COPENHAGEN Bike-Share Competition - Nov 2009

Ref. competitor:25007

Introduction
Copenhagen is well known all over the world as one of the most bicyclefriendly place. Furthermore, the city has decided to x the objective to continue to improve this status by increasing the number of bicycle users. So, how to make it possible? One part of the answer could come from a well designed bike-share system that will make it easy, simple and pleasant to move in and around Copenhagen and Frederiksberg Everywhere in town, in any type of situation, and for everyone, this shared bicycle should be as simple and natural to use as ones own bicycle, without any additional constraints. Also, access to this system should be easy in order to encourage people to register themselves and secure in order to limit degradation and other problems. Finally, to make sure that this concept become a success, all care should be taken to ensure maximum security for bike users and other persons navigating in the city.

1. Myloop: Concept & Overview

Myloop is a global concept for bike sharing in Copenhagen. The system is composed of the bikes, the stations (storage), the users and a monitoring terminal. Basically, use of the bicycle is possible for registered user. There is possibility to rent a standard bicycle or to rent a trike that allows for transportation of large lugage or passengers ( one adult or two children). By using a smart card, they can borrow a bicycle parked in a station. Each bike is equiped with a GPS that transmit information to the monitoring terminal such as location and status of each bicycle ( rented/avalable/ booked ) and the identity of the user.

2. Bicycle Design (Standard type)

The Myloop bicycle is characterized by a unique architecture build arround hubless wheels and a thick aluminum frame. The rst impression is a feeling of security and durability. The central beam, between the front part and the rear part is curved to facilitate access onto the bike. Handlebar is made by a prolongation of the fork tube. The construction is simple and the body is sturdy. A command console is placed over the headset, along the fork tube. Front LED lighting, a screen and a card sensor are integrated in this console. On the rear part, seat and luggage rack are adjustable in height. It gives the possibility of attaching things over or hanging things under this rack. A rear LED light are located underness the seat. The light swicthes both on and off automaticaly according to the luminosity. Hubless wheels are composed of a puncture-proof tire, a standard 20 inch rim spokeless, and 6 nylon guiding wheels xed on two structural covers made of an aluminium-magnesium alloy. (cf. chapter 6) The transmission is created by a belt reinforced by carbon ber. Inside the rear wheel a gear system transmit the rotation from the belt to the wheel. Breaking is possible by a standard hand break or by back-pedalling. In this case, a generator on the wheel recharges the battery.

3. Station and storage

Due to the popularity and the large amount of bicycles in Copenhagen, parking and storage is a real problem in some place of the city. Myloop proposes a exible, space-saving and economical storage concept based on three types of stations: 1 Main stations ( 3 to 5 stations) Located in proximity to central places of Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, this high capacity parking is easily accessible due to a specic signage (in the train, bus metro, street ). At any time, at least one person is present to sell subscriptions, rent special options or simply to inform the public about the use of Myloop. 2 Secondary stations: (15 to 20 stations) These stations are based principally around the city center, close to high-trafc areas and close to large companies all around the town . Their parkings have a medium capacity. Nobody is physically present in this stations but a connected terminal allows to take/renew a subscription or to book a bike. 3 Short Station (more than 100 stations) This minimal type of station are easily accessible from everywhere in the city. The only equipment is a terminal to lock the bicycle and eventually, a protection from the rain. Locking and recharging on the terminal: To be more exible and auto-adjustable, locking terminals do not have to directly connect with one bike / trike. The rst bike is plugged into the terminal, the second bike is plugged into the rst one, the third one... This locker has also an input electricity function to recharge the battery. Small and large stations use the same type of locking terminal. The difference is only the number of terminals available.

It is possible to attach bicycles on both sides of the terminal

4. System use
Registration In order to rent a bicycle, people have to register to Myloop. For regulars users, this is possible in main station or by mail. Identity, home address and bank account will be to justiate. Occasionals users can take a short term entry in return of their identity document, credit card number or other appropriate guarantee. If the registration is validated, they receive a password and a magnetic card. Get a bicycle Basically, bike are avalable in any Myloop station. The light located on the top of the console indicate if the bike is free to use (green light) or already booked (orange) Each bike is equiped with a card sensor. When the card is passed on the console, the bicycle detecte it and request a password on the tactile screen. After validation, the padlock is unlocked and user can get the bike. At this moment, the light on the console switch to red color and the use can start. Book a bike To be sure to get a bicycle, it is possible to book one in a station, or by using online services. (internet, mobile phone...) User have to indicate in which station and from when bike have to be booked. Using multimedia services Some informations and services are accessible from the tactile screen, user have only to follow indication. Of course, it is also possible to use the bike without using this interface. Paying Myloop Myloop is payable by length of use. For exemple by 30 minutes intervals. According to the contract, user will receive regularly a statement of account. Different way are possible to pay services : directly in a station, by transfer... Locking the bike for a short break Its also possible to use the padlock unrolled in the frame to lock the bike as any other bike while the user goes shopping or drops off children at school. During this break, the bike is reserved (red light) and nobody can rent it. Finishing to use the bike User have only to put the bike in any Myloop station and to pull the padlock unrolled inside the frame and plug it on a terminal or in a bike already plugged on a terminal. At this moment, light will switch from red color to green and the use will be nish. Emergency situation In case of emergency situation or trouble, user can call Emergency services by using the red button on the top of the console. A controller will start communication with this personn by using an integrated communication system or directly by mobile phone. Also, an accelerometer located inside the bike can detect collisions and transmit directly an alert message with GPS coordinated to the monitoring services.

5. Variation and option

Myloop is also avalable in trike version. It permit to convey a passenger, for exemple old person, children or disabled person. A belt allows to attach passengers. The trike is also very usefull to carry cumbersome or heavy stuff. Some options can be rent or bought at the counter or in vending machine For exemple baby seat, umbrella, rain coat or a clip to attach umbrella...

6. Technics
Electronics To ensure functionality and security, some electronic component are needed inside the bike: -Card sensor -Tactile screen -Luminosity sensor -LED (front and rear light) -Programable mainboard to connect, control and read data from each element (arduino type) -Accelerometer -Communication system -Battery -RFID stcker

Hubless wheel This hubless wheel is only based on existing technology already used in bicycle. The components are: - Standard 20 inch puncture-proof tire - standard 20 inch rim spokeless - Nylon guiding band xed on the rim - 6 nylon guiding wheels xed on bearing ball. - Transmission gear - Right and left structural cover made by an aluminium-magnesium alloy

Conclusion
Establish a modern and innovatibe bike-share system in Copenhagen will provide benets for the city, its resident and visitors. It will attest the position of Copenhagen as a leading and inuent place for green transportation. Already, when Copenhagen have launch his rst shared bicycle services, a lot of city all over the world have follow this exemple by offering similar services. This time again, Copenhagen will become a new reference. The question is now, how to realize it? This project is perhaps an ideal opportunity to federate local enterprises, local knowledges and local Human power. Myloop concept is only a light overview about what could be a bike-share system for Copenhagen. So, lets catch the loop and continue to think together about Future of Copenhagen !
