Open Post Offence

This is a simple open post offence, from Jerry Petitgoues Open Post Motion Offence DVD. All positions are interchangeable. It is a pass, cut and fill offence so it is excellent for young players to learn the important concepts of spacing, timing, floor balance, and pass, cut and fill. General Rules: 1. On a basket cut go with speed to the front of the rim and keep your eyes on the ball all the way. 2. Anytime you are denied backcut. 3. When filling from wing to the top, go to the middle of the foul line then break to the top. 4. Play with proper timing the pass must be timed and the cut must be timed so the ball and the cutter arrive at the position at the same time. Rules: 1. Anytime you can drive to the basket, do it! 2. Pass from top to wing - basket cut and go out the other side. 3. Pass from wing to top - basket cut and come out same side. 4. Pass from wing to the corner run a screen and roll. If roll does not get the ball Positions/Spots and Spacing: Point O1 positioned at top of key one step behind 3 pt. line Wings O2 (right wing) and O3 (left wing) positioned at foul line extended and one step outside the 3 pt. line Corners O4 (right corner) and O5 (left corner) positioned one step above the basket and one step outside the 3 pt. line

Rule 2: Pass from top to wing basket cut and go out the other side. The weak-side players will fill to the top and wing. They must cut with proper timing.

Rule 3: Pass from wing to top basket cut and come out same side.

Double: The same rules apply as the previous play except there will be two cutters on a pass to the wing, and the third cutter will get the ball at the top. In the diagram O1 basket cuts, and O3 fills to the top and then basket cuts. O3, the 2nd cutter, (the wing coming to the top) cuts to the top, not the middle of the foul line, and then basket cuts. The player in the corner, O5, will fill to the top.

Rule 4: Pass from wing to corner follow the pass and execute a screen and roll.

Point to Wing Screen The point is a cutter first and then goes across and screens with his/her back to the ball. The cutter goes to the basket and comes out opposite the ball. The screener comes back to the point. The corner fills to the wing.

Screen The next step is to add screening to the open post offence. Rules: 1. On every pass you make screen away. 2. When you screen away be a cutter first. This means step to the ball first to establish a screening lane. 3. If you receive a screen either: a) curl to the basket b) back-cut to the basket 4. If you screen, after the cutter uses your screen, replace back to where you came from.

Wing to Corner Screen When the wing passes to the point the wing will down screen for the corner player, with his/her back to the basket. The screener must be a cutter first. The cutter goes to the basket and comes out the same side he/she came from. The screener will come back to the same position he/she came from.

Big Inside Wing to Point Screen Here is a method to get a post up. When the wing passes the ball into the corner he/she will screen for the point. The screen should be set with his/her back to the ball. The point cuts to the basket and goes out the opposite side. The screener comes back to where he/she came from. The wings down screen for the two bigs. The point enters the ball, basket cuts and goes out opposite the ball.

The opposite wing, O5 in this example, breaks to the middle of the foul line and then out to the point. O5 receives a pass from O4.

O5 reverses the ball to O3, and cuts to the front of the rim At the same time O4 breaks to the point. O3 passes to O4 at the top who looks inside immediately to O5 posting up.
