Labour Town Hall Bosses pour millions into Park Hill project while cutting local residents services

LET DOWN BY COUNCIL BOSSES

Local residents have reacted with dismay at Labour Town Hall Bosses decision to take an axe to three important local services. Labours inexplicable decision to pour millions of pounds into the private Park Hill flats project in the city centre means big service cuts for people in Hallam. Our parks - a source of pride to many local people - are set for heavy cuts. The popular garden-waste collection service is to be axed altogether. Weekly bin collections are to be ended and replaced with a scheme that will mean less recycling and run the risk of more rubbish being left on the streets. Local Lib Dem campaigners are fighting to save these three important services. Lib Dem Fulwood Ward campaigner Sue Alston said, These cuts to local services could easily be avoided if Labour Town Hall Bosses stopped wasting money on vanity projects like the Park Hill development. Its been revealed that Labour bosses turned down an offer of money from the government to keep weekly bin collections going. Ms Alston said, We need to make Labours Town Hall Bosses listen. I urge people to sign the petition calling on Labour to cut waste, not local services.

HERALD COMMENT
Delivering for us in tough times
The news can be pretty bleak at times, but, amid all the chaos, there are some bright signs for Sheffield. Our citys schools are getting a massive cash boost from Nick Cleggs Pupil Premium thanks to the Lib Dems in government. There is a massive investment in Sheffield jobs and a bold new scheme to get young people working. Sheffield pensioners are also set to get a record pension increase this April. Our local MP Nick Clegg has taken a lot of stick in the past two years. He deserves real credit for sticking to the task and delivering for our city.

Cleggs job boost for Sheffield

Making Sheffield a super city
Local MP and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced plans to make Sheffield an economic powerhouse for Britain. Sheffield is one of eight cities to get special Core-City status - and access to a pot of money - to boost jobs in advanced industries. Sheffield will get more freedom over business development, transport, and housing. A special fund will improve local infrastructure like internet, roads, and trams. The government has already announced 10 million for superfast broadband.

Lib Dems guarantee work for young people

The Lib Dems have also secured a 1bn fund to get young people earning or learning. From April, every 18-24 year old in Britain will be guaranteed training or work if they want it.

Labour must apologise

Local people are right to feel cheated by Labours admission that they now back the cuts and are even calling for public-sector pay cuts. The shocking truth is that Labour have been viciously attacking our local MP and the coalition government for decisions that they themselves now support. Talk about giving politics a bad name! Its time local people had an apology for Labours lies and deception.

A job or learning place for every young person

The last Labour government allowed youth unemployment to soar. Now the Lib Dems have introduced the Youth Contract - every young person will be entitled to either a job, a training place, or an education place.

Hundreds more young people in Sheffield have taken up apprenticeships under the coalition government than under Labour. Mr Clegg said, Britain needs big, northern cities like Sheffield to be powerhouses for growth, creating the real jobs we need to get our economy back on track.

Labour Town Hall osses dragging feet on apprentices

Labour have accepted an innovative Liberal Democrat proposal to help 100 young people in Sheffield into work - but have delayed its implementation until the next financial year. 100 youngsters are already in apprenticeships set up by the council with help from the coalition government. The Lib Dems lobbied the Labour council to double the number of new apprenticeships to 200. Labour agreed, but insisted unemployed young people must wait until the next financial year to benefit from the Lib Dem suggestion. Ecclesall Lib Dem campaigner Penny Baker said, We all welcome Labours U-turn on apprenticeships. This Lib Dem plan will make a real difference. But 100 young people in Sheffield are wondering why Labour cant get their act together and help them find work right now. As a grandparent, Im very concerned. Only the Lib Dems can be counted on to stand up for our young people. Concern: Lib Dem campaigner Penny Baker (right) is disappointed that Labours dithering is keeping Sheffields youngsters out of work.

Residents set to deliver verdict on Labour Town Hall Bosses

Local voters will soon go to the polls to choose who should run our city. The choice here is between the local Lib Dems and Labours Town Hall Bosses who have wasted millions of taxpayers money. One Conservative candidate said winning a seat in Sheffield would be virtually impossible for her party this year. This candid admission follows the Conservatives worst ever local election results in Sheffield last year. The party even came third in a number of Sheffield Hallam seats it once controlled. Many people who voted Labour last year are angry about Labours U-turn on the cuts. Now that Labour are backing the cuts and the public-sector pay freeze, people feel cheated by Labour politicians. Colin Ross, Lib Dem Councillor for Dore and Totley Ward, said, Its clearer than ever that Sheffield is a straight fight between the Lib Dems and Labour. Only a vote for the local Lib Dems can help stop Labours waste and unnecessary cuts to local services.

Disgust at Labours weakness on crime

Standing up for his area: Lib Dem Rob Frost is fighting Labours plans to go easy on offenders. Crookes Ward Lib Dem campaigner Rob Frost has vowed to campaign against Labours plans to go soft on offenders in Sheffield. Labour are threatening Community Justice Panels with a 10% cut. Community Justice Panels force youth offenders to explain themselves to their victims. They have cut reoffending from 34% to 4%. Mr Frost said, Community Justice Panels are a popular and successful tool in the fight against youth offending. Its typical of Labour that they want to cut such an innovative and successful Lib Dem service.

Nick Cleggs victory for Sheffield children: the Pupil Premium cash bonus for schools is one of Nick Cleggs most cherished policies. Lib Dem Schools Minister Sarah Teather has almost doubled the amount of extra money Sheffield schools will receive in their Pupil Premium funding this year. Ms Teather travelled to Sheffield to announce the extra cash for Sheffield children. 19,040 children from lowerincome backgrounds will receive a 600 bonus for their schools each. The Pupil Premium is widely seen as one of the Lib Dems most popular policies. It works by giving extra funding for every child on free school meals. Schools can then spend the money however they like. Ms Teather said, My message to parents in Sheffield is to urge them to make a claim if they think their children may be eligible for free school meals, to make sure their children do not miss out on extra funding from the Pupil Premium. Local MP and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said, This idea is so important to me I put it on the front page of our manifesto. Im very proud to have been able to deliver it in government. It will help improve life chances for children across Sheffield, helping not just those from more deprived backgrounds but their classmates too. This years allocation is more than expected and is expected to rise even further next year.

Labour finally admit: Katie Condliffe

Weve been conning you

The Labour leaderships admission that they now back the cuts has caused fury amongst trades unions and local voters. After two years of opposing every cut, Ed Miliband and Ed Balls have admitted they wont reverse a single one. The news has left many voters and the unions feeling cheated by Labour. The Leader of the RMT Union described the move as a betrayal of millions of Labours core supporters. Many local people feel conned, having voted Labour last May because of their opposition to the cuts. That position has now been shown to be false. Lib Dem Leader Nick Clegg said, Labour left Britains finances on the brink of disaster. They have opposed every measure to clean up their mess. They have gone from the wrong place to all over the place.

Katie Condliffe, a Lib Dem parish councillor living in Loxley, is campaigning against Labours plans to build on local green-belt land in Stannington. Labour councillors recently brushed aside a campaign by local residents to stop hundreds of new houses being built on the old Loxley College site, and gave the plans their approval.

The old college site is an eyesore and it needs to be sorted out. But we must avoid development that will strain local infrastructure, and we have to protect our green belt. This is just the start. I wont stop campaigning to force Labours town-hall bosses to listen to local peoples views.

Lib Dems challenge Labours building blitz on Sheffield

Lib Dem parish councillor Katie Condliffe has joined local residents in denouncing the Labour councils plans to build hundreds of new houses on green spaces across Sheffield, including Worrall, Stannington, Crookes, Lydgate, and Fulwood. The proposed developments are being rushed through with the minimum legal amount of consultation. Ms Condliffe said, Its essential Sheffield protects its green spaces and its green belt. Labour must at least offer residents a decent consultation over these plans. Lib Dems protecting green spaces: Parish Councillor Katie Condliffe and Councillor David Baker are fighting Labours plans to build on local green spaces.

Lib Dems secure 400,000 for Dore Park-and-Ride

The government has yielded to pressure from the local Lib Dems and agreed to provide 400,000 for a 139-space parkand-ride car park by Dore & Totley Railway Station. The new car park will be useful to many residents, but Dore residents will be especially relieved to see easier parking in their area. Lib Dem councillor Colin Ross said, Like other residents, I see Dores parking problems daily. Im delighted weve got good news at last.
