MOULDED BASIC SHAPES
PREFACE
This standard was prepared under the authority of the Plastics Industry Standards
Committee and is one of a series of standards relating to PTFE products.
A preliminary draft was prepared by the National Fluorocarbon Division of the Plastics
Institute of Australia. In preparing the standard cognizance was taken of
BS 3873:1965, Polytetrafluoroethylene Moulded Basic Shapes.

The standard specifies the classification and composition of the mouldings, finish, and
physical and electrical requirements.

(Specific Gravity) of Plastics excluding Cellular Plastics*
* In course of preparation.
3 AS 1197—1973
2 DEFINITION. For the purposes of this specification moulded basic shapes are
straight, parallel sided moulded components of normally circular or annular
cross-section.
NOTE: It is recommended that purchasing specif ications should refer to the above classifi cati ons in their
orders.
NOTES:
1. PTFE mouldings do not absorb moisture so a humidity requir ement is not specif ied.
2. PTFE undergoes a transit ion duri ng which there is a signif icant volume change in the materi al. The
majori ty of this change occurs between 19° and 20°C.
6 APPEARANCE AND FINISH. The colour of the mouldings may vary from
white to mottled grey and the mouldings shall be free from obvious surface defects and
inclusions that could affect their serviceability.
