History of the United States and New York: 2. Important ideas, social and cultural values, beliefs, and traditions from New York State and United States history illustrate the connections and interactions of people and events across time and from a variety of perspectives. 2. Investigate key turning points in New York State and United States history and explain why these events or developments are significant.

Lesson Objective(s):

During this review lesson, students will apply their knowledge of World War II to complete certain online activities that can be found on my website, student.plattsburgh.edu/ckobe001. Students will be asked to exert their proficiency of searching the Internet to find my website and locate a link directing them to an activities website. Once on the website, students will be able to differentiate between World War II leaders and battles that may or may not have taken place during World War II. Time permitting, students who finish early will be allowed to complete a jigsaw puzzle activity as a bonus activity. The lesson will be assessed by their completion of the activities and their recorded grades. Followed by a test during the next class period.

Introduce the Learning Activity:

From a historical standpoint, World War II has been considered one of the most monumental turning points in United States history. Prior to the United States declaration to enter the war, they played a crucial role in aiding the Allied attempts to defend Europe from Hitler and the Axis Powers. During the war, the United States soldiers were seen as liberators and heroes to their allies. The aftermath of the war brought the United States to the foreground of global affairs and signified their spot atop the globe as the most powerful nation in the world. Quite often, students overlook the events and actions of the military leaders, soldiers during World War II and focus on the end result. The goal of this lesson is to get students thinking about the major battles and famous individuals from the war by using an interactive website to engage their learning. In order to motivate the students to participate and become interested in this topic, they will be informed before they begin the assignment that any information presented during the review is far game to be on the test (i.e. names, dates, key terms). Students will also be asked to write down any question they get wrong as a studying method.

Provide Information:
Because this is a review lesson, students should have some previous knowledge about World War II and the historical aspects surrounding the war. The beginning of this unit discussed the rise of the Nazi party under Adolf Hitler, and his attempts to conquer Europe for Germany. Throughout the unit, students have completed activities and homework assignments that have followed a chronological sequence of events. The class also has some previous knowledge of the Holocaust because of their current English unit. Similarly, because the students have previous knowledge and assessments of the topic, they are allowed to refer to their notebooks or any previous text to find explanations, descriptions, or examples. I will also circulate the room to aid in any way possible. Provide Practice: Students will be asked to go to my website, student.plattsburgh.edu/ckobe001, and click on the link entitled Lesson Plans. From here they will access the link that will bring them to neok12.com/world-war-II.html and they will begin working on the activities. Students will work individually, using only their notes and previously administered text.

If they answer a question wrong, they will be asked to document the question and the correct answer in their text. It will be their responsibility to complete the assignments using the technology provided and document their progress by printing out their score pages for my assessment at the end of class.

Provide Knowledge of Results:

During the activity, I will be circulating the room, assessing student understanding and serving as an aid or a resource if the students have any questions. I will also offer assistance to anyone who appears to be struggling. My verbal feedback will indicate how well or how poorly students are performing. The written feedback that students will receive comes at the end of the unit in the form of a test. Their grade will accurately define their understanding of World War II.

Review the Activity: I will provide students with a list of key terms associated with the activity and the upcoming test for them to review for homework. The terms will summarize the main points addressed throughout the unit and highlight what was significant within this particular lesson. Method of Assessment: During the lesson, I will be circulating making summative assessments about the students comprehension, as well as asking them review questions at the end of the activity to confirm they actually attempted the assignment. The overall assessment will be the unit test during the following class period.
