Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are subject
to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editi ons as necessary. It is
important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest edit ion, and any
amendments thereto.
Full detail s of all Australian Standards and related publi cati ons wil l be found in the Standards Australi a
Catalogue of Publi cati ons; this informati on is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The Australi an
Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publi cati ons, new edit ions
and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggesti ons for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head offi ce of Standards Australi a,
are welcomed. Notif ication of any inaccuracy or ambiguit y found in an Australi an Standard should be made
without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

Hose and hose assemblies for

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee on Industrial Hose,
under the direction of the Multitechnics Standards Policy Board, to supersede
AS 1335 —1974, Hose and hose assemblies for general purpose gas welding and allied
processes.
The objective of this Standard is to ensure the safety of personnel when using hose and
hose assemblies in the welding and cutting industries.
This Standard differs from the 1974 edition in the following respects:
(a) A minimum, rather than a maximum, working pressure of 1.2 MPa is specified.
(b) Minimum dynamic bend radius values have been included.
(c) Requirements for ignitability and flame propagation characteristics of the hose have
been included.
This is a free 6 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

(d) Requirements for ozone resistance have been included.

(e) Requirements for hose and fitting compatibility have been clarified.
(f) Requirements for twin hose have been included.
(g) The colour of hose covers for oxygen has been designated blue, and that for air,
nitrogen, carbon dioxide and argon has been designated black, in keeping with the
International scene. However, this colour coding is in conflict with that specified in
AS 4267 —1995, Pressure regulators for use with industrial compressed gas
cylinders, which specifies black for oxygen and blue for non-combustible gases.
The Standard differs from ISO 3821, Welding— Rubber hoses for welding cutting and
allied processes, in the following areas:
(a) Requirements for minimum dynamic bend radius of hose and for hose and fitting
compatibility are included.
(b) The value for tensile strength and elongation at break, after accelerated ageing for
96 h, is specified as not more than ±35 percent from the corresponding unaged
values for both lining and cover.
(c) The marking requirements are different.
(d) This Standard specifies a minimum rated working pressure of 1.2 MPa whereas
ISO 3821 recognizes two types of hose with different minimum rated working
pressures up to 2 MPa.
The terms ‘normative’ and ‘informative’ have been used in this Standard to define the
application of the appendix to which they apply. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral
part of a Standard, whereas an ‘informative’ appendix is only for information and
guidance.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian Standard
Hose and hose assemblies for welding,
cutting and allied processes

S E C T I O N 1 S CO P E A N D G E NE R A L

1.1 SCOPE This Standard sets out requirements for hose and hose assemblies for use
in the welding, cutting and allied processes. The hose and hose assemblies have a
minimum rated working pressure of 1.2 MPa for conveying acetylene, oxygen, liquefied
petroleum gases (LPGs) and mixtures of methylacetylene and propadiene (MPS), nitrogen
and other non-combustible inert shielding gases such as argon and carbon dioxide.
This is a free 6 page sample. Access the full version at http://infostore.saiglobal.com.

NOTES:
1 Appendix A gives guidelines and advice on information which should be supplied by the
purchaser at the time of placing an enquiry or order.
2 AS 1869 specifies hoses for LPG for transport, automotive, industrial and domestic
applications.
3 A hose assembly refers to a hose with fittings.
4 The term ‘allied processes’ refers in particular to heating, brazing and metallization.
5 Acetylene and LPG hoses are not interchangeable because of different compatibility
requirements.
