During the process of this paper, I found the most difficult thing was to look for reliable sources. Writing everything down was easy as it is, it was just putting into the correct way and tone for my intended audience. I chose to be more sophisticated with my tone since my audience was a more educated audience. Those that wants to be educated in the science field. Also organization was another factor. I wanted the information to flow as smoothly as possible. I believe I did it well so far. I will forward to more improvements and continue to improve until this project is due.

chemicals compounds, with 9tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) being the major psychoactive chemical compound; the compound that affects the mind or mental process, in other words regarding cannabis, being high. Prevalence of Cannabis

Chemical Effects of Cannabis to the Human Body

With the rise of cannabis use in the What is Cannabis? Cannabis, also called as Marijuana, is an illegal drug in most countries, where it is illegal to use, possess or grow. Most countries make it illegal; some use it for medical use, for example: Belgium, the Netherlands, Israel, and 16 states in the US. The drug contains for than 400 different recent years in the United States, there is a growing concern of the harmful effects of the drug. Such as the acute side effects of Cannabis or the effects of chronic use. The acute side effects are caused by cannabis which is related to the psyche and cognition. For example, acute side effects can happen to those who take a dose that exceeds their own bodys limit, causing the user to have

anxiety, impairment of memory and changes in sensory perceptions. For the chronic effects, the main issue with that is the user may induce psychosis (a severe mental disorder) and dependency of the

drug(W.Hall). General Physical Effects on the Body Most of the effects of cannabis are caused by the chemical compound THC. It produces reversible tachycardia with the increase of cardiac labor and the demand of oxygen, and also the increase of blood pressure with the decrease in Other effects that THC offers are the effect on salivary glands and pupils and muscles. For the salivary glands, hypo salivation and dry mouth can happen. For the pupils, the reaction to light is slowed and tear flow is also decreased. With both of these effects in the mouth and eyes, there can be a potential increase in risk for infections in eye and respiratory tract. As for muscles, they are in a relaxed state, which causes the reduction in strength and impaired coordination. This could lead into possible falls or stumbling while walking.

parasympathetic (deals with the nervous system) tone(F. Grotenhermen). For those who are chronic users, THC can lead to bradycardia, which is the slowness of the heart rate, usually fewer than 60 beats per minute(F.Grotenhermen). At higher dosage, dilation of the blood vessels can increase, causing dizziness and reddening.

tolerance, the effects of cannabis are dosedependent (W.Hall). Accidents Involving Cannabis The chemical THC, which is in cannabis, can impair vision, psychomotor performance, and the cognitive functions. In other words, the user is in a relax state with their ability to do simple things are Tolerance The human body can develop tolerance to the effect of cannabis. In a study, Jones and Benowitz administer daily doses of 210 mg of oral dronabinol (synthesized THC) to 120 volunteers for 1120 days. The volunteers did indeed develop a tolerance to the impairments and the psychological high by the end of the study. But then again, this was a controlled dosage of THC. The effects are related to the psyche of the body, so if the dosage was larger than what the body can handle, the user will show signs of symptoms. With decreased. If the user is driving, this can greatly increase the risk of causing a traffic accident. After alcohol, cannabis is most frequently found in impaired drivers and drivers that are involved in accidents. Then again, cannabis effects depend on dose, psyche, and tolerance ranging from not much effect to a strong effect. Studies estimate that acute cannabis uses can double the risk of causing an accident (R.K. Jones), while regular users, with higher tolerance, who are acutely intoxicated, seem to have no increased risks (F.Grotenhurman).Another study found that regular cannabis users

showed lower scores of dizziness and increased cognitive abilities, more than those who are not regular users (F. Grotenhermen). Depression Cannabis and THC may cause anxiety and depression but it also help with these symptoms. Cannabis is often used to relieve psychological problems and those who suffer diseases dealing with the body. For depression, clinical studies observed that cannabis had an antidepressive effect (J.E. Beal). The antidepressive effect comes from the substance in the brain called, Anandamide. This reacts with the THC to cause a relaxation state, but then there are also the negative effects of this. While cannabis seems to be good for depression, it can also be bad. Since the more a person smokes cannabis, there is an increase of risk for developing depression. To reiterate, cannabis is mainly dosedependent.

Young Cannabis Smokers This topic should already be inferred, but the use of cannabis by young people may have a negative effect on their body, such as mental health, since the body has not fully developed yet. In a study called Dunedin study, a long-term study in New Zealand between cannabis and mental health problems was being observed, to see if it causes mental health (R. McGee). This was a study about the use of cannabis by young people. It was concluded that people at the age of 18 had a higher risk of mental illness than those who are at the age of 21. Also the use of the drug and mental illness was linked to the persons socioeconomic status, and behavior problems. Problems for Chronic Users Even though heavy chronic users may have high tolerance for the effects of the drug, they still have problems. Depending on the intensity and duration of

use, they can still show impairments of memory, attention, and ability to organize complex information. The possible explanations of these effects are influence by the chemical of cannabis. It causes cerebrovascular resistance, making blood flow difficult from one area to another in the body. Other Organ Systems Long term effects of smoking

In a three-week clinical study, HIV positive adults smoked cannabis and THC showed no beneficiary results were shown. Cardiac arrest is another risk from smoking cannabis due to the effect on blood pressure and heart frequency. That means that there is an abnormal blood circulation due to the failure of the heart to contract correctly.

cannabis can also have a negative health effect on other systems in body, such as the immune system and circulation system. The THC causes a certain cells in the body to not

correctly develop, like Th1 and Th2 cells. These are a type of white blood cells that maximizes and establish the capabilities of

the immune system. The THC in the drug THC acting on the hypothalamic-pituitary also cause a lot of decreases in cells and adrenal axis, a large number of endocrine chemicals that the body needs, but cannabis processes were caused by the drug, as a also help with inflammatory diseases such as Crohns disease but it has a negative effect on other diseases such as AIDs and cancer.

result, affecting sexual and other hormones as well as glucose metabolism (L. Murphy).

Paul Nguyen 6

The changes in human hormones levels were due to the effects of acute cannabis or THC ingestion, but those effects were very minor (L.E. Hollister). Tolerance can be built to these effects, but there was a study on male fertility. After several weeks of smoking 810 cannabis cigarettes, a slight decrease in sperm count was observed (Peggy Van, Der Pol). Pregnancy and Fetal Development The endocannabinoid system plays a significant role during pregnancy for a woman. The endocannabinoid system is referred to as a group of neuromodulatory lipids and their receptors that are involved in a variety of physiological processes such as, appetite, pain-sensation, mood and memory. So what does it have to do with pregnancy? A successful pregnancy implantation and progression seems to require a low level of anandamide (Neurotransmitter found in the brain of mammals). But those levels of anandamide drastically increased during
6

labor in cannabis users. For example, a study found that a shorter gestation (duration of carrying the womb) of one week in pregnant woman who used cannabis 6 or more times per week. These levels of anandamide and cannabis use disturb normal development of embryos, which can cause poor pregnancy outcomes. Others studies concluded that, the endogenous cannabinoid system plays a primary role in the development of memory and oral skills of newborns. Some researchers theorize that a disturbed endocannabinoid system may be the reason for the developments of certain abnormalities in newborns of cannabis users. Particularly this syndrome called, failure to strive syndrome, a condition in which the newborn cannot properly grow or gain weight. Cancer and Cannabis Can cannabis cause cancer? Biopsies from cannabis smokes have shown a higher rate of precancerous pathological changes

Paul Nguyen 7

compared to non-smokers. This suggests that there is an increased cancer risk of the respiratory tract and other cancer. But, the data is still indeterminate. Some studies showed no clear association between cannabis use and cancer. The researchers noted that there is not enough information to thoroughly study this case. The largest study so far is with 1212 cancer cases and 1040 cancer free cases found no positive association between cannabis and cancer types (such as lung cancer). Until better data is available cannabis should still not be used, just so you dont risk getting anything. Dont do Cannabis Now that cannabis is established as another social drug, the increase of Cannabis use is a harmful threat to individuals, such as young people, or even a large society. The risks that are associated with cannabis depend on several factors, as you can see from reading above. Young age, heavy users, also regular users are all factors of
7

potentially increasing the negative effects of cannabis. The chemicals of cannabis, such as THC, cause the biggest negative effects from this drug. The user can possibly get addict and become a chronic user and suffer the negative effects of cognition and induction of psychosis.Another risk is developing depression from smoking too much cannabis. Even though it has an antidepressive effect, smoking too much of it will increase the risk for developing depression. So those who smoke it for medical reason, smoke only a low to medium dosage. Even though, there is no clear association with cancer and cannabis, it should still not be smoked. The other negative effects that were listed could happen. Finally, the greatest concern is to protect those who are uneducated of the effects, and minimizing cannabis use as much as possible, while it is also an illegal drug, it is a drug that can harm the human body significantly.

Paul, I like the way you have formatted your paper, making it look like a journal or magazine article. It feels like you address your intended audience appropriately. As you continue to revise this paper, the two big thing I want you to focus on in you revision are 1) overall sentence-level clarity. You have the big pieces worked out, for the most part, in terms of organization and purpose. You lose some writerly credibility when you are less specific or exact as you need to be with your sentences. 2) The next big thing is looking carefully at how you are using and citing your sources. You need to review the Purdue OWL pages about using MLA documentation. Some places need a source, some sound like they are direct quotes, you cite some sources that are not listed on your works cited page. All of this needs attention. After you have looked at Purdue OWL, if you still have questions about this work, please make an appointment with me and we can talk through it.
