3. What is Organizational culture?

The values and behaviors that contribute to the unique social and psychological environment of an organization. Organizational culture is the sum total of an organization's past and current assumptions, experiences, philosophy, and values that hold it together, and is expressed in its self-image, inner workings, interactions with the outside world, and future expectations. It is based on shared attitudes, beliefs, customs, express or implied contracts, and written and unwritten rules that the organization develops over time and that have worked well enough to be considered valid. Also called corporate culture, it manifests in the ways the organization conducts its business, treats its the extent to which autonomy and freedom is allowed in decision how power and information flow through its hierarchy, and employees, customers, and the wider community, making, developing new ideas, and personal expression,

objectives. It is termed strong or weak to the extent it is diffused through the organization. It affects the organization's productivity and performance, and provides guidelines on customer care and service; product quality and safety; attendance and punctuality; and concern for the environment. It extends also to production-methods, marketing and advertising practices, and to new product creation. While there are many common elements in the large organizations of any country, organizational culture is unique for every organization and one of the hardest things to change. 4. The importance of Organizational Culture: A common platform where individuals work in unison to earn profits as well as a livelihood for themselves is called an organization. A place where individuals realize the dream of making it big is called an organization. Every organization has its unique style of working which often contributes to its culture. The beliefs, ideologies, principles and values of an organization form its culture. The culture of the workplace controls the way employees behave amongst themselves as well as with people outside the organization.

The culture decides the way employees interact at their workplace.

A healthy culture encourages the employees to stay motivated and loyal towards the management.

The culture of the workplace also goes a long way in promoting

healthy competition at the workplace. Employees try their level best to perform better than their fellow workers and earn recognition and appreciation of the superiors. It is the culture of the workplace which actually motivates the employees to perform.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

Every organization must have set guidelines for the employees to work

accordingly. The culture of an organization represents certain predefined policies which guide the employees and give them a sense of direction at the workplace. Every individual is clear about his roles and responsibilities in the organization and know how to accomplish the tasks ahead of the deadlines.

No two organizations can have the same work culture. It is the culture of

an organization which makes it distinct from others. The work culture goes a long way in creating the brand image of the organization. The work culture gives an identity to the organization. In other words, an organization is known by its culture.

The organization culture brings all the employees on a common

platform. The employees must be treated equally and no one should feel neglected or left out at the workplace. It is essential for the employees to adjust well in the organization culture for them to deliver their level best.

The work culture unites the employees who are otherwise from

different back grounds, families and have varied attitudes and mentalities. The culture gives the employees a sense of unity at the workplace. Certain organizations follow a culture where all the employees irrespective of their designations have to step into the office on time. Such a culture encourages the employees to be punctual which eventually benefits them in the long run. It is the culture of the organization which makes the individuals a successful professional.

Every employee is clear with his roles and responsibilities and

strives hard to accomplish the tasks within the desired time frame as per the set guidelines. Implementation of policies is never a problem in

organizations where people follow a set culture. The new employees also try their level best to understand the work culture and make the organization a better place to work.

The work culture promotes healthy relationship amongst the

employees. No one treats work as a burden and moulds himself according to the culture.

It is the culture of the organization which extracts the best out of

each team member. In a culture where management is very particular about the reporting system, the employees however busy they are would send their reports by end of the day. No one has to force anyone to work. The culture develops a habit in the individuals which makes them successful at the workplace. 5. Googles Organizational culture Its really the people that make Google the kind of company it is. We hire people who are smart and determined, and we favor ability over experience. Although Googlers share common goals and visions for the company, we hail from all walks of life and speak dozens of languages, reflecting the global audience that we serve. And when not at work, Googlers pursue interests ranging from cycling to beekeeping, from frisbee to foxtrot. We strive to maintain the open culture often associated with startups, in which everyone is a hands-on contributor and feels comfortable sharing ideas and opinions. In our weekly all-hands (TGIF) meetingsnot to mention over email or in the cafeGooglers ask questions directly to Larry, Sergey and other execs about any number of company issues. Our offices and cafes are designed to encourage interactions between Googlers within and across teams, and to spark conversation about work as well as play.

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

Google has one of the most interesting organizational cultures. They are not only one of the fastest and most useful web search engines around; they are also one of the top 100 companies to work for according to Fortune (2007). Google strives for having the fastest, most reliable search engine on the web and in order to accomplish this; Google also has to hire employees that are the best in their technological field. The layers of organizational culture are very apparent within Google. According to Googles co-founder Larry Paige, We dont just want you to have a great job. We want you to have a great life. We provide you with everything you need to be productive and happy on and off the clock. This quotation is the culmination of Googles observable artifacts, espoused values and enacted values that are crucial to the success of Google as a multinational franchise. Observable artifacts are extremely important to the success of a company because they are tangible items that allow employees to become a part of the

companys organizational culture. The observable artifacts found at Googles various offices around the world explicitly tie into their organizational culture. Some of these observable artifacts include:

Every office on Googles campus is geographically named and decorated as the country they represent. Each office has pictures and specific cultural furniture tied with that specific geographical location Hundreds of bikes and scooters are placed around campus to make it easier to travel to and from different offices Very few solo offices were built so that Google can help promote entrepreneurial group thinking Laptops and internet access are found everywhere throughout the campus so employees can work in any sort of setting There are multiple cafes around campus that serve breakfast, lunch and dinner to employees There are multiple gyms, beach volleyball courts and heated pools that are all free for employees to use CI NY L CC YU T TRONG VN PHNG, CNG TY . why Google was named the 4th best company to work for in 2011. With that said, the observable artifacts help promote a strong organizational culture that makes Google more than just a place to work. Espoused values are also very important to a company because they are essentially the framework of how management wants their company to run. When it comes to Google, the company is extremely forthright when displaying their values. According to Googles blog, they believe that to act in

atmosphere, resulting in its distinction as a Flat company. The company does not boast a large middle management, and upper management is so hands on, its hard to qualify them in a separate category. Teams are made up of members with equal authority and a certain level of autonomy is maintained. "We're a highly collaborative culture," said Karen Godwin, the office's online sales and operations manager and a former Kodak executive. "There's no top-down hierarchy." Google rewards their employee's hard work with an extremely relaxed workplace that encourages creativity through fun activities such as roller hockey and through a casual dress code. Google also encourages their employees to take care of their minds and their bodies by offering them the ability to work out in the gym and get a massage inside the company building. "There is an emphasis on team achievements and pride in individual accomplishments that contribute to the company's overall success" (Google Corporate Information).

We really know that Google understands that their employee's have active lives outside of the workplace and they encourage their employees to bring those parts of their lives into the Google employee community. We also really like the fact that they build such loyalty from their employees that many of the employees see each other and the Google management as a family. Google values a commitment to their users in that they strive to give a higher level of service. We all believe in giving the best service available. It does not matter where you work, if you are dealing with people, you should give them the best experience possible. We want any person that we encounter, either in a work situation or on a personal level, to feel like they are important. We believe that Google embodies the team orientation primary characteristic of organizational culture. As stated earlier, Google encourages its employees to work and play together so that a family bond is formed. According to Google (2007), "Meetings that would take hours elsewhere are frequently little more than a conversation in line for lunch and few walls separate those who write code from those who write checks." This really does reinforce a team environment. Everyone is pretty much on the same level and everyone works together. The limited walls in the building help the employees to feel like a group rather than an outsider in another department. Google also boasts some unique cultural aspects:

Dogs, lava lamps, and massage chairs. Double rooms with three or four team members. Foozball, darts, assorted video games, pianos, ping pong tables, lap

pools, gyms that include yoga and dance classes.

PHN NY B VO SLIDE KHC ^^ Google's organizational culture is very strong. Google hires people that embody their company's values and feel the same intense desire for unlimited amounts of information. This desire allows the company's employees to work towards the same goals and intensifies the bond that they share. Google tends to have a low turn over rate and receives over 1,300 applications a day (Fortune, 2007). Google's culture is a combination of things. It is ethical, customerresponsive, and spiritual. Google encourages its employees to be creative in problem solving which sometimes calls for risk taking. These employees are allowed just enough freedom in their jobs that they do not take it for granted and this keeps them on ethical ground. The Google employees also have a

HRC GROUP

14 GOOGLE

ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE

sense of team instead of self so this encourages them to work together to achieve goals rather than compete against one another. This also prevents unethical behavior. Google's low formalization and service-oriented employees work to be customer-responsive. They are allowed the freedom to make decisions that benefit Google users. The employees strive to provide the best service available and to do this they must be able to relate to their users. They understand that "thinking outside of the box" is what they are known for so they go above and beyond what others would do to satisfy a customer need while maintaining company values. This "outside of the box" type of business also puts the company into a spiritual type of organization. Employees are rewarded for individual successes and for team accomplishments. They are also encouraged to have fun with their job. Google's ability to allow their employees to have fun while at work is motivating in itself. This motivation shows itself in the work as well. It is a give and take relationship; both sides get something out of it. Google has a unique way of conducting business that appeals too many. It is this sort of culture that creates individuals that have the desire and the motivation to stay with a company. 6.
