So who was the lucky Iron supporter
who caught the eye of our Amanda?
BY DAVID ELLIOTT
david.elliott@gsmg.co.uk
A football supporters search
for love has become the talk of
Iron fans after an appeal in the
Scunthorpe Telegraph.
The woman, who only wants
to be knownas Amanda, placed
an advert on the front page of
the newspaper after meeting
the mystery man following
Scunthorpe Uniteds fixture at
Huddersfield Town.
She asked for the man, who
was with his fireman friend
in the West Yorkshire towns
Revolution bar after the game,
to get in touch.
As the Telegraph went to
press, Amanda was still wait-
ing for her dream man to con-
tact her.
But her search has proved a
big talking point among United
supporters.
Graham Godson, chairman
of the Scunthorpe United Of-
ficial Supporters Club, said he
had known people meet old
friends at away games before.
But he was unaware of any-
one meeting their partner by
chance at a match.
He said: We have seenpeople
meet by coincidence at away
games before, people who
havent seen each other for
years or were at school or col-
lege together.
At away trips, you do come
across people you havent seen
for 25 years.
Mr Godson said he was also
unaware of anybody using
their local newspaper in a bid
to find love after a football-re-
lated encounter.
He said: I dont think I have
seen this before, but it has
probably happened some-
where.
The only problem will be if
the man is married with a
couple of kids.
Doug Parker, treasurer of the
Winterton Iron supporters
group, said he was amazed
to see the advert.

Who is Amanda? Is she

pregnant? We need to
know!
Peter Sands
He said: We were talking in
the pub about the possible cir-
cumstances of why anyone
would have left that message.
It was very unusual, but I
have no idea who the man
might be.
We had a bus to the game
with the Winterton Iron but
we all came home straight af-
terwards, so it wasnt any of
our crew.
We were talking about it at
the game against
Bournemouth on Saturday
and it is unbelievable.
Steve King, chairman of the
Huddersfield Town Support-
ers Association, said: The
clubhadone personpropose to
somebody on the field before a
game on Valentines Day once
but I have never, ever seen
anything like this.
Obviously, we live very
sheltered lives in Hudder-
sfield.
Amandas determination to
Telegraph supplement
The wait is almost over for this
years Baby and Toddler of the
Year supplement.
Parents and guardians took
their children to a studio in
Scunthorpe HighStreet tohave
their photo taken.
And now those pictures have
been put together and will ap-
pear in the Scunthorpe Tele-
graph on May 10, when voting
also begins.
The top 20 from each age cat-
egory will then be judged by an
expert panel to find an overall
winner of this years compet-
ition.
The winner of each category
will be awarded 200, with
the overall winner receiving
800.
The winner will also be given
a trophy and named the
Scunthorpe Telegraphs
baby or toddler of the year for
2011.

ters and information signs at a

tion.

ers were used to tag the name

Others have found their love match
Love and football have
gone hand-in-hand in
North Lincolnshire before,
as United fan Paul White
proposed to his girlfriend
Paula Davidson at a
Scunthorpe United match.
Mr White popped the
question at half-time in the
Irons clash with Bury on
Boxing Day last year and
the couple plan to marry
in July 2014.
Paul organised the
surprise proposal, where
the words marry me
princess, scrolled along
the scoreboard screen
during the interval.
Paul, 36, of Waddington,
said: It was all to do with
the atmosphere.
Paula wanted me to do
something that would be a
complete surprise and
something she would
find her man has caused a buzz
online, with people from Ab-
erdeen to Stoke-on-Trent tak-
ing to social networking site
Twitter to have their say.
And the advert led senior fig-
ures in the newspaper in-
dustryto comment onher front
page quest for love.
David Higgerson, head of
multimedia for Trinity Mirror
Regionals, wrote on his blog:
As determined efforts to fol-
low up a chance encounter go,
its right up there with hiring a
plane and flying a message
over Scunthorpes ground at
their next home game.
Peter Sands, a former news-
paper editor who has re-de-
signed 80 newspapers and
magazines, added: Who is
Amanda? Is she pregnant? We
need to know!
One thing is certain about
her though she knows how
effective advertising in your
local paper can be. Good for
her.
remember.
There are quite a lot of
young people that meet
each other at the football.
We will be getting a VIP
box again during the
Christmas period, so we
can watch games.
