PREFACE

This standard was prepared under the authority of the Plastics Standards Board and is
one of a series relating to PTFE products.

It is based on BS 4375:1968, Unsintered PTFE Tape for Thread Sealing Applications,

and applies to tape used for thread sealing for use at temperatures up to 250°C but the
tape may also be used for general engineering applications.
This is a free 5 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

Attention is drawn to Clause 7 in which it is pointed out that the tape may not be
suitable for use in certain critical applications, e.g. where contact with high
concentrates of gaseous or liquid oxygen is involved.

This standard may require reference to the following standards:

AS K136 Soxhlet Extractors

AS B53 Pipe Threads

BS 1752 Laboratory Sintered or Fritted Filters

BS 3245 Jointing Compound for use in Liquefied Petroleum Gas Applications and
Installations.

1 SCOPE. This specification applies to unsintered PTFE tape of preferred width

12 mm and preferred thickness 0.075 mm for use as a pipe thread sealing material and
in similar applications (but see Note to Clause 7).

2 COMPOSITION.

2.1 Manufacture. Unsintered PTFE tape shall be manufactured from a suitable

grade of PTFE and shall not contain fillers or additives other than residual lubricant
(see Clause 7).

2.2 Lubricant. The lubricant used in the manufacture of the tape shall be such that
any residue left in the tape will be entirely removed under the conditions of test for
the determination of residual lubricant content (see Appendix C).

3 CONDITIONING OF SAMPLES. Samples for test shall be conditioned for

24 hours at 23 ±2°C.

NOTES:

1. PTFE undergoes a transit ion duri ng which there is a signifi cant volume change in the material. The
majori ty of this change occurs between 19 and 20°C.

2. PTFE does not absorb moisture so no requir ement for control of humidit y is requir ed.

4 APPEARANCE AND FINISH.

4.1 Appearance. The unsintered tape, when viewed by reflected light, shall appear
white.

4.2 Defects. The tape shall be free from obvious inclusions and shall not show any
surface or edge defects which may affect its suitability for use.

5 THREAD WRAPPING PROPERTIES. When wrapped in accordance with the

method described in Appendix A, the tape shall not break and the finishing end of tape
shall remain in position with no tendency to unwind.
