School Trip

Miss Hunter has organised a school trip to Paris for all the Primary Five pupils! She needs your help to decide which flights to book.

Activity Notes Present the problem to the children orally as well as providing them with the pupil sheet. The first part of the problem will give pupils confidence in counting on time. As a whole class, discuss possible methods of counting on 50 minutes. Pupils may suggest counting on in 5s or 10s. Pupils may use their geared clocks to help them. More able pupils may decide to work out the problem without practical apparatus. Ask pupils to record their answer. Why is it important that we write our answer down? Pupils should understand that this is a two step problem. For the second part of the problem: What do we need to find out? Pupils may tell you that they need to find out if they have enough to get Flight A or Flight B.

Think, Pair and Share: ask pupils how to talk to their partner about how they might go about finding this out? What time will you need to check in at? Will you be able to get flight A? Depending on their previous experience of problem solving pupils might require more or fewer prompts at this stage of the lesson. Ask pupils to suggest possible reasons why they might choose not to take Fight A or Flight B. With their partner ask pupils to decide: which flight do you think would be the best to take? Allow the pupils to work out the Bonus problem individually and independently. Ask pupils to check their answer before they finish. In the plenary to the lesson, pupils will talk about how they found the answer to the bonus problem. Is there more than one way of finding the solution?
