Questions 29 34 Read the article report below carefully and answer the following questions. Every time we breathe, we are at the risk of inhaling dangerous chemicals that have found their way into the air. An air pollutant is known as a substance in the air that can cause harm to humans and the environment. Pollutants can be in the form of solid particles, liquid droplets or gases. Pollutants can be classified as either primary or secondary. The primary pollutants are substances directly emitted from a process, such as ash from a volcanic eruption, the carbon monoxide gas from a motor vehicle exhaust or sulphur dioxide released from factories. While for secondary, they form in the air when primary pollutants react or interact. There are many different chemical substances that contribute to air pollution. Most of them are nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides and organic compound. They can evaporate and enter the atmosphere. Examples of natural causes are forest fires, volcanic eruptions, wind erosion, pollen dispersal, evaporation of organic compounds and natural radioactivity. This pollution can affect our health. It can cause diseases such as bronchitis, lung cancer and heart disease. There are two main types of solution; which are input control and the output control. The input control involves presenting a problem before it occurs. In this stage, it involves five major input control method. People may try to restrict population growth, use less energy, improve energy efficiency, reduce waste and move to non-polluting renewable forms of energy production. For output control, it seeks to fix problems caused by air pollution. This usually means cleaning up an area that has been damaged by pollution. Read the letter below carefully and answer the questions that follow. No 12, Jalan SS 2/8, Sungai Way, 47300 Petaling Jaya, Selangor Darul Ehsan. 28 April 2010 Dear Jennifer, How are you? I am fine here. I hope you are fine too. I received your letter three days ago. I was very shocked to hear that your house has been robbed last month. I was also very relieved to find out that you and your family were not at home when that incident happened. Next time, you should be very careful. As you live in the city, you have to beware of robbery. Besides, the number of robberies is soaring day by day. Therefore, I would like to share some home safety tips with you here. Firstly, ensure that the gates, doors and windows are locked at all times. An open gate, door or window is indeed an invitation to robberies. So, remember to lock them before leaving the house. You can install a burglar alarm to further fortify your home against robberies besides using padlocks and safety chain latch. Next, keep your money and jewellery in the bank. You can be reassured that your valuables are safer in the bank than at home. This is because they will not get anything valuable from your house. You should make the surrounding of your house brighter by switching on the lights at night. This will prevent the robbers or burglars from breaking in your house. Finally, inform your neighbours when you are going on a holiday. They will keep an eye on your house. I advise you to give them the house keys to switch on the lights at night and collect your letters in the box when you are not around. Thus, robbers and burglars will not know that you are not around. I hope that you will adhere to these tips to ensure that robbers will not break in your house again. Take care and keep in touch. Cleanliness means free from dirt, illnesses and diseases. One can keep oneself clean and also the place clean. Cleanliness also plays a great role in keeping oneself healthy. Personal cleanliness involves cleanliness of body and teeth. Teeth decay if they are not kept clean, and the body accumulates dirt if it is not clean. It can lead to itchiness and discomfort. Using clean clothes also helps one to look smart. So personal cleanliness is important. One should wash ones combs and handkerchiefs properly as they are used regularly and collect dirt. Fingernails should be short and clean for they accumulate dirt and we handle food with our hands. Our surroundings should be clean too. Dirty places breed flies and mosquitoes and other pests which are detrimental to health. We should keep our home, school, streets and country clean. Cleanliness helps to make our country beautiful and a clean and green country attracts tourists. We should throw all litter into bins provided at bus stops, hawker centres and along the streets. Rubbish should not be dumped in vacant plots of land as this attracts insects and mice to breed in such places. Mosquitoes spread diseases like malaria, and if our drains are blocked, they breed in the dirty, stagnant water. If we throw rubbish into drains, it will not ensure a smooth flow of water. Mice and flies can cause various diseases such as plague and dysentery. Food should be kept covered. It should not be left open. Thus cleanliness is as important as life itself. To ensure a clean country each one of us should do our part. So, I think we, knowing how important cleanliness is, should try our best to keep as clean as possible. Write a summary on the importance of cleanliness. Both of them rushed their respective designs to the patent office and Alexander Graham Bell patented his telephone first. The telegraph and telephone are both wire-based electrical system, and Alexander Graham Bells success with the telephone came as a direct result of his attempts to improve the telegraph. When Bell began experimenting with electrical signals, the telegraph had been an established means of communication for some 30 years. However, the telegraph with its dot-and-dash morse code, was basically limited to receving and sending one message at a time. Bells extensive knowledge of the nature of sound and his understanding of music enabled him to come out with the idea of transmitting multiple messages over the same wire at the same time. By June 1875, he and the other inventors had proven that different tones would vary the strength of an electric current in a wire. To achieve this, they have to build a working transmitter with a membrane capable of varying electronic currents and a receiver that would reproduce these variations in audible frequencies. On 2 June 1875, while he was experimenting his technique called harmonic telegraph, he discovered the hear sound over a wire. The sound was that of twanging clock spring. He described his successful experiment with telephone on 10 March 1876. Fireflies are amazing creatures as they are able to emit light twinkle. They are from the family of beetles. According to a Japanese legend, the firefly is actually the daughter of the Moon God. She was given to a childless couple. The girl was very beautiful. Many men fought over her. The heartbroken girl decided to return to the moon forever. However, she missed her family on earth. This reaction takes place each time the firefly breathes. The light is emitted through the abdomen which is between the head and the thorax. The twinkling of the firefly is a means of communication for the fireflies. It is used to find a mate as well as to warn other fireflies of danger. The light also scares predators away. The firefly is important to man. A firefly is a biological indicator of river pollution. Fireflies do not live in polluted waters. It also controls pests. I know you are in a dilemma. If I was in your place, I would feel the same. However, justice must prevail. The best thing you can do is to advise Jamal. You can be honest with him. Tell him that you are a witness to the incident. Urge him to admit what he has done. I know Jamal may feel offended. However, I think you should be a true friend. Jamal maybe in a dilemma himself. He probably does not know what to do. The first thing you should do is approach him gently. Tell him that you saw him taking the watch from Aslams drawer. Now, you should be very tactful. This is because Jamal may be going through an emotional phase. Then, tell Jamal what the watch means to Aslam. Do tell him that the watch was a gift from his late grandmother. Indeed, it has a sentimental value to him. Aslam has lost something very valuable. Do encourage Jamal to meet Aslam and tell Aslam the truth. This will be better than someone else telling Aslam. This is because the facts can be twisted. This will worsen the relationship between both your friends. At first, Aslam may be annoyed and they may even be an exchange of heated words. Dont worry as time is the best healer. Most importantly, Aslam will be happy to get back his watch. I wish you all the best as you are doing a good deed to both Jamal and Aslam. Section C Black Beauty The novel I have chosen to write about is Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. The character that I think is loyal is Black Beauty. He is loyal to all his masters even though he is exhausted. He still raced to get Dr. White in order to save Mrs. Gordons life. While for friends, he always gives good advices and wishes for Gingers death so that the suffering will come to an end. Journey to the Centre of the Earth The novel I have chosen to write about is Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. I find the character Axel Lidenbrock very loyal. He obeys his uncle, Professor Otto Lidenbrock very much. As a proof, Axel is reluctant at first to go on the expedition but finally he agrees because his uncle asks him to go. Even though they face danger and near to death experiences, he still continues to stay. Because of his uncle, Axel is willing to stay although he feels like going home. The Boscombe Valley Mystery In the novel The Boscombe Valley Mystery by Arthur Conan Doyle, I find the most loyal person is Alice Turner. She is very loyal to James McCarthy. She believes in his innocence and really supports him. She is willing to hire Sherlock Holmes in order to prove his innocence. She did not reveal James secret about his marriage. PAPER 2 Section A 51A, Pangsapuri Kekwa, Taman Kekwa, 28600 Karak, Pahang Darul Makmur. 19 November 2010 Dear Jasmyn, How are you feeling now? I hope you have recovered from your bad flu. I am very sorry that you were unable to attend Annabelles birthday party. We all had such a wonderful time. When I reached her house, I was suprised to see the house lit up with colourful bulbs. There were colourful balloons tied around the garden. Annabelle was dressed in a beautiful black sequinned dress. She wore a glittering crown on her head. Suddenly, a large trolley was wheeled in. We were all very curious as there was a large box on it. There was a loud drumroll and suddenly the box opened. To our amusement, out came a clown! The clown danced merrily and gave us all a party pack. It contained a beautiful paper hat and colourful balloons. The clown then performed a magic show. We were all so delighted. Then, dinner was served. We ate satay, fried chicken, fried rice and fried noodles. We had some party games such as musical chairs and the Big Wind Blows. Attractive prizes were given to the winners. Next, was the time we were all waiting for, that was the cake cutting ceremony. The cake was placed on a beautifully decorated trolley with lace and flowers. To my surprise, the birthday cake was my favourite cheese cake from Secret Recipe. I truly enjoyed the cake. Annabelle has given you a party pack and a get well card. I will visit you next week and give them to you. Do get well soon as it will be Marias birthday party next week. Take care and bye! Your friend, Lily Section B not to walk further/stop saw a black cobra, all coiled up ready to attack got frightened could not move and mind was completely blank friend dragged the writer away both writer and friend started running Section C Black Beauty From the novel Black Beauty by Anna Sewell, the lesson I have learnt is do not mistreat or abuse animals. I have learnt more about animals and how to take care of them. If not, I would be like Mistress of Earlshall who had been ignorant and cruel towards animals. Other than that, we should be

responsible and caring toward people and animals. We should try to help them whenever we can so that we are loved and respected by others. Journey to the Centre of the Earth The lesson I have learnt from the novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne is to be persistent in finding a solution to every problem that appear and always keep trying until you succeed. Never easily give up like Otto Lidenbrocks attitude. Other than that, we must respect the elders. Always obey and listen to what they advice and suggest as they have more experiences than us. The Boscombe Valley Mystery In the novel entitled The Boscombe Valley Mystery, written by Arthur Conan Doyle, the lesson that I have learnt is to keep an open mind. We should not judge others without getting all the facts like people in Boscombe Valley who thought that James McCarthy was guilty but he is not. Besides that we should not be greedy as it can lead to a lot of problems in future. For example, Charles McCarthy who has blackmailed John Turner and kept asking for more was finally got murdered, while his son nearly got punished for a crime which he did not commit. PAPER 2 Section A A very good morning to our beloved principal, senior assistants, teachers and friends. It gives me immense pleasure to stand here today to give a speech on the activities that have been lined up for the next two weeks in conjunction with the Environment Awareness Campaign. Firstly, we will conduct a recycling campaign for two weeks. Every student is urged to collect aluminium cans, bottles and plastic containers for recycling. Please send your collection to the recycling centre which is the canteen, every Monday to Friday afternoon for two weeks. These objects will then be sent to the main recycling centre to be recycled. Secondly, there will be a cleanliness programme every Saturday for two consecutive weeks beginning this Saturday. All the students are required to help clear clogged drains and pick up the rubbish strewn all over the school compound. Remember to put the different types of rubbish that can be recycled into the appropriate recycling bins. The next activity lined up is the Grow Your Own Vegetables programme which will be held this Saturday.

Each class will be allocated a small plot of land to work on. Your task is to grow vegetables in the allotments assigned. The seedlings will be given to you by your class teacher. I would like to remind all the students that this programme is a long-term programme. Each class has to tend to its own allotment. Finally, we will be listening to a talk on water and electricity conservation to be given by an officer from the local Environment Department. The lower secondary students will listen to the talk from 9.00 am to 10.00 am at the school hall this Wednesday. The upper secondary students will listen to the talk from 11.00 am to noon in the same venue on the same day. Do remember to bring along your notebooks and stationeries to take down notes. PAPER 2 Section A A robbery is every house owners nightmare. The fear of losing lives and belongings remain with us at all times. Yet, incidents of robberies are soaring day-by-day. We can all help to make our homes safe from burglaries and robberies. How? Firstly, ensure that the gates, doors and windows are locked at all times. An open gate, door or window is indeed an invitation to robberies. So, remember to lock the gates, doors and windows especially before leaving the house. It is also a wise move to install a burglar alarm to further fortify your home against robberies and burglaries. However, if you cannot afford one, dont fret. You can use padlocks and safety-chain latch to enhance the security of your house. It does not cost much but it is quite effective for safeguarding your home. Next, it is advisable to keep your money and jewellery in the bank. You can be reassured that your valuables are safer in the bank than at home. Also, this will deter robbers or burglars from entering your house in the future. This is because if they do not get anything valuable from your house the first time, the robbers or burglars may not want to break-into your house again. In addition, prevention is always better than cure. You should prevent burglary by switching on the lights outside your house at night. The bright surrounding will deter burglars from breaking into your house. Finally, do inform your neighbours when you are going on a holiday. They will be able to keep an eye on your house. It is also advisable to give them the house keys to switch on the lights of your house and collect your letters in your letter box. Thus, robbers or burglars will not know that you are not around. Safeguarding ones home against burglary or robbery is necessary especially nowadays when the cost of living is getting higher. It is good to invest in a good house alarm system to ascertain the safety of your family and loved ones. Section B

Thus, we experience global warming. With a warmer earth, there may be changes in rainfall patterns, a rise in sea level and much discomfort to nature and mankind. Hence, we have to halt global warming. In fact, there are many simple steps that we can all adhere to stop global warming. Firstly, we have to reduce the use of electrical items. We can light up our homes naturally with sunlight instead of using electrical lamps. In fact, we can also wash our clothes manually instead of using the washing machine. Remember, when you are not using any electrical equipment, turn off 2 7 12 17 22 27 32 37 D C B D B C A C 3 8 13 18 23 28 33 38 D A B C C B B A 4 9 14 19 24 29 34 39 B B C C D A D A 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 A D C A D D A B

the switch. Secondly, we must get into the recycling habit. You ought to collect recycling items such as paper, plastic and glassware. Then, send them to recycling center. Also, use recycled items and at the same time encourage your friends to do so. In this way, we reduce landfills and open burning. In addition, we reduce the number of trees being cut down for paper as we can use recycled paper. Next, we have to reduce fumes from the vehicles by car pooling or by using the public transport. Often, we complain of not having time for exercise. So, why drive to school or to the restaurant? We can walk or cycle to nearby destinations. In this way, not only will we reduce our petrol expenditure, but also save the earth! Finally, grow plants and trees around your house. By going green, not only will your backyard and frontyard look green but the plants will also provide you and your family with the oxygen supply that is so essential for our existence. Hence, we can help stop global warming. Remember, the fate of our earth is in our hands! Section B emits light when luciterin reacts with oxygen used as a means of communication during mating season and to signal danger to word off enemies signals pollution and helps to eliminate pests Section C Black Beauty I really enjoyed reading the story of Black Beauty written by Anna Sewell because the main character of the story is an animal which is strong and patient. The story gives me inspiration to be more determined in going through life. It

teaches me to be patient and do not rebel. Black Beauty has been calm and patient although he has been treated badly. Journey to the Centre of the Earth I enjoyed reading the story Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne because it highlights the close relationship between the two main characters Professor Otto Lidenbrock and his nephew, Axel Lidenbrock. The professor is not only Axels uncle but also his guardian. Although they are always quarrelling, they care about each other very much. Axel finds his uncle is stubborn and an impatient man and sometimes he does not seem to care about others at all. Sometimes, the professor gets impatient and irritated with Axels pessimism and lack of confidence. However, the professor still cares about his nephew. He takes care of Axel when he is exhausted and dehydrated. He is also willing to look for his nephew when the boy gets lost. He is overjoyed as they find him still alive. The relationship between these two characters has made the story interesting and enjoyable to read. The Boscombe Valley Mystery I enjoyed reading The Boscombe Valley Mystery by Arthur Conan Doyle because it is full of thrill. Holmes saves the life of an innocent man despite the evidence against him. In the beginning, all the information about the case seems to indicate that James is guilty. However, Holmes notices other things that others do not notice. Through his investigation, he is able to come up with a detailed description of the murderer. I like the way the story behind the murder slowly unfolds and the reader finally finds out how Holmes reveals the truth. The story is enjoyable and I think I would enjoy reading more stories similar to this.
