GREENVILLE More than 100 people supported
the May 8 ceremonial groundbreaking of the advanced
technology center being constructed on Montcalm Com-

Before a representative group put on their hardhats
and scooped a few shovels full of dirt, MCC President
Bob Ferrentino addressed the attendees and stressed the
importance of MCCs partnerships with area businesses
and industries, city and school offcials, area hospitals,
four-year colleges and universities, local organizations,
and county, regional and state governmental entities.
It indeed takes us all working together to build a
better future for all of us, Ferrentino said. The end

Virginia Jaquays
LAKEVIEW Virginia Jaquays, 88, of
Coral passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012,
at Twin Oaks in Greenville.
She was born and raised in Lakeview.
She picked up potatoes
for many years for Gil-
bert Wheeler. She also
worked at Electrolux for
24 years. She enjoyed go-
ing to Howard City with
her friends at the potluck
dinners. She also enjoyed
the gospel music at the
Coral Baptist Church.
She enjoyed talking to
Delphine Jenkins, her special friend, every-
day.
Virginia was survived in death by her
children, Frank (Shirley) Jaquays, Marvin
(Maureen) Jaquays and Shirley (Bob) Ber-
gin; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchil-
dren and one great-great-granddaughter;
brother Jim Ostrander; and several nieces
and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her
loving husband, Newton Jaquays; parents,
Roy and Jessa (Green) Ostrander; sister, Di-
xie Ostrander; brothers and sisters-in-law,
Willard (Freda) Ostrander, Charles (Julie)
Ostrander; sister-in-law, Flora Ostrander
and great-grandson, Jason Baker.
According to Virginias wishes, a private
(family only) graveside service was held at 11
a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2012, at West Pine
Cemetery with Pastor Burt Boes, of Coral
Baptist Church, offciating. Memorial contri-
butions may be made in Virginias memory
to the Coral Fire Department and the Action
Center of Howard City. Condolences may be
made online to the family at www.brigham-

Helping Hands gives spring update
Once again a big thank you to the entire community
for its ongoing support of Helping Hands. The fnancial
and volunteer support given to this ministry continues
to amaze the Helping Hands board of directors and all of
its supporting churches. 2012 represents the 22nd year
of service to the community.
The Helping Hands ministry continues to work dili-
gently toward an expanded vision of service to the com-
munity and toward its goal of building a new more ef-
fcient facility on its new site just south of the Howard
City VFW Hall.
Helping Hands asks the community to think about
some things. Its January and you have no heat.
Maybe no food. Perhaps you have lost your job or the
well that provides your water has failed. What do you
do? How do you help someone you know is in need in
these areas? Helping Hands wants to be able to serve
our community by being a greater resource to help with
these kinds of problems.
It is an expansion of the vision of the board and the
local churches that support the ministry that Helping
Hands expand their services and meet those types of
needs. To do this, and to reach its goal of a new facility,
Helping Hands seeks the ongoing fnancial support, vol-
unteer support, and prayer support of our community.
In a little more than one year, Helping Hands has ac-
quired a new building site, paid for the property, devel-
oped some talented people to assist in construction and
raised more than $28,000 toward their $150,000 goal.
Why does Helping Hands need a new facility? Many
reasons. Elderly volunteers must go up and down stairs
to get food. The layout is very ineffcient and most im-
portantly to fulfll the greater vision, a different facility
is very much needed so we can offer additional services
to our community.
Helping Hands is excited about the future and is ex-
cited about its second annual Miracle Sunday Service
that will be held June 10 in Ensley Park. More detail
will follow on this very important event in a couple of
weeks.
In the meantime, if you would like to offer your f-
nancial support to Helping Hands, your donations can
be made to PO Box 532 Howard City, MI 49329 or can
also be made through their web site at www.helping-
handshc.org.
Please specify whether you wish your offering to
be for the building fund or for general operations. Any
questions can be directed to (231) 937-6758

biomedical research experiences and results, and
Dean encouraged students to pursue one of the
numerous career opportunities in science. During
the presentation, Dean walked students through
typical experiments she conducts daily, culmi-

ready to celebrate event
In June of 1962, John F. Kennedy was serving our Country as
president, Ray Charles was mesmerizing audiences with his No. 1
Billboard Hit, I Cant Stop Loving You, and Al Kaline was chas-
ing balls in the outfeld for the Detroit Tigers with Ernie Harwell
in the booth announcing every game. This also was the same year
that the last class of Bulldogs would graduate from Howard City
High School. This year marks the semi-centennial of this event. The
former Howard City High School is located on the corner of Grant
and Edgerton streets in Howard City. In the fall of 1962, the build-
ing was renamed Tri County High School, upon consolidation with
Sand Lake High School. Through the years the building also would
serve as Tri County Middle School and most recently the Edgerton
Upper Elementary. The celebration for this landmark event is being
planned by the Howard City Alumni Association. The event will take
place at 6 p.m. on May 26 at Heritage United Methodist Church on
Kendaville Road in Pierson. The cost is $15 per person and reserva-
tions can be made by calling Vicky Paulen at (231) 937-5190.

product that will rise on this site will be a direct result
of the hard work put forth by the many people working
together for the beneft of the entire community.
The MCC Greenville campus will become a learning
destination for students pursing health careers. The col-
lege also will establish renewable energy studies in the
17,095-square-foot advanced technology center, which
is scheduled to open next summer. Other features will
include technology labs for advanced manufacturing
applications, fexible classrooms for access to univer-
sity-level courses, community areas featuring computer
stations for student and public use, inviting spaces to
conduct informal meetings and wireless high-speed In-
ternet connection.
We are building a more comprehensive campus in
Greenville, creating an enhanced learning environment
and increasing our capacity to serve area learners, Fer-
rentino said.
During her opening remarks, MCC Board of Trustees
Chairperson Karen Carbonelli offered a historical per-
spective of MCC. The college had humble beginnings as
a vision in 1963, which became a reality in 1965 when
voters approved to establish the college. Through the
years, the college has grown with the support of its part-
ners.
Were gathered today to celebrate the next step in
building a stronger future for Montcalm the ground-
breaking ceremony for what promises to be a dramatic
addition to MCCs expanding Greenville campus, Car-
bonelli said.
Ferrentino echoed Carbonellis sentiments and
thanked attendees for being part of this next exciting
chapter in the life of MCC.
During the course of our existence, MCC has served
more than 100,000 people who have desired greater lev-
els of education, more employment opportunities or just
increased personal knowledge related to a topic of in-
terest. We have never wavered from our commitment to
build a community of learners and the expansion of our
Greenville campus will build on that pledge long into the
future, Ferrentino said.
The college has been awarded up to $3 million in
state of Michigan capital outlay funds. With this invest-
ment, MCC, the MCC Foundation, and its philanthropic
partners are half way to funding a $5.4 million project,
which includes construction of the new building and
renovation to the existing Michigan Technical Education
Center (M-TEC) on the colleges Greenville campus.

Stage Door Players to present
Alabama Rain
In this engaging comedy, Heather McCutchen spins
a delightfully curious fable about fve sisters living in a
mythical town where it has not rained in 40 years, and
where time has come to a literal standstill. Monty Lous
been pregnant for 10 years: Pheenie, the oldest, has left
home and gone to see the ocean, walking the coast of
Florida as far as Cape Canaveral. When Laurie Laurie
(named after both her grandmothers) fnds out that
Pheenie has taken Mamas coat and left, she promptly
drops dead. However, her ornery spirit refuses to quiet
down until she has a proper burial, so she makes a
nuisance of herself from the top of an old magnolia tree.
rachel runs to fetch the Ouija board, and psychic little
dallas Ladean has a vision which she is determined will
save them all. This off-kilter comedy examines the perils
of a stagnant existence as the sisters thirst for growth,
each stubbornly battling the powerful force of the way
things have always been. Come and enjoy a fantastic
show.
The show opens at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 18, with
additional shows on May 19, 25 and 26 at the Stage Door
Theater, 1147 Wilcox, White Cloud. Tickets are $10 adult
and $8seniors and students.

8 RIVERVALLEYNEWSSHOPPERMONDAY,MAY21,2012
Now that spring is here, many hom-
eowners will start home improvement or
building projects indoors and out to spruce
up or increase the value of their homes.
The Michigan Department of Licensing
and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) reminds
consumers of important tips that will help
them avoid common and often costly
mistakes while building or renovating
their homes.
Verify a Builder/Contractor License
Selecting a properly licensed contrac-
tor is the frst and most important step in
making home improvements, said LARA
Director Steven H. Hilfnger. Ask to see a
copy of their license then take a few min-
utes to look up the license online or give
us a call. Those few minutes spent at the
beginning of the project may prevent big
problems later.
Residential Builders and Maintenance
and Alteration Contractors: An online li-
cense search is available at http://www.
michigan.gov/licenselookup or by calling
LARAs Bureau of Commercial Services Li-
censing Division at (517) 373-8376.
Contractors: Electricians, plumbers
and mechanical contractors are licensed by
LARAs Bureau of Construction Codes and
must have a license that corresponds to the
work to be done. Mechanical contractors
must also have the proper license classif-
cation. To verify license information visit
www.michigan.gov/bcclicense or call (517)
241-9313.
Online Referral and Advertising Sites
An Internet search for builders or con-
tractors will yield service provider referral
sites and advertising sites such as Craigslist.
Many of the ads will state that the individual
is licensed. Regardless of the source of the
referral, consumers should exercise caution
and not assume that these individuals are
licensed or that theyre reputable. Always
confrm that the builder or contractor is
properly licensed in the state of Michigan.
Dont Pay in Advance
Consumers should never give a contrac-
tor a large sum of money prior to work be-
ing done.
Consumers should never pay for the
entire job in advance or before their project
is completed, Hilfnger said. Customarily,
pay no more than one third of the total con-
tract price in advance.
Homeowners are inviting trouble if they
pay the full contract price amount at the
start of a job or prior to completion.
Pay in partial payments or installments
as different stages are completed, especial-
ly on large projects. This way, if the work
is not proceeding according to schedule,
the payments also are delayed. Pay only by
check or credit card, not cash. Before you
make that fnal payment, make sure the
job is complete, you have inspected and
approved the work, the job site has been
cleaned up, and the suppliers and contrac-
tors have been paid.
Dont Forget Your Permit.
Before starting a project, check with
your local or state building department to
determine if your project requires a permit.
A permit provides the legal permission to
start construction of a building project in
accordance with approved drawings and
specifcations.
Permits are required for:
nNew buildings
n Additions (bedrooms, bathrooms,
family rooms, etc.)
n Residential work (decks, garages,
fences, freplaces, pools, water heaters,
etc.)
n Renovations (garage conversions,
basement furnishings, kitchen expansions,
reroofng, etc.)
nElectrical systems
nPlumbing systems
n HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-
conditioning) systems
In todays economy, do-it-yourself
home improvement projects make fnancial
sense. But its important for homeowners
to remember that even if they do the work
themselves, they are responsible for obtain-
ing building permits too, Hilfnger said.
Checking with your local or state building
offcials ahead of time could save you costly
mistakes in the long run.
A permit ensures that the proposed
construction meets minimum safety stan-
dards and allows code offcials to protect
the public by reducing potential hazards of
unsafe construction. Property insurers may
not cover work done without permits and
inspections, so the value of the property
could be affected and problems may arise
when the property is sold.
Other important tips:
nGet three written estimates based on
the same work to make meaningful com-
parisons. Estimates should include detailed
job specifcations on the materials, labor,
timeline, and total charges for the work.
Dont automatically choose the lowest bid-
der.
n Ask for references. Talk to friends,
neighbors, or former customers who are
familiar with the contractors work, reli-
ability, and business practices. Ask former
customers to see their completed job, if
they were satisfed, and if they would use
the contractor again.
n Obtain a detailed written contract
that states exactly what work will be done,
the quality of the materials used, warran-
ties, start and completion dates, total cost
of the job, and a payment schedule. It will
provide clear expectations for you and the
contractor, and help avoid many of the
problems experienced by consumers. Make
sure you understand all of the terms. If you
dont, ask. Never sign a contract with blank
spaces. Know your cancellation rights.
n Protect yourself by asking the con-
tractor, subcontractor and suppliers for a
completed and signed waiver of lien form.
This will prevent a subcontractor or mate-
rial supplier from putting a lien on your
home if the contractor doesnt pay the bills.
This can happen even if you paid the con-
tract in full.
nMake sure your contractor is insured
and carries personal liability, workers
compensation, and property damage cov-
erage. Ask for copies of current insurance
certifcates. If the contractor is not properly
insured, you could be held liable for any in-
juries and damages that occur during the
project.
n Keep good records copies of the
contract, change orders and correspon-
dence.
Preventive Maintenance Protects Your
Investment
n Check the roof for any missing or
damaged shingles, fashing around the
chimney, foundation for any cracks, win-
dows and doors to identify or prevent wa-
ter damage from heavy spring rains. Check
gutters to ensure they are hanging properly
and are free of debris. Position downspouts
so they drain at least three feet away from
the foundation.
n Inspect plumbing and pipes to pre-
vent water damage inside the home. Check
around the base of the water heater for evi-
dence of any leaks. Make sure your sump
pump is operating properly.
n Inspect the electrical system, fuse
or circuit-breaker box for excessive wear
or tripped breakers. Make sure each cir-
cuit breaker is labeled with the location
it serves. Replace batteries as needed in
smoke detectors and inspect the gauges in
fre extinguisher(s).
n Change the air flters on your heat-
ing and cooling systems to clear away the
winter dust and ensure youll have fresh air
throughout your home.
n Check your deck for any damaged
wood, wobbly railings or stairs.

tion Codes at www.michigan.gov/bcc. To

New Slate of Candidates for the 5 positions on the
REYNOLDS TOWNSHIP BOARD
PLEASE VOTE AUGUST 7th
(Register to vote by July 9th at the Reynolds Township Ofce or Secretary of State Ofce)
Daniel J. Fisk - Township Supervisor
Hello, for those of you who dont know me, Im
Daniel J. Fisk, and at the urging of some of my
friends, business associates and many other
residents, I am announcing my candidacy for
Township Supervisor. I am a long time resident,
and a 1985 graduate of Tri County School. My
wife Sherry, also a Tri County graduate, represents the third
generation family (Kohn) living here. We have ve children. I
represent the second generation of the family business, Ron
Fisk Hardwoods, where I am co-owner.
As your Supervisor, I would work to create an atmosphere where
all residents and businesses are respected, and that our Town-
ship is conducive to growth and development. As a resident and
businessman I understand many of the challenges and opportu-
nities and would work hard to represent you.
If you have any suggestions, questions or concerns I would like
to hear from you. My phone number is 231-937-4050, and my
e-mail is sdzssne@frontier.com.
I would appreciate your consideration in the August 7th primary
election.
Respectfully, Daniel J. Fisk

Robin Sholty - Township Clerk
Although I worked at the Lansing State Journal
for 30 years, I was born and raised in small towns.
My career at the Journal included responsibilities
involving hiring, training, budgeting, purchasing,
accounts payable, advertising, promotions, and
general ofce management. In addition, my
husband Craig and I owned and operated a small business in a
rural community. Because of my small town roots, Craig and I have
found Reynolds Township to be a warm community, and see great
potential for its future. I believe my past experience and my interest
in local government will allow me to serve you, the residents of our
Township.
In discussing my candidacy with other township residents, a reoc-
curring comment was that the township hours of 10 am - 2 pm four
days a week (closed Wednesday) left no convenient accessibility
to conduct business. If elected, I would be at the ofce for your
convenience, beginning with evening hours from 5 - 7 every other
Thursday, and would expand days and hours as needed. There
would be no misunderstanding; I work for you, the taxpayer. I wel-
come the opportunity to answer questions or hear your concerns.
My e-mail address is rsholty@ymail.com.
I would appreciate your vote at the August 7th Primary.
Respectfully, Robin Sholty
Jan Stevens - Township Treasurer
My husband Rich and I are no strangers to
most of you in Reynolds Township, having been
born and raised here. We are both graduates
of Tri County School. Rich has been a builder
and real estate businessman for 40 years. We
have been very active in local government
during that time. I graduated from Ferris with
a BS in accounting. I have done accounting and tax work for
the Salvation Army and Guardsman Chemical Company. I was
an Administrative Assistant at the Amway Grand Plaza and Pro-
gressive Engineering, and also Administrative Assistant to the
Vice President of store operations for MC Sports. I served on
the Howard City planning commission, serving one term as its
chairman.
My extensive experience in accounting and leadership along with
my desire to work with people, I believe, make me a qualied
candidate for Reynolds Township Treasurer.
I ask you to vote for me in the August 7th election.
Respectfully, Jan Stevens
Aaron Kindel - Township Trustee
I am Aaron Kindel, and I am announcing my
candidacy for Township Trustee.
I have worked in the family business, Arks
Electric for 22 years, starting at the age of
fteen. A Tri County graduate (1993), my wife
Ann and I have three children.
As a businessman, resident and taxpayer of the township, my
experiences have helped me prepare for this position. If elected,
I will be your voice, express your concerns and I will manage the
affairs of the township in the best interest of the community.
I ask for your vote in the August 7th Primary.
Respectfully, Aaron Kindel
Willet (Bill) Smith -
Township Trustee
I grew up in the family grocery business,
Smiths IGA on Main Street in Howard City
which my parents, Willet and Zora Smith
operated for 30 years. My dad, a World
War II veteran also served on the Village
Council and other civic groups during this time.
I graduated from Howard City High School before going to work
for Meijer where I spent the next 42 years before retiring as
Group Vice President in charge of marketing and advertising. I
served as Treasurer and a member of the Reynolds Township
Board for 13 years. Having lived in both the village and township
almost all of my life, I know the community and the people.
I would do my best to use my experiences in township govern-
ment and business to work on your behalf.
I ask you to consider me in the August 7th Primary.
Respectfully, Willet Smith

According to a 2011 University of Michigan
study led by researcher Taylor Eagle, unhealthy
eating behaviors that lead to weight gain and
childhood obesity are much more likely among
children from lower-income households.
Fat adults. Its not news. America is a top tier
nation whose citizens are, by percentage, lets
just say it, morbidly obese. Fat. An extra 15
pounds on a 5 9 frame isnt what were talk-
ing about. Were talking people who are 50, 70,
150(!) pounds overweight. Look around. Tell
me you dont know 5 guys whose bellies ap-
pear at the corner a full two seconds before the
rest of their bodies round the bend? Adults are
doing something about it. But what about those
kids?
Poor kids. Theres some truth in every reason
overweight people use as an excuse for be-
ing overweight (I have my own). But the U
of M study found that as household income
declined, eating fried food every day doubled
(!), daily TV time tripled (!), vegetable con-
sumption declined, exercise diminished, poor
diet increased, and the percent of overweight
children increased. Read that sentence again
its astounding. The study compared socioeco-
nomic status and health-related behaviors of
children. The habits of 999 sixth graders from
four Michigan communities: Ann Arbor, Co-
runna, Detroit and Ypsilanti, were included.
Start xing the problem. Since its not just
poor kids suffering the symptoms, a solution
that includes education, the public assistance
system, and the cook, seems a good choice.
In school. School-based programs like Project
Healthy Schools, a program for sixth-graders in
Ann Arbor designed to reduce childhood obesi-
ty and its long-term health risks, show remark-
able success. Project Healthy Schools (http://
www.projecthealthyschools.org/) teaches
healthy lifestyle habits. Healthy lifestyles in
childhood lead to healthier adults, having less
diabetes and chronic illnesses, less risk of car-
diovascular disease (heart problems). I love this
report from a parent of one of the students:
my 6th grader is now Miss Healthy Eater. She
wont let me drive near a fast food restaurant.
She reads labels all the time, eats lots of salads
and fruits and never hesitates to comment on
the eating habits of mom, dad and little sister.
(Youre going to eat THAT??!!)
So support your own schools efforts at edu-
cating about good health, and minimizing the
availability of fat, our, and sugar loaded food
at meal time.
Buy healthy, assist with a Bridge. Everyone
loves fresh fruit, fresh veggies. And theyre
so much cheaper at farmers markets. So
urge your farmers markets to accept Michigan
Bridge Cards, the cards that people receiving
assistance use for buying groceries. Its a triple
benet when a farmers market provides fresh,
healthy, local food, puts local farmers to work,
keeps some of the prot local, and accepts
Michigan Bridge Cards so people of lower in-
come level who most need it benet. The
Fulton Street Market in Grand Rapids, at 1147
East Fulton, takes them. There is information
for your farmers market at www.michigan.
gov, or inquire at www.fultonstreetmarket.
org for help. Make it happen.

Osteoporosis in the News
I have just started to write a series of articles on the head, headaches, etc., but something has come up that needs attention.
Osteoporosis is a serious health issue that causes lots of suffering and may compromise ones overall health leading to death earlier
than expected. This week in the news and in The American Medical Association Journal important information has come to light.
Bone is dynamic. It is constantly being broken down and rebuilt. Somewhat like a home that needs maintenance, repair and
remodeling all the time. The current medical treatment for osteoporosis is use of Fosamax, Actonel, and Boniva. These medications
work by replacing part of the bone with an inert material which delays the break down of bone thereby slowing Osteoporosis
(They do not build new bone). The unfortunate part of this treatment is that it is likely to cause a serious bone condition called
Osteonecrosis. This means dead bone. The problem lays in the fact that this inert (dead) material may make the bones more britt le
over time. The worse news is that this inert material can stay in the bone for 18 months up to 10 years.
Up until now the recommendation was to start these medications as soon as possible to prevent osteoporosis. The word
Osteopenia was actually invented by one of the drug companies to identify individuals who were at risk for osteoporosis so they
could start using the medications sooner. Now the new information is that starting too early or staying on the medications for more
than ve years increases the risk of fractures, especially ones that have difculty healing.
For the last ve years we have been warning people about the use of these medications. Natural treatment for Osteoporosis must
included exercise. I once saw a 14 year old boy with osteoporosis in his leg after a fractured leg prevented walking for six weeks.
After just four weeks of walking, the bone was again normal.
Elimination of acid-producing foods (pork, pop, sugars, corn syrup, oranges, dairy products, potatoes, and tomatoes) is a must
for treatment and prevention of Osteoporosis. An interesting statistic is that the three countries with the highest milk and dairy
product consumption (USA, Australia, and Sweden) also have the highest Osteoporosis rates. Humm. Pasteurized, homogenized
milk contains something called Xanthane Oxidase which is very acidic. Raw milk or cultured milk products are better. It takes 400mg
of Calcium to neutralize the acidity in one cup of coffee. An acidic environment in our body speeds up the break down of bone.
Calcium citrate, 400-500 mg with Magnesium 200-250 mg, two or three times per day gives adequate
absorbable calcium. Vitamin D3, 2000-4000 units per day, is needed for healthy bone. There are many skeletal
support products on the market for additional minerals. Bio-plasma is a combination of 12 Cell Salts, all of
which support structural tissues. Homeopathic Symphytum 30 C, one per week, will help heal any micro-
fractures that are occurring. Homeopathic Calcerea Carbonicum 6C one per day with Herbal Hydrangea 2-3
times per day will reduce bone spurs and enhance the deposition of calcium into the bone. All of these
things support the natural production of bone and none interfere with normal physiology of bone. We have
had patients do the natural treatments and show from 3% up to 29% improvement in bone density in one
year.
If you are on the traditional medications, do not just stop them. Instead talk with your own doctor and
create a plan. Consider using the natural supplements and dietary changes to x this important health issue.
