THE CASE OF IOAN PETRU CULIANU

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Your broadcast "The History of Religion" appears to be

meant to alleviate the alleged Christian Orthodox
"fanaticism" of the people of Romania; that, however, begs
the question from the very beginning, since the Romanian
nation has been famous for its religious tolerance throughout
its tormented history and has never attempted to convert
anybody to Orthodoxy, while there have been many attempts
to convert the Romanians to Catholicism, Lutheranism, or
even satanism.

However, your action becomes even more dubious when

your host, Mr. Ioan Petru Culianu, appears not as an
objective and sedate historian of religion, as his writings
portray him, but is revealed rather as a fanatical enemy of
Christianity and a thoroughbred atheist. He makes along
those lines extreme statements that would embarrass any
scientist endowed with the least amount of consideration for
truth and for documentary evidence, no matter how
materialistically minded he might be.

Thus, your worthy host not only denies the historical

existence of Jesus Christ; he not only ridicules the
Resurrection of Christ, but in the alleged character of a
historian he claims the in the second century A.D. (or of our
era, as he and all atheists and all enemies of Christianity call
it), the Christians were so few that there were not enough of
them to form a funeral association, a funeral services
company rather. He claims that the Roman catacombs were
the property of funeral parlors, hence they were cemeteries
for everybody's use; not even the most entrenched enemies
of Christianity dared state a thing like that until now.
I would encourage your distinguished host to read, among
other things, the Dialogues of Lucianus of Samosatha, or the
correspondence of Pliny the Younger with the Roman
Emperor Trajan; that will correct his view on Christianity in
the second century A.D. Along other lines, if anyone could
connect ancient philosophy with Christianity, then it is not
Plato's name that would come forward, but the name of
Plotinus, who with all his different from Plato.

It my be that Professor Mircea Eliade would have shared his

learned follower's views, were he alive now; but if so, he
would most certainly have had the sense and the tactfulness
not to air them under the circumstances. At this time the
people of Romania are faced with a tragic reality: they see
that though the anti-Christian and anti-Orthodox propaganda
has more or less abated in Romania, as has the praise and
glorification of of tyrants such as Ceauşescu, that
propaganda is carries on relentlessly by the BBC in
broadcasts such as this this and such as the one hosted by
Mr. Matei Cazacu, and in the adulterated, degraded culture
that comes pouring over the air.

I should like to suggest that you discontinue Mr. Culianu's

atheist, anti-Christian broadcasts since they are totally
incompatible with the spiritual life and ideas of the Romanian
people, whose language Mr. Culianu is using.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I have read in the publications of exiled Romanians that on

the 21st of May of this year, Professor Ioan Petru Culianu
was murdered in one of the washrooms of the University of
Chicago, presumably, according to some versions, by
“agents of the Romanian secret police”.

If that were the case, it is unclear why the Romanian

neocommunists would do a thing like that, since Professor
Mircea Eliade and his follower Professor Culianu, who took
over from Professor Eliade, did everything to promote and
support the communist regime in Romania, endowing it with
the prestige of their positions, which dazzles even today
some members of the Romanian intelligentsia. One has only
to remember the great Mircea Eliade's funeral, which was
organized so as to be totally alien to Romanian funeral rites
and customs.

However, the younger of the two, Professor Culianu, went

further and asserted things that, even if they had crossed his
mind, Mircea Eliade would never had uttered in public.

I could mention here your broadcast “The History of

Religion” of July1990, where, among other things, Ioan
Culianu denied the existence of Jesus Christ and claimed
that the christian community in imperial Rome was a simple
commercial funeral association.

I wrote to you immediately while the bitter taste of that

broadcast was still fresh (see my other letter), and I drew
your attention to the fact that at this time, when the
Romanian nation is finding its way back to its ancestral
spiritual life, it is a great error to resort to such violent
atheistical propaganda carried on by a belated disciple of
yesterday's marxist-leninists.
However, you neither answered my letter nor took any kind
of action in the matter of those attacks on Christianity. If
Professor Culianu's assertions could, indeed, raise the ire of
a religious fanatic who did not know how to solve religious
conflicts other than with a gun (such things have happened
before), then I hold you to be morally responsible for Ioan
Culianu's murder. You are guilty of having exposed Ioan
Culianu without protecting him; in the similar case of
Rushdie, the Indian author who outraged the religious
feelings of moslems, the British state did protect him.

That, however, does not come as a surprise; your bias is

obvious. You continue to use the term “The History of
Romania” - which is a territory – and not “of the Romanian
people” - who are a nation. That distinction has been heard
for the first time in the Romanian language on the lips of the
communist history writers Roller and Miron Constantinescu,
whose propaganda work you seem to be so happy to carry
on.
Your attitude is that of a totalitarian nomenclature, and has
nothing to do with a true democratic spirit: the very fact that
you do not answer letters and completely disregard any just
comment your listeners make proves that.

As I am opposed to any act of violence, I strongly disapprove

of Ioan Petru Culianu's murder; however, I demand that the
investigation and capture of his murders be carried on
objectively, without bias and without preconceived ideas; if it
is true that a religious fanatic was outraged by Ioan Petru
Culianu's destructive antichristian ideology in his historical
overviews, it does no go without saying that that religious
fanatic must have been a Romanian.

Our only weapon in our struggle to achieve democracy and

understanding among people can only be the truth; nothing
else will serve.

Stimaţi domni,

Am înţeles că prin transmisiunea dvoastră întitulată “Istoria

religiilor” urmăriţi să îmblânziţi presupusul “fanatism” ortodox-
creştin al Românilor din ţară, lucru de la început discutabil, odată
ce poporul nostru, cunoscut prin toleranţa sa în decursul
sbuciumatei sale istorii, nu a încercat să ortodoxizeze pe nimeni,
aşa cum au vrut alţii să-l catolicizeze, să-l luteranizeze sau chiar
satanizeze.

Dar acţiunea dvoastră apare cu totul compromisă atunci când în

persoana dlui Culianu în loc să prezentaţi un istoric al religiilor,
obiectiv şi cumpătat, cum se proiectează prin pretractările sale, nu
e greu de descoperit, sub ele, un fanatic anticreştin, ateu pur sânge.
Pe această linie dură, ajunge să susţie nişte stupidităţi de care s'ar
ruşina orice om de ştiinţă, oricât de pozitivist dar cu un minim de
respect faţă document şi realitate. Astfel “ilustrul” dvoastră
comentator, nu numai că ajunge să conteste existenţa istorică a lui
Isus şi să-şi bată joc de taina Invierii, dar susţine ca pretins istoric
că în secolul II după Christos (al erei noastre zice dânsul ca toţi
anticreştinii atei) creştinii erau aşa de puţini încât abea dacă puteau
forma o asociaţie de înmormântări, adică mai clar spus, o instituţie
de pompe funebre. Domnia sa consideră că aşa ceva au fost
catacombele, deci un fel de cimitire la îndemâna tuturora, fapt pe
care nu au îndrăznit să-l susţie nici cei mai înrăiţi duşmani ai
creştinismului.

Recomand distinsului dvoastră colaborator să citească printre altele

Dialogurile lui Lucian din Samosata sau corespondenţa dintre
Plinius cel tânăr şi împăratul Traian pentru a primi o perspectivă
mai adecvată asupra creştinismului secolului al doilea după
Christos. Şi mai apoi, dacă se poate susţine o legătură între
filozofia antică cu creştinismul, întră în discuţie nu Platon ci Plotin,
ceea ce cu tot neoplatonismul său tot altceva este.

Poate că Mircea Eliade ar fi împărtăşit părerile doctului său elev,

dar mai ales în condiţiile date ar fi avut bunul simţ şi tactul, să nu
facă uz de ele. Acuma Românul din ţară se confruntă cu tragica
realitate că după ce în ţara lui, de bine de rău, a încetat propaganda
antiortodoxă şi anticreştină ca şi comentarul biografiilor tiranului
Ceauşescu et comp, această acţiune (vezi transmisiunea lui Matei
Cazacu) continuă cu o stăruinţă de invidiat la postul de radio BBC,
prin toată pseudo-cultura ce înţelege să o propage pe calea undelor.

In concluzie, în interesul dvoastră, cred că ar fi cazul să întrerupeţi

transmisiunile anticreştine şi atee ale lui Culianu, complet străin de
spiritualitatea şi idealurile poporului român, în a cărui limbă,
oricum, se pronunţă domnul respectiv.

DESPRE CAZUL IOAN PETRU CULIANU

- Scrisoare deschisă postului de radio BBC Londra -

Aflu din publicaţiile din exil despre asasinarea pe ziua de 21 Mai

1991 la Chicago, în closetul Universităţii, a lui Ioan Culianu,
autorii prezumtivi ai acestui act, după multe versiuni, fiind
“securiştii români”.

Desigur se pune întrebarea, ce interese ar fi avut s'o facă

neocommuniştii din ţară, atunci când Mircea Eliade, - pe care ca
elev al lui l-a urmat la catedră, I. Culianu, - prin editarea sa în ţară
a colaborat cu regimul comunist căruia i-a dat un gir, purtat cu
mândrie, şi urmele acestui cult mai pot fi şi astăzi
observate la unii oameni de cultură români. In acest context ar mai
fi de amintit înmormântarea marelui savant, complet străină de
tradiţiile poporului nostru.

Dar iată, tânărul Culianu şi-a permis să afirme lucruri pe care

Mircea Eliade chiar dacă le-ar fi gândit, nu le-a susţinut niciodată
public.

Mă refer de pildă la emisiunea de la radio BBC din Iulie 1990,

întitulată Istoria religiilor, în care respectivul Ioan Culianu, printre
alte aberaţii, contesta existenţa lui Christos şi degrada comunitatea
creştină din Roma imperială la o simplă asociaţie de … pompe
funebre.

Rău impresionat de această emisiune îndată v'am scris, atrăgându-

vă atenţia (vezi scrisoarea redată alăturat) că într'o vreme când
poporul român abea îşi găseşte drumul către Dumnezeu, este mai
mult decât o greşală să recurgi la atare ateisme violente, debitate de
un epigon al marxist-leniniştilor de ieri.

Nerăspunzându-mi şi neluând niciun fel de măsuri împotriva unor

astfel de manifestări anticreştine, vă consider că sunteţi autorii
morali ai asasinării lui Ioan Culianu, afirmaţiile sale, cred, au putut
provoca mânia unui fanatic religios care, cum se întâmplă în astfel
de cazuri, nu a înţeles să-şi rezolve litigiile de credinţă decât
punând mâna pe pistol. Prin urmare purtaţi vina că l-aţi expus pe
Ioan Culianu fără să-l apăraţi, cum au făcut autorităţile engleze cu
scriitorul indian Rushdie, după ce acesta a ultragiat
mahomedanismul.

Dar nu-i prima oară că procedaţi aşa, când continuaţi să vorbiţi de

Istoria României şi nu de cea a Românilor, primul termen a fost
introdus la noi de istoriografii comunişti Roller şi Miron
Constantinescu, în fieful postum al cărora se vede, vă simţiţi tare
bine.

Insăşi faptul că nu răspundeţi la scrisori şi vă lasă rece observaţiile

juste ale unui ascultător, denotă o viziune totalitară fără vreo
legătură cu spiritul adevărat democrat!!!

Revenind la cazul Ioan Petru Culianu, deoarece sunt contra

oricărui act de violenţă, condamn aspru asasinarea lui, dar totodată
cer organelor competente să cerceteze crima obiectiv, fără
prejudecăţi, autorul asasinatului, după părerea mea, şi aduc
anumite flagrante indicii în acest sens, trebue căutat printre
fanaticii religioşi, nu neapărat români, ofensaţi de ideologia
dizolvant anticreştină a istoricului religiilor Ioan Petru Culianu.

Numai ADEVĂRUL poate servi nobila cauză democrată şi

înţelegerea între oameni, idealuri pentru care cu toţii ne luptăm.
