Anderson, Keith J. "Internet Use Among College Students: An Exploratory Study." Journal Of American College Health 50.1 (2001): 21. MasterFILE Complete. Web. 24 Feb. 2012. This Academic source talks about a recent study done on college students across the country and about how their lives are affected by excessive Internet use. This research done in this article was influenced from an independent case study that involved a college student who was addicted to an online community called MUD. The participant spent so much time on this website that his grades had decreased significantly, he social life offline was practically non-existent, and he was showing symptoms of depression. The participant in the case study had become so dependent on MUD that he would stay logged into the online community for an exorbitant amount of time. The study that involved surveying a large amount of college students across the country required that students include the amount of time that was spent online if it was not related to classwork, homework, or classroom activities. The survey had questions that would investigate how much time college students spent online and whether or not Internet usage realty affected social, academic, and or lifestyle difficulties. The study concluded that the average time spent online by college students was 100 minutes compared the time spent online by all internet users which averaged a total of 15 minutes. Of the 1,078 Internet users in the survey, 9.8% of them displayed Internet dependence, averaging about 229 minutes a day online. The

Toure 3 results found that students who used the Internet excessively were more likely to state that Internet use negatively affected their academic work their social life, and their sleeping pattern. The author of this academic journal has his Ph.D. in Psychology and conducted the research. The Journal of American College Health published the source in in July 2001. This article seems objective because the research was based on generating questions for further research. The quality of this source is very helpful because not only does it give me information about internet usage surrounding college students, it further breaks down the information by separating the data and comparing internet usage based on college majors. The purpose of this research was to generate new questions that would prompt more research on the effects of Internet usage and college students academically and socially. The audience intended for this article includes other psychologists, psychology majors, and parents inquiring about the effects of excessive Internet usage. This source was helpful to me because it highlighted just how bad excessive internet use could be to a student and how students could become internet dependent and essentially have their grades and social lives affected. I can use this source to show some negative effects of Internet usage and I can use the case study at the beginning of the summary to provide a specific example of how bad Internet dependence can get. This source will be used in my project because it gives me an objective research that found negative effects of the excessive use of the Internet.

Toure 4 Cary, Justin. Re: A Couple of Questions. Message sent to the author. 28 Feb. 2012. E-mail.

This source is an E-mail conversation that I had with an English professor on the campus of University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The professors name is Justin Cary and uses Facebook to a majority of communication with his students. Professor Cary explains why he decided to use Facebook instead of the school run website Moodle to communicate his students and he stated that he wanted to stay connected to his students and he felt as though Moodle did not have all of the tools for him to do that. He believes that Facebook makes it easier for his students to write and for them to communicate with him as well as with each other. The class uses Facebook for everything that they do such as major assignment such as daily classroom assignments, and writing exercises. Students upload their homework and projects onto Facebook. Professor Cary talks about how the outcome of using Facebook was a lot more helpful and successful than he originally thought it would be. Professor Cary also proclaims that social media ties greatly into the academic student life as well as the social life and that students and professors would connect better and grades would increase if professors began to use social media. Professor Cary has been teaching at UNC Charlotte since 2010. He teaches English 1102, and he has been teaching for 3 years. I believe the credibility of his work because Professor Malcolm suggested him as a great source and a person to interview. This source is a very good one because Professor Cary goes into great detail about using Facebook has been much easier on him and his students. He answered all of my questions with more

Toure 5 than enough detail and information and he was very helpful. The information is reliable because it is based on his own accounts of using Facebook with his students and because he is a professor. This source is different from my other sources because I spoke with professor Cary myself and all of the questions that I had were answered. The audience of this information is targeted for people who are curious about how social media can be used between professors and students in a positive way. I can use this source in my paper because I have already interviewed a reliable source for information about social media use with students and professors. I can use this to argue that the use of social media is not as detrimental as some people make it.

DAVIS, KATIE. "A Life In Bits And Bytes: A Portrait Of A College Student And Her Life With Digital Media." Teachers College Record 113.9 (2011): 1960-1982. Education Research Complete. Web. 20 Feb. 2012. This source explains how social media has its positive effects as well as its negative effects on todays college student. This source is an academic journal on a case study of how an emerging adult tied in the social media with her everyday life. The research took place over the course of a year. The participant was interviewed twice in the summer of 2007; all interview sessions were an hour long, and three times in the fall of 2008. The journal goes into depth about how Anna, the participant, managed her college life with such great involvement in social media. Anna discusses how she uses social media to keep up with her social life and also how she also depends on the Internet to balance out her classes and keep up with assignments. Anna brings up the fact that sometimes the Internet

Toure 6 can take away from her productivity. She plan out some time where shell dedicate a specific amount of time to get homework done but instead shell end spending more time on the internet doing things that are not related to her studies than the actual assignment that she is supposed to be doing. This results in her having to spend more time doing homework and which will essentially result in her losing an hour of sleep that night and have to make up for it by cutting down on time that she would have spent hanging out with friends. The authors credentials on this source are objective. She lists the ideals that Anna considers positive outcomes of using social media, but then again, she does not hesitate to explain the negative outcomes of spending a lot of time on the Internet. Since this journal is based on a case study, the results in this article are based off of one persons experience with social media. The source was very descriptive and includes a lot of information on the topic. The information is reliable because it is an academic journal that was found using the Atkins Library Database. Since the article is based on the effects that digital media has on college students, the intended audience would be people interested in the psychological effects of digital media. More research will have to be done in order to get a better scope of how digital media is affecting most college students. This source is very helpful because it gives me more information about my topic of interest, it involves great detail and it gives me a real insight on how social media really affects another person aside from myself. Reading this source made me realize that Anna had some similarities in how digital media affects my time. I can use this source to highlight some positive and negative affects of digital media on college students.

Martin, J. Amy. Beyond Social Networking: Using Facebook to Promote Student Engagement, Study Skills, and Critical Thinking . American Psychological Association. n.d. Web. 28 Feb. 2012.

This source is from the American Psychological Association database. The source is an essay on the results of a professor who decided to implement Facebook with her Psychology classes. She came up with a fake TA (teaching assistant) named Cliff and she explained to her classes that Cliff would be the first person to post up-to-date information on this Facebook page. Cliff would post study tips online and answer any last minute questions as well as provide reminders to class assignments and exams. The source goes into detail about how all of the students interacted with Cliff and about what they did or did not like about Cliff. The professor found that although Cliff was posting up study tips and classroom reminders, all of that information could be found on the syllabus. With Cliff posting these tips, the professor received fewer questions about assignments. The professor stresses that its beneficial to find a common ground with todays students and most of todays students are involved with social media. Professor Amy Martin has her Ph.D. in psychology, and she teaches Intro to Psychology as well as higher-level Psychology courses. This experiment with Cliff involved 8 Introduction to Psychology sections that she taught and the feedback that she received at the end of the year came out to a majority of positive feedback on Cliff. This article is based on a point of view position and the author thinks that

Toure 8 more professors should incorporate the use of social media in their classrooms. This source included tables and charts, which gives more credibility for what the result of the experiment was. She also incudes that anyone is open to befriend Cliff on Facebook. She includes her email and school address for anyone to contact her. This source is credible to me because it includes research on how professors and students can come together using social media and find common ground. This source was published by the American Psychological Association and was intended for professors who wanted to implement Facebook with their students and how they could set that up. This source will be used in my paper because it provides experience of a teacher using social media to communicate more effectively with her students than she ever had before.

"RETHINKING HOW WE TEACH THE 'NET GENERATION'." National Public Radio 14 July 2011: NewsBank. Web. 28 Feb. 2012. This developed article, derived from NPR.org, discusses how Don Tapscott, whos studied the digital revolution, argues about how universities are behind when it comes to teaching todays generation of college students. In the article, Don presses about how the traditional lecture settings in a university classroom are starting to fall out of style. Don expresses that todays generation does a lot more multitasking than any other generation. Don states that its much better to try and reach students using more technology because this is something that our generation relies on heavily. This source gives me information from someone who believes that there should be more activity on the computer because students spend most of their time there. This article made me think about how I use my

Toure 9 laptop for pretty throughout my entire day and about how it would be more beneficial to myself and my professors if they found some type of way to connect with more students online. I will use this source to look up other sources that go into more detail about teaching the net generation. This source gives me good information and new insight, but it does not give me everything that I would be looking forward to finding about this topic Don Tapscott has done plenty of interviews for the Huffington Post, NPR News, and The New York Times. Hes published plenty of books and articles about the digital generation and about how the world is changing rapidly because of the pace at which technology is developing. This information is reliable because it comes from a wellknown author. This article is also objective because its informing the reader of the views of an author. This article is targeted for people who are interested in the changes that are taking place in todays society.
