STREETS

Lighting Science Group (LSG) has harnessed the power of green technology to create energy efficient and optically superior street lighting systems. Highly efficient lighting combined with the long life of LEDs offer significant long term savings, specifically in terms of reduced energy and maintenance costs. When compared to traditional HID sources, LSGs LED street luminaires reduce energy consumption and provide uniform light distribution and increased light level.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE

The RoadMaster breaks the paradigm of LED roadway lighting by delivering specification features and performance at a breakthrough value.
The RoadMaster provides a one-for-one replacement for 50-150W HID roadway installations. With over a 50% reduction in energy costs, the RoadMaster offers significant energy-savings over its operating life. By avoiding the high maintenance costs associated with high pressure sodium or metal halide HID roadway systems, the RoadMaster pays for itself after the avoidance of one lamp replacement, and over its rated life it will avoid a total of 4-6 lamp changes.

Wind Loading
It is important when selecting an outdoor luminaire that care and thought be given to the pole assembly. Proper selection is critical to prevent potential overstressing of the pole that could create a risk of it falling. Evaluation should include weight load of fixtures and mounting brackets, the total EPA (Effective Projected Area) of the assembly and wind velocity of the installation area. Lighting Science Group does not manufacture or sell poles. The AASHTO 2009 wind map is provided as reference to determine requirements in different areas of the country. Some areas may have special wind zone requirements where steady wind conditions may create harmonic vibration. These areas may require additional vibration dampers installed in the poles. If unsure about local requirements, check with the local building department.

Light Distributions
Luminaire distributions are defined by IESNA based on five basic classifications that portray the transverse distribution pattern of the luminaire. These classifications can be used as a guide in starting design but generally are not used to define project parameters or comparisons. Type I The Type I distribution is great for applications that are narrow but need farther side-toside throw such as walkways, bike paths and sidewalks. These types of products are designed to be placed at or near the center of the pathway. Type II The Type II distribution is generally used in applications that require good side-to-side throw but need more forward light due to wider coverage areas. Type II distributions are often used for entrance roadways, smaller side streets, on ramps and wide walkways. Type III The Type III distribution fits applications that require wide cover areas to the front and side. These are often used in wider roadways and parking areas. Type IV (Forward Throw) The Type IV distribution produces a semicircular distribution with more light forward of the luminaire. It is used in applications where the light is mounted on the wall or the perimeter of a property. Type V The Type V distribution is used in applications that require an even illumination over a wide area such as large commercial parking areas. These luminaires are typically mounted in the center of a large area or intersection. Shielding or Spill Control Some applications may require that the light be reduced or eliminated behind the pole at a set distance. In these applications, additional shielding can be ordered and installed on the luminaire to meet these requirements.

TM -15 BUG Rating

TM-1 is a technical memorandum from the IESNA that 5 replaced the old cutoff classification system. The BUG (Backlight, Uplight, Glare) rating helps define the light distribution in standardized solid angles. The Luminaire classification system in TM1 5-07 helps classify a luminaires photometric performance as it relates to light trespass, sky glow and glare. This system provides a comparison of luminaire performance but it should not be only metric used. A detailed lighting evaluation of the lighting performance should be done to look at the total system performance.

TM -21
Is a technical memorandum for the IESNA that provides a method for estimating LED lifetime projections based on LM-80 data. This applies to the lifetime projection of a LED package, array or module and not to an entire luminaire. A complete luminaire has several variables that impact lifetime (driver, optics, heat and design). Meaningful lifetime projections has to take into account all of these variables.

LM -80

An approved standard for measuring lumen maintenance of LED packages, arrays and modules and various temperatures and operating currents. Measurements are provided at a minimum of 6,000 hours and at a minimum of 1,000-hour increments.

ARRA
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), is an economic stimulus package that provided $787 billion to fund a wide range of tax cuts and spending for education, health care, energy and infrastructure. Section 1605 contains Buy American requirements within the ARRA. Lighting Science PROLIFIC and RoadMaster luminaires were designed, developed and assembled in the United States, and thus qualify as manufactured in the United States under the Buy American requirements.

Municipal Solid State Lighting Consortium (MSSLC)

Organization of municipalities, utilities and energy efficiency organizations that share technical information and experiences related to LED street lighting. Offers several resources for evaluating projects and developed model specification for LED roadway lighting projects.

ENERGY STAR

International Dark Sky Association (IDA)

International Dark Sky Associations mission is to preserve and protect the nighttime environment through the use of environmentally responsible outdoor lighting meet the IDA requirements. Lighting Science Prolific and RoadMaster luminaires are IDA approved luminaires.

Energy Star is a voluntary labeling program of the EPA and DOE that identifies energy efficient products. Products that meet minimum federal standards in a category may display the Energy Star label. Energy Star focuses mainly on consumer products and does not apply to roadway applications. Those products are generally qualified under DLC.

Lighting Facts
The LED Lighting Facts is a program of the U.S. Department of Energy that provides a standardized summary of verifiable product data based on industry standards for measurement. The main purpose to allow retailers, utilities and buyers to compare products used for general illumination. Luminaire manufacturers who take the pledge agree to use the label to disclose performance results in five areaslumens, efficacy, watts, correlated color temperature (CCT), and color rendering index (CRI)as measured by the industry standard for testing photometric performance, IES LM-79-2008

Design Light Consortium (DLC)

A collaboration of utility companies and regional efficiency organizations that is committed to raising awareness of the benefits of efficient lighting in commercial buildings. DLC qualifies LED products that are currently not covered under ENERGY STAR that are used by program administrators to help them decide products to include in their energy efficiency programs. Lighting Science has many qualified DLC products and continue to test and add to the list.
