Introduction

The NTUM-200 is the culmination of a design process which is captured in the following chapters of this report. Over the course of the design process, the design team has endeavoured to incorporate current and future technologies into the design with the aim of providing the best and most cost-effective design. An overview of the activities in the design phases is shown in Figure 2.1. The areas of responsbilities for the members of the design team are as shown in Table 2.1.

Phase 1
1. Analysis of RFP and aircraft mission. 2. Aircraft sizing and preliminary weight estimation. 3. Review of FAR25 requirements. 4. Aerodynamics preliminary design. 5. Preliminary design of fuselage dimensions and layout. 6. Powerplant requirements estimation.

Phase 2
1. Constraint Analysis. 2. Review of aircraft sizing and component weight buildup. 3. Airframe material selection. 4. Aerodynamics, stability and control analysis. 5. Detailed fuselage design. 6. Range and payload trade-off analysis. 7. Powerplant requirements confirmation. 8. Landing gear system design.

Phase 3
1. Evaluation of flight performance. 2. Investigation of environmental impact and noise generation issues. 4. Auxiliary systems design (avionics, electric, hydraulic, life support, fuel delivery systems). 3. Life cycle cost evaluation.

Even within the boundaries of the RFP and FAR25 regulations, it was necessary to further establish design objectives to focus the design effort. The objectives were as follows: a) The design shall incorporate mainly mature technologies so as to control developmental cost estimates and minimize risk of failure. b) The focus shall be on fulfilling the requirements of the RFP, and design features shall support meeting the RFP. Effort shall be made to reduce excess design frills. c) The baseline design will ensure that the aircraft be operable and conforms to regulatory requirements. Additional enhancements will follow only after the baseline requirements have been met. d) Engineering calculations and assumptions shall be substantiated by sound engineering judgement and credible data sources. e) Design trade-offs shall be made only without compromise to the safety and operability of the aircraft. The following sections of this report will cover the key elements of the entire design process. The chapters of the report is structured according to specific design domains. In other words, the report does not segregate the deisgn phases as it is shown in Figure 2.1. Rather, within each chapter, effort was made to capture and chronicle the key design steps, decisions and outcomes.
