding of challenges in Indian rural and urban landscape. Top-down approach from 'System to Components' to better appreciate holistic education.

The courses in the first and second year are generic in nature and focused on the basic and engineering sciences in an integrated manner. The courses at the third and final year of the B.Tech programme are specifically designed to cater to the engineering and technical needs of the energy sector with emphasis on the students. Students work on a number of short duration projects during the semesters and sign off with a year-long B.Tech project, preferably in an Oil & Gas company.

Internship Initiatives
RURAL INTERNSHIP
As per the directive of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, a Technical Programme should comprise of at least 20% courses on Humanities and Management. For better execution of policies during ones professional career, a technocrat is required to come to terms with the realities of life. In India, rural population comprises of nearly 70% of the countrys total population. In a developing nation like India, cities are getting saturated rapidly in many ways and the onus on administrative machinery is to focus on rural areas for development. In this regard, it has become mandatory to know and understand rural life and its demography. It is in this reference, School of Petroleum Technology, under the aegis of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, has introduced Summer Rural Internship (SRI) as a course in B.Tech Petroleum Engineering programme for first-year students. OBJECTIVES To strengthen understanding on concepts of rural development with specific reference to the Indian context. T provide exposure to grassroot realities, in the rural setting with o a focus on participation in interventions by NGOs. To strengthen insights and develop skills on participatory methodologies and tools used in rural development. To understand and appreciate broader contexts of other stakeholders, like government agencies, donors and local self governance institutions, while participating in existing field projects. To facilitate cross-cultural learning on development issues as well as other areas of inter-personal growth and learning.
Internship Initiatives
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING
Engineering studies have two systems contributing side by side to the enhancement of comprehension and study skills. The first is the theoretical systems; conducted primarily in the form of lectures, tutorials and labs, which are accompanied by frequent consultation of various knowledge sources. The second is the practical system, in the form of Industrial and Research Training, during which the students apply theories learnt. The third year B.Tech students are scheduled to go through Oil & Gas Industrial and Research Training, envisaged with a view to make students familiar with industry operations in Oil & Gas industry including exploration, drilling, production, transportation, refining, distribution, electricity, generation and research activities. The ultimate goal of the training is to accelerate integration into professional careers once the graduate is hired for doing a certain task. This can be achieved through many activities or objectives: OBJECTIVES To integrate all learning in real life environment To expose students to all industrial engineering tasks like design, production, maintenance, services, equipment operations, technology and operational techniques To enhance students scientific and practical capabilities. It makes the student perceive the practical signification of the academic topics handled at the faculty, and direct his thinking to the practical aspects. To give the student, the feeling of a professional career he/she is heading for, before graduation. Industrial and Research Training can represent a valuable asset for the graduate and for the employer. For the latter, post-hiring training can be sensible shortened.
INDUSTRIAL ORIENTATION
Industrial Orientation facilitates understanding about application of basic science and engineering acquired during first two years of curriculum and developing their understanding about Oil and Gas Industry operation that will further facilities their academic and research learning for the subjects to be taught during 3rd and 4th year of B.Tech Programme. It is in this reference, 2nd year B.Tech students are scheduled to visit various industries across the country with a view to get familiar with Industry Operations in Oil and Gas sector including exploration, drilling, production, transportation, refining, distribution, electricity generation and research. OBJECTIVES To expose students to various operations of Oil and Gas industry and enhance their understanding about application of science and engineering principles studied in first two years of B.Tech programme. To develop students' understanding about oil and gas industry operations and facilitate their academic and research learning for the 3rd and 4th year B.Tech programme. To develop students' understanding of Oil and Gas value chain. To expose students to upstream, midstream and downstream operations of oil and gas sector.
INTERNATIONAL EXPOSURE
International Exposure program launched for 3rd year B.Tech students under which students will go for 3 weeks Orientation Programme to International Universities, namely University of Tulsa, University of Houston & University of Oklahoma in USA. The programme envisions providing exposure of state-of-art technology in the upstream sector, to encourage petroleum engineering graduates from PDPU to be more competitive as global professionals in the petroleum sector and to motivate students to take up research & development programmes in their respective areas of interest.

The M.Tech Programme in Petroleum Engineering is ideal for any engineering graduate who desires to begin work or to improve his position in the Oil and Gas industry. The School offers a 2 year M.Tech Programme in Petroleum Engineering. The candidate should have a B.Tech Degree in Petroleum / Mechanical / Chemical / Electrical & Electronics / Instrumentation & Control Engineering. The M.Tech Programme offers a curriculum which is modern, flexible and futuristic with a strong emphasis on sound fundamentals, problem solving and practical exposure to real life situations.

Ph.D in Petroleum Engineering

The goals of the Doctoral Programme at the School of Petroleum Technology comprise the following: 'The development of the highest quality of scientific and technical manpower to cater to the needs of Industry and R & D organisations based in the energy sector'. These programmes with their courses and specialized research aims to prepare students for the corporate world by enhancing their perspectives and breadth of knowledge related to the principle divisions of their respective fields of specialization. The School is in the process of building state-of-art facilities in the petroleum sector viz., reservoir engineering, enhanced oil recovery, paleontology, petroleum geology, plasma applications as well as solar energy, new energy sources and application of nano technology in energy devices. Candidates for the Ph.D degree are given intensive exposure to a specific field of engineering research as well as continued study of a broad range of engineering fundamentals. The main focus is individual research and students are expected to expand the frontiers of knowledge in their area of endeavour. Moreover, candidates learn, absorb and otherwise experience the general philosophy, methods and concepts of research and scholarly inquiry so that they can successfully approach significant problems that may or may not be related to their doctoral research.
For the Doctoral Programme, Ph.D students are required to register and successfully complete a minimum number of courses as per the Ph.D rules of the School. The doctoral degree is conferred in recognition of marked ability and scholarship in a chosen field of knowledge. There is no general course or credit requirement for the doctorate. A part of the work consists of regularly scheduled graduate courses of instruction in the chosen field and in related subject areas outside the department called cognate subjects. In most areas, a student must pass a comprehensive examination in a major field of specialization and be recommended for candidacy for the doctorate. In addition, the student must pursue independent investigation in a subdivision of the selected field and must present the results of the investigation in the form of a dissertation. A special doctoral committee is appointed for each applicant to supervise the work of the student for both selection of courses and preparation of the dissertation. Candidacy is achieved when the student demonstrates competence in his/her broad field of knowledge through completion of a prescribed set of courses and passing a comprehensive exam. Requirements regarding foreign language and non-technical courses are left to individual departments or programmes. A prospective doctoral student should consult the program advisor for specific details.

Laboratories
Empirical experiences are prerequisites for scientific and engineering education. The School has created a number of sector relevant engineering laboratories which are well equipped to facilitate the pedagogic and research process. The practical classes are well integrated into the curriculum, but the school encourages even more extensive use of these facilities to nurture a research led environment. The labs are being continuously upgraded with new equipment, to strengthen the research work of the M.Tech and Ph.D students who rely extensively on experiments to validate their work.

SOCIETY OF PETROLEUM ENGINEERS
The history of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) began well before its actual establishment. SPE is a non-profit professional association whose members are engaged in energy resources development and production. SPE serves 88,000-plus members in 118 countries worldwide. SPE is a key resource for technical knowledge related to the oil and gas exploration and production industry and provides services through its publications, conferences, workshops, forums and website. SPE membership includes engineers, scientists, technicians, managers, operators, educators and other professionals who work in the global upstream oil and gas industry, as well as students who are studying petroleum engineering or a related field. SPE membership has grown 46 percent in the last five years.
SOCIETY OF PETROPHYSICISTS AND WELL LOG ANALYSTS

Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA) is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to the advancement of the science of petrophysics and formation evaluation, through well logging and other formation evaluation techniques and to the application of these techniques to the exploitation of oil, gas and other minerals. Founded in 1959, SPWLA provides information services to scientists in the petroleum and mineral industries, serves as a voice of shared interests and plays a major role in strengthening of the role petrophysics has in the Oil and Gas Industry and the scientific community.
PETROTECH SOCIETY
Petrotech Society is a non-profit organization registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860. It was founded by distinguished members representing the entire spectrum of the hydrocarbon industry. The main objectives of the Petrotech Society are to provide a forum for National and International experts in the oil and gas industry to exchange views and share their knowledge, expertise and experiences and to identify and explore new areas for cooperation and technology transfer relating to the petroleum industry. It also aims at meeting challenges of energy requirements and maximise hydrocarbon resources for the energy sector and to develop trained, experienced and motivated manpower for dynamic growth and exploration of oil and gas and its further processing into downstream areas.
SOCIETY OF EXPLORATION GEOPHYSICISTS

Society of Exploration Geophysicists is a non-profit prganisation that promotes the science of applied geophysics and the education of geophysicists. SEG, founded in 1930, fosters the expert and ethical practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of natural resources, in characterizing the near surface and in mitigating earth hazards. The Society, which has more than 35,000 members in 138 countries, fulfills its mission through its publication, conferences, forums, websites and educational opportunities.

LET'S EXPRESS - A Students' Forum for Debate Competitions
Students of Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University arrange an inhouse debate competition annually through its students' forum 'Let's Express'. The idea is to provide students with a platform to freely express their ideas, show their intellect and sharpen their reasoning skills. At regular intervals, the forum holds debates on the topics of national and international interest.
Events
FLARE
FLARE, the first techno-cultural festival of PDPU was held on PDPU Campus in March 2010. Various events of FLARE unfolded an aura of excitement and universal elation gripped the students driving them to a frenzy to unlock their full potential and perform to the greatest extent of their abilities. Cultural events included celebrity night, rockshows, dance, music, fashion shows and lots more. Technical events included a whole gamut of events like paper presentations, website designing, technical quizzes LAN Gaming etc. FLARE created an atmosphere of excitement and buzz. With more than 20 participating colleges and an audience of approximately 5000 students, it was a time when everybody including the professors, students and all the members associated with the PDPU family teamed up for Flare which made the gala event a grand success.
ESTRADE Football League (EFL)

The longest ever sporting event (lasting for more than 50 days) involving maximum student participation in any extra curricular event is organised by the school, right after the mid-semester exams of the autumn semester every year. ESTRADE (the innovation board) organised the football league which comprised of 4 teams, with each of them giving whole-hearted performances throughout the league. This event is held every year at the PDPU Campus.
SPARKLE - Teacher's Day Celebration

Every year the school celebrates Teacher's Day by felicitating the faculty members and using the occasion to conduct some exciting events such as painting and rangoli competition, one act plays and a musical evening staged by students.
WELDING CONFERENCE
A one day workshop on New Developments in Advance Welding Processes was organized on 2nd January, 2010. The main focus of the workshop was new development infusion and solid state welding processes. The participants in the workshop were 17 scientists and engineers from Institute of Technology & Engineering and Nirma University. The workshop was also visited by industry experts from Ultratech and ONGC.
POETRY RECITATION COMPETITION

In order to encourage and motivate the creativity of students of technology, an in-house poetry recitation competition is arranged in School of Petroleum Technology every year. Participants recite selfcomposed poems and also those composed by well-known poets in English and Hindi.
PDPU Volleyball League (PVL)

This intra-university Volleyball League started in the year 2008 and since then it is held every year. Six teams play with each other over three days. This year Team SIERRA VOLLEYS beat Team ARMADA SPIKERS to become the PVL champions.

WELLNESS CENTRE
A nutritious diet and a good workout helps students to combat academic stress. School of Petroleum Technology has set up a stateof-the-art wellness centre equipped with cardio & weight training equipment and helps students workout under the expert supervision of a certified trainer. The wellness centre can look after the needs of more than 50 students per session and is functional throughout the day. As a part of its wellness initiative, the university also provides an expansive playground for outdoor games, such as football, cricket and practice courts for basketball, volleyball and badminton.
LIBRARY
Library and Information Centre is the heart of the school and aims to provide an ideal ambience for both creation & dissemination of knowledge, information, insights & intellect in all its academic programmes. The centre has utilized Information Technology extensively to ensure that resources are accessible from anywhere at anytime. The Library holds a collection of printed as well as electronic resources which include books, journals, databases, CDs/DVDs, ejournals, reports, case studies, conference proceedings, training manuals, etc
CAFETERIA & FOOD COURT

School of Petroleum Technology has ensured that the students enjoy a healthy diet charted out by a dietitian which is wholesome and nutritious. The food court also provides refreshments throughout the day. The cafeteria is attractively laid out and offers students an eco-friendly environment to relax while deliberating on their academic and personal lives and collectively address the attendant challenges.
HOSTEL FACILITY
Our in-campus residential facilities offer furnished hostel rooms on a twin occupancy basis. This is an optional facility offered to B.Tech students. Separate hostels are provided for female students. There are seven fully functional hostel blocks which are Wi-Fi enabled and are well-designed to meet the needs of the students. These include emergency medical facilities, a doctor on call, 24x7 access to computer labs and a well equipped and comfortable lounge to facilitate group activities.

Placement Procedure
The first batch of 232 B.Tech Petroleum Engineers along with 12 M.Tech Petroleum Engineers at SPT, PDPU will be graduating in May 2011. The procedure for placement is; 1. The Training and Placement Cell (T & P Cell) will send invitations to companies along with relevant information and Job Announcement Form (JAF). 2. Company will reply to T & P Cell about their interest along with duly filled up JAF (hard copy or online). 3. Details of JAF shall be shared along with other necessary information with all concerned students. 4. If the company wishes to conduct Pre-Placement Talk (PPT), they can send a request along with preferred dates. 5. Interested students shall show their willingness to appear for the recruitment process of company by signing for JAF online. 6. T & P Cell will allot dates for campus interview in consultation with the company. 7. Company will be given unique ID and password by T & P Cell for viewing online profiles of students. 8. Company can view the resumes of interested students online and shortlist them on the online account. 9. Company will visit the campus on the allotted date(s) and conduct the test/interview/group discussion as per their recruitment policies. 10. The company is required to furnish the final list of students on the date of interview. *The JAF provides the primary information to communicate the details of the positions offered to the candidates. It is therefore, highly desirable that the form is completed in all respects and it would be advantageous if it were accompanied by relevant company literature with more details about the company.

Training and Placement Cell
The Training and Placement Cell (T & P Cell) handles all internships, training and placements for graduate and post-graduate students at School of Petroleum Technology (SPT). The T & P Cell office is well equipped to support all placement procedures including Pre-Placement Talk, interviews and group discussions. Facilities are available at T & P Cell; 1. Auditorium and lecture theaters for PPT 2. Well equipped discussion rooms for interviews and group discussions. 3. IT support for placement activities. The placement policies and other related activities are handled by Professor-In-Charge, Training & Placement and Manager-Training & Placement along with Students Placement Committee. The process of coordination with recruiters is handled by the T & P Cell. The companies are encouraged to communicate to Manager-Training & Placement for initial discussion and subsequent communication for placement procedures.
