A. Reading Comprehension Section In the Reading Comprehension Section you will read several passages.

Each one is followed by a number of questions about it. You are to choose the one best answer, (A), (B), (C), or (D) to each question. A popular theory explaining the evolution of the universe is known as the Big Bang Model. According to the model, at some time between ten and twenty billion years ago, all present matter and energy were compressed into a small ball only a few kilometers in diameter. It was, in effect, an atom that contained in the form of pure energy all of the components of the entire universe. Then at a moment in time that astronomers refer to as T = 0, the ball exploded, hurling the energy into space. Expansion occurred. As the energy cooled, the most of it became matter in the form of protons, neutrons, and electrons. These original particles combined to form hydrogen and helium, and continued to expand. Matter formed into galaxies with stars and planets. 1. Which sentence below best summarizes this passage? (A) The Big Bang theory does not account for the evolution of the universe. (B) According to the Big Bang Model, an explotions caused the formation of the universe. (C) The Universe is made of hydrogen and helium. (D) The universe is more than ten billion years old. According to this passage, when were the galaxies formed? (A) Ten billion years ago. (B) Fifteen billion years ago (C) At T = 0 (D) Twenty billion years ago The environment before the Big Bang is described as all of the following, EXCEPT? (A) compressed matter (B) Energy (C) All the components of the universe (D) Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons The word compressed in line 3 could best be replaced by? (A) Excited (B) Balanced (C) Reduced (D) Controled The word it in line 6 refers to? (A) Energy (B) Space (C) Expansion (D) Matter

The practice of signing and numbering individual prints was introduced by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, the nineteenth century artist best known for the painting of his mother, called Arrangement in Grey and Black, but known to most of us as Whistler's Mother. Whistler's brotherin-law, Sir Francis Seymour Haden, a less well-known artist, had speculated that collectors might find prints more attractive if they knew that there were only a limited number of copies produced. By signing the work in pencil, an artis could guarantee and personalize each print. As soon as Whistler and Haden began signing and numbering their prints, their work began to increase in value. When other artis noticed that the signed prints encouraged higher price, they began copying the practice. Although most prints are signed on the right-hand side in the margin below the image, the placement of the signature is a matter of personal choice. Indeed, prints have been signed within the image, in any of the margins, or even on the reverse side of the print. Whereever the artist elects to sign it, a signed print is still valued above an unsigned one, even in the same edition. 6. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? (A) Whistler's Mother (B) Whistler's Greatest Works (C) The Practice of Signing Prints (D) Copying Limited Edition Prints What made Whistler's work more valuable? (A) His fame as an artist (B) His painting of his mother (C) His signature on the prints (D) His brother-in-law's prints The author mentions all of the following as reasons why a collector prefers a signed print, EXCEPT (A) It guarantees the print's authenticity. (B) It makes the print more personal. (C) It encourages higher price for the print. (D) It limits the number of copies of the print. The word speculated in line 4 could best be replaced by (A) guessed (B) noticed (C) denied (D) announced It can be inferred from the passge that artists number their prints (A) as an accounting procedure (B) to guarantee a limited edition (C) when the buyer requests it (D) at the same place on each of the prints they produce

Whether one is awake or asleep, the brain emits electrical waves. During wakefulness, the waves are recorded at about ten small waves per second. With the onset of sleep, the waves become larger and slower. The largest, slowest waves occur during the first three hours of sleep. Mental activity slows down but does not stop. In fact, if awakened from slow-wave sleep, a person can often remember vague thoughts tha occurred during that period of sleep. During sleep, intervals of small, fast waves also occur. These waves are similar to those experienced while awake. The eyes move rapidly, and it appears to the observer that the sleeper is watching some event. Sleepers who are awakened during this rapid-eye-movement sleep will often recall the details of dreams they have been having. Sleep of this kind is called dreaming sleep or rapideye-movement sleep, also known as REM sleep. In period of eight hours, most sleepers experience from three to five instances REM sleep. Each instance lasts from five to thirty minutes with an interval of at least ninety minutes between each one. Later instances of REM sleep are usually of longer duration than are instances earlier in the eight-hour period. People who suffer sleep deprivation experience fatigue, irritability, and loss of concentration. Sleep is essential because it generates the brain and the nervous system. Slow-wave sleep may be especially helpful in restoring muscle control, whereas REM sleep may be more important for mental activity. It appears that both kinds of sleep are necessary, and the recuperation of sleep of one kind will not compensate for a lack of the other kind of sleep. 11. What is the author's main purpose in the passage? (A) To describe REM sleep (B) To explain sleep deprivation (C) To discuss the two types of sleep (D) To recommend an increase in the number of hours of sleep How many times per night do most sleepers experience REM sleep? (A) Eight (B) Three to five (C) Five to thirty (D) Ninety The author mentions all the following as characteristics of REM sleep, EXCEPT (A) vague thoughts (B) smaller brain waves (C) eye movements (D) dreams The word vague in line 5 could best be replaced by (A) familiar (B) indefinite (C) unpleasant (D) detailed The word it in line 16 refers to (A) deprivation (B) the brain (C) sleep (D) concentration (15 Marks)
