Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australi an Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications, new editi ons
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head off ice of Standards Australia,
are welcomed. Noti fi cati on of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard should be made

PREFACE

This standard was prepared under the authority of the Plastics Industry Standards
Committee and is one of a series of standards relating to PTFE products.

A preliminary draft was prepared by the National Fluorocarbon Division of the Plastics
Institute of Australia. In preparing the standard cognizance was taken of
BS 3873:1965, Polytetrafluoroethylene Moulded Basic Shapes.

The standard specifies the classification and composition of the mouldings, finish, and
physical and electrical requirements.

This standard may require reference to the following standards:

AS 1145 Method for the Determination of Tensile Properties of Plastics

Materials

AS 1193 Method for the Determination of the Density and Relative Density
(Specific Gravity) of Plastics excluding Cellular Plastics*

AS 1255 Methods of Test for electrical Characteristics of Solid Plastics

Insulating Materials*

ASTM D1708 Method of Test for Tensile Properties of Plastics by use of

Microtensile Specimens

* In course of preparation.

1 SCOPE. This specification applies to moulded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTE)

basic shapes other than sheet, for mechanical, electrical and chemical applications.

2 DEFINITION. For the purposes of this specification moulded basic shapes are
straight, parallel sided moulded components of normally circular or annular
cross-section.

3 COMPOSITION. The moulded basic shapes shall be manufactured from

unpigmented, PTFE resin and shall be free from any foreign material.

4 CLASSIFICATION. PTFE moulded basic shapes shall be classified as follows:

Grade A — premium quality moulded basic shapes of which the properties

shall comply with the grade A requirements of Table 1.

Grade B — general purpose moulded basic shapes of which the properties

shall comply with the Grade B requirements of Table 1.

Class 1 — Grade A or B moulded basic shapes conforming to the

dimensional stability requirements of Clause 13.

Class 2 — Grade A or B moulded basic shapes without specific requirements

for dimensional stability.

NOTE: It is recommended that purchasing specif ications should refer to the above classifi cati ons in their
orders.

5 CONDITIONING. Samples for test shall be conditioned for 24 h at 23 ±2°C.

NOTES:

1. PTFE mouldings do not absorb moisture so a humidity requir ement is not specif ied.

2. PTFE undergoes a transit ion duri ng which there is a signif icant volume change in the materi al. The
majori ty of this change occurs between 19° and 20°C.

6 APPEARANCE AND FINISH. The colour of the mouldings may vary from
white to mottled grey and the mouldings shall be free from obvious surface defects and
inclusions that could affect their serviceability.
