Engineering design

Design Report:100 points

Design Evaluation:100 points

Design Report
The design report should clearly explain the engineering and design process The process for each system could include: 1> Objectives 2> Customer requirements 3> Alternatives considered 4>The result of design calculations 5>Stress Analysis 6>Testing Design reports must follow the format for SAE Technical Papers

Format and deadline

The design report file must be named as follows: Car #_college name Page Limit: cover page+10+4(Photos,graphics etc;no information) Submission after due date leads to deduction of 10 pts everyday

Design Evaluation
Design Evaluation will be conducted at the event site on the first full day of the competition. Design Category Originality and innovation Suspension and brake system Power train Structural design Craftsmanship Operator Comfort Feasibility for mass production Serviceability Points 25 15 10 10 10 10 10 10

Expectations
During design evaluation team members are expected to be able to fully explain and discuss all aspects of their vehicles design and the rationale behind their design decisions. Teams that are refused judging because of incompleteness will receive zero points for Design Evaluation

Recommendations
Focus on innovation and originality but only at maximum 2 areas, Stick to basics otherwise Keep in mind that simplicity in maintenance and better functional ability will fetch you better points Only do things that have convinced you While short listing the alternatives for a particular system make a matrix to rate each alternate on manufacturability, weight, driver safety, cost, serviceability and ride Put the same in the design report and keep it ready at time of evaluation At the time of evaluation, make a note of specifications of each system and display it at concerned locations

TOTAL

50 Points

Production cost
The production cost is the actual calculation of points given to each team based on the teams cost compared to the cost of other teams.

Your production cost score will be calculated as follows: Score = 40 x [(Max Cost Your Cost)/(Max Cost Lowest Cost)]

Cost report
3 sections + cover page Section 1: Overview; Justifications It is optional. max 4 pages Section 2: Cost sheets Section 3: Bills, invoices, proofs

Section 1: Costing Sheets

Sheet A (Suspension)

Sheet B(A-Arms, Suspension)

Section 3
This includes original bills, invoices, proofs of cost or any other documentation supporting the purchase of all the components.

Format & deadlines

The cost report must be submitted electronically in two different documents: 1.) The Microsoft Excel format, using the supplied template posted on the Mini Baja important documents page 2.) A PDF file with all of the pictures, receipts, and any other supporting documentation. The cost report file must be named as follows: Cost # 141_ DCoE Cost reports arriving after the deadline will be penalized ten (10) points per day up to a maximum of one hundred (100)points.

Also, note that the maximum penalty for late or non-submission exceeds the total number of points for the event.

Recommendations
From day 1, start putting the required data in the cost sheets Buy bills on retail price i.e. do not include tax in the bills Take quotations of the alternate components also Read the rule book very thoroughly & positively exploit the rules. E.g.. Roll cage pipes Initially make a tentative budget by conducting market tests and try to adhere to the same Learn and perform manufacturing processes so that you can state the cost of manufacturing as per unskilled labor Buy in small bill amounts so that you have to attach minimum bills in the report

Presentation: 50 points
Objective The objective of the Presentation is for the team to convince the executives of a hypothetical manufacturing company to purchase your teams BAJA vehicle design and put it into production at the rate of 4000 units per year. For the purposes of the presentation you may assume that the judges are a mixed group of corporate executives who may have experience in marketing, production, and finance as well as engineering.

Scoring
content of the presentation organization of the presentation effectiveness of the visual Aids speakers delivery teams responses to the judges questions

Time Limits
Presentation: 10 Min; Max 2 team members Q/A Round: 5 Min, only judges can ask questions; Any team member can answer

Recommendations
Effective start that attracts attention Explain demand of ATVs in other parts of world Justify feasibility of manufacturing it in India Put forward the advantages and your strategies to consume the product Conclude by a proposal requesting the hypothetical company to fix an appointment to have further discussion Keep in mind-It is marketing presentation and not technical Presentation

Added advantage
The team with max points from the first two days gets the pole position on the 3rd day, so scoring maximum from static events gives you an opportunity to capitalize on the Endurance event which carries heavy 400 points.

Additional added advantages

Competing for the static events brings out ones ability to work in the team and reflects efforts put in by captain It is the only competition where a team has to perform and not an individual You will be at comfort level in a cross functional organisation Will learn to accept and share and convince Will inbuilt innovative approach as you will have to explore creative alternates before coming to any conclusion. You got enough time guys; Capitalise

Professional learning
Project management P-D-C-A Economical impact analysis Value engineering Manufacturing sequencing Self ownership Time management Goes on & on..

Its not just an event! It will change the way you look at things!
