Mary Liz Menking

Lindsey and I won the Top Scholar Award in junior high and thats when I think we both realized that we were capable of doing a lot. I was like Oh man I have to write a speech now, Kuck responded with a laugh. Ive kind of known for a while so it wasnt a surprise, but of course I was happy and proud. Lindseys achievement marks the second time in as many years a member of the Kuck family was Class Sal. Her sister, Katie, earned the honor last year at GHS. I guess its like a family tradition now, said Kuck. In addition to spending

Menking said. Its all I can really see myself doing. Ive always loved little kids and helping them, Kuck said. Ive taught during Vacation Bible School at my church before and its exciting to see their faces when they learn something. Its just a wonderful feeling to know that youve put that smile on their face. Both girls are also daughters of A&M graduates. Their fathers earned their degrees in College Station. Since my dad went there, Ive grown up being an Aggie, Menking said. I love it. Whenever I visit the campus, I feel like Im home. Ive always loved the

Similar actions will generally produce similar results. Thats the case this year for the two top graduates at Gonzales High School. Mary Liz Menking and Lindsey Kuck have earned the prestigious titles of Valedictorian and Salutatorian of the Class of 2012. They are the daughters of Glenn and Sarah Menking, and Michael and Barbara Kuck. Of course I was definitely excited because Ive been working really hard for four years now, said Menking about her reaction when she learned the news.

time working hard on their academics, both girls are heavily involved in extracurricular activities. Menking has been a drum major of the Fighting Apache Band for the last two years, where she plays french horn. Kuck became president of the 4H Club this year after serving as its secretary. Both girls are also members of the Anchor Club, Future Scientists Club, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), National Honor Society, Leo Club and the Interact Club where Kuck is president and Menking is vice president. You have to set aside time for each thing you have and hope it works

out, said Kuck explaining her time management strategy. I know I havent been able to give as much of myself as I wanted to each club Im a part of. Its hard, Menking said. You lose sleep a lot, thats for sure. You just have to know whats important and what needs to get done first. The duo, who are best friends, has enjoyed spending so much time together in the past that theyve decided to do so in the future. Both will be attending Texas A&M University, where they will major in Interdisciplinary Studies in hopes of teaching one day. I grew up a teachers kid so I know what its like,

tradition and the family feeling you get when youre there, said Kuck. When youre around another Aggie, you just automatically bond. While both girls are excited about what the future holds, they readily admit graduation will be a bittersweet moment. Its been fun going to school here, Menking said. Im sad to see it end, but I guess its time to move on. All four years I said I was going to be ready to leave, but I think Im definitely going to miss this when Im gone, Kuck said. Especially all of the people that I see everyday that Im not going to get to see anymore.

Graduation day is an important milestone. Many noted people have waxed eloquent on the subject of graduation. If you are looking for a famous graduation quote to fuel the fire within you, try a few these: Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. Ralph Waldo Emerson A man who has never gone to school

may steal from a freight car; but if he has a university education, he may steal the whole railroad. Theodore Roosevelt Study hard; and you might grow up to be President. But lets face it: Even then, youll never make as much money as your dog. George Bush The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future. Plato

Famous Graduation Quotes

From kindergarten to graduation, I went to public schools, and I know that they are a key to being sure that every child has a chance to succeed and to rise in the world. Dick Cheney A professor is someone who talks in someone elses sleep. W. H. Auden I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. Mark Twain

Life is my college. May I graduate well, and earn some honors! Louisa May Alcott Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing worth knowing can be taught. Oscar Wilde Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you. Ralph Waldo Emerson

New study shows the value of high school diploma

Cannon News Services A high school diploma is touted as the bare minimum students need to achieve. And now a new study ties the financial value of high school graduation to the Austin regions economy. The Alliance for Excellent Education, a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit focused on improving national graduation rates, has released a study detailing the effects on Austins regional economy if the amount of high school dropouts was cut in half with benefits reaching into the millions. Its estimated that in the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area, some 6,100 students dropped out of the class of 2010. The alliance says the region, home to 45 schools, is one of the lowest performing in the nation, with 28 percent of high school students failing to graduate on time and with a regular diploma. But what if that number was cut in half? Those 3,050 extra graduates would earn up to $38 million more annually than they would without a diploma, the alliance finds. With that extra income, those grads would be able to spend an estimated $28 million extra, and invest an additional $10 million. The group would ultimately spend an extra $59 million on home purchases, and $2.4 million annually on vehicles. This influx of spending would be enough to support as many as 300 new jobs, and would expand the regions gross regional product by as much as $52 million once those new graduates were firmly settled in their career fields. The increased wages and spending of the group would generate an additional $3.4 million in local tax revenue during an average year. Nationally, more than 7,000 students drop out of high school every day, meaning that more than 1 million students dont graduate each year. As of January 2011, the unemployment rate of high school dropouts was more than twice the rate of those who had graduated. However, the alliance emphasizes that graduating is not just beneficial to the students, but also to the surrounding community. In doing the economic analysis, most individuals seem to understand that when an individual earns a high school diSTUDY, Page E7

An honest and open letter to graduating high schoolers

Cannon News Services Dear graduating senior, I am begging your pardon for a somber reflection amid the joy of accomplishment: not to be a wet rag on the festivities of graduation, but a bright light on the realities of post-secondary education. If you are going on to a state university, your GPA is 3.5 or better, your ACT or SAT score is at the 70th percentile placing you in the top 30 percent of current test-takers and as you enter the university this year, about 56 percent of students with similar qualifications will graduate in four years. Whats surprising about this number is that its not higher, closer to 85 percent or 90 percent. But college is tough. That is what you pay for. On the other hand, if youre going to a university with a more typical 2.8 GPA and are at the 45th percentile on the ACT or SAT, the likelihood of finishing in four years drops to well below 50 percent. These are not great odds. Not like the odds you carried to high school when graduation was nearly guaranteed. Show up and win. It wouldnt surprise you that if you are well-prepared for college study a good GPA, ACT/SAT score and class rank in the top 50 percent you are more likely to succeed, whether on borrowed funds or on your dime. But access does not equal success. Nearly two out of three students on the way to a baccalaureate degree borrow money. This is troubling. While the high school experience appears to be free, unless of course you pay taxes, the university experience is not. Additionally, the dropout rate for those who take loans is nearly 23 percent. Imagine taking out a car note and never being able to drive it, or buying a house that you can never eat or sleep in. If you havent posted a good academic performance in high school, dont believe a university, its leadership, advertisements or admissions officers who co-sign your promissory note with no responsibility for its payment obligation. They need paying students. Stoking a deceitful dream on life support an underappreciated, overfinanced, media-hyped charade is the real deception, and the weight falls on your back, not theirs. A shameful, elaborate sham, when one out of two college graduates this year are unemployable in their chosen field. Look carefully at the costs and benefits of a university education. University officials may not tell you the truth: Enrollments could drop. Bankers will not tell you the truth: Interest income will fall off. Elected officials will not tell you the truth: Elections will be lost. Listen to those really concerned for you carefully. If you choose to attend a second-best university, you may be lulled into thinking that your chances for graduation will improve significantly. Not true. You will find, at good mid-major institutions and many teachers colleges, that highquality faculty demand energy, interest, intellectual acuity and classroom performance, and if you havent exhibited them in high school, the likelihood that you will spontaneously develop them amid the distractions of university is near nil. There are very few curve-breakers. Maybe you can find a low-stress major and get through on little work. You probably wont find a job remember half dont. A low-employability, near-minimum-wage major and $50,000 in debt national averages are a bit over $25,000 are less valuable than a good high school diploma with four years of experience. Unenlightened? Call me a caveman. Cruel? I think of it as honest. Here is the substance of my advice as you graduate. One: If you have to borrow money to enter a university straight away, dont. Go to a community college. Pick rigorous courses that you know will transfer and get them at an 80 percent discount off the cost of state university prices. Dont borrow a dime. If you need a boost to finish after demonstrating ability at a community college, borrow sparingly in the last two years, but never in the first two. Never. Two: If your life circumstance requires you to work and study simultaneously, do it. There is no law of the universe that says a college education must take four years. If it takes more, and you can do it for cash, do it. Dont borrow money. Three: Consider carefully with your family, and counselors you trust, the dollar value of your careerpath choice. Find a way to graduate from college with little or no debt. Four: If you walk to class on C-note Nikes or check a Diesel watch to see if youre late, you are acting foolishly. Sorry for insensitive straightforwardness. When every friend youve got heads to Acapulco on spring break, dont go. Go do something noble to create capital. Work. Or study. But dont spend or export borrowed capital. Five: Lastly, if you think you worked hard in high school, know that any university worth its salt will have you working at levels four or five times more challenging for a good GPA. Study hard, work diligently and challenge yourself intellectually. Show this to someone you respect and ask him if I sound crazy. I dare you. All the best in your future. Walter V. Wendler is director of the School of Architecture and former chancellor at Southern Illinois University.

STUDY: Prospects are better with diploma

Continued from page E6

Congratulations! I hope your senior year of high school was a mesmerizing experience. The chapter closes and now another one has to open. What is it going to be like? Well, being that I wasnt invited to share my thoughts at your high school commencement, I decided to give my thoughts here in my blog. I hope you enjoy and take it seriously. 1. Go to college and further your education Dont pay too much for your education. Avoid student loans to avoid debt. Go to community college and get your general classes out of the way. Know that a degree alone doesnt assure you success in the real world. 2. Its not about you Employers dont care if you are happy. Employers dont care about your income. Employers dont care about what you think. Employers dont care about anything that has to do with you. Its about them and being profitable 3. Create Personal Value A company cares about what you bring to the table. You have to create more money for the company than what you cost the company. You have to have professional value in the workplace. If you dont have value you will be passed over and they dont care about your parents phone calls. 4. Responsibility Life, Results, Success, Happiness, Health, Prosperity, Relationships, etc.

Do good and you get the credit. Do bad and you get the blame. If your life sucks, thats because you suck. Learn not to suck at life. Its not your friends, parents, co-workers, employers fault in anything youve done. 5. Respect Others Respect people enough to show up when you say you are going to show up. Respect your employers enough to be there on time and stay late. Respect your bosss even though you think they are idiots because he/she is still your boos and deserves your respect. Respect your co-workers so they will respect you and your customers because they pay you. Respect people in general and you will get respect. People arent as stupid as you think they are. Seek first to understand than to be understood. 6. Clearly Define Priorities Your time, money, and priorities always go to what is important to you. If looking cute is important then you will spend your money at the mall. If financial security is important than you will learn to save and live on less than you earn. Time management isnt just two words in this blog. They are traits of a leader and a person of character. 7. Work Hard and Be Great Its not about passion people are passionate about things they suck at. You dont get paid to be happy on the job, youre paid to do your job perfectly. Work Hard at what you

are good at, not what you arent good at. You cant work hard and not be good because then you suck and your working too hard. 8. Change Your Attitude There are Three Questions you will ask yourself every day when you lay your head on the pillow. Three things you want to say, Yes to Is my life Meaningful? Is my life Rewarding? Is my life Fulfilling? If you cant answer, Yes to these questions than your purpose isnt clearly defined and your goals arent big enough. Life of Gratitude, not Attitude. Say Thank You 30 times a day. 9. Seek Advice and Wisdom from those with Experience Listen more than you talk. Listen to your elders. Discover what is really important 10. Take Time To Think There is a lot to really think about amidst the concerns of leaving the comforts of home and the chillaxing life of being a senior. Now you have to become responsible and selfsufficient. Make it happen! Jeff Yalden is a youth motivational speaker and teen experts that shares his message, About Life to over 150 high school assemblies and middle school assemblies every year. Jeff has been speaking professionally to teens since the early 1990s. Find out more about Jeff Yalden at www. JeffYalden.com and bring Jeff to your next high school assembly or teen leadership conference.

ploma, their future prospects in terms of salaries, employment, and other life prospects will be bet-

ter than someone who did not earn a diploma, Jason Amos, a spokesman for the alliance. What we really wanted to show was the impact

high school graduates have on their community. Not only does the graduate benefit, the community benefits as well.

Rawls, Bermea top two Trio receives top grad grads at Nixon-Smiley honors at Waelder HS

Its been said that one of the traits all successful people have in common is tremendous drive. If thats indeed true, then incredible success is inevitably in the works for Ashley Ellen Rawls, who is the Valedictorian for Nixon-Smiley High Schools Class of 2012. Blessed with the rare combination of brains, beauty and a great sense of humor, Rawls gave a unique response when asked how she felt when she learned she would finish at the top of her class. I guess it means I did something right, she said with a laugh. Ive always been kind of an overachiever, but ever since I was little I can remember this being something that I really wanted. I finally made it. Rawls is not your typical teenage girl, so it has no surprise that she announced she would be going to college at the University of Texas San Antonio to pursue an unusual major - neuroscience. When I was in elementary school and the teacher asked everybody what they wanted to be, she recalled. I said then that I wanted to be a neuroscientist. Its just pretty much always been in my head. I remember when I was learning how to read and I came across the word while I was flipping through the dictionary. I read about it and at that point, I knew I had found my lifes dream. Like most seniors, Rawls admitted to occasionally succumbing to the strain associated with high school but she credited her parents, John Rawls, Jr and Esther Rawls, for being a constant source of encouragement. High school has been stressful because I had goals that I was determined to accomplish, she said. That pressure was never put on me by anyone else, its just something that I believe I was born with. My parents have always supported me and helped to keep me focused. Being able to graduate at the top of your class is about achievement and at-

This just proves to me that I can go on from here and have a chance to really excel, she said. I came in as a freshman believing that I could do this, so I always pushed myself. The drive to do whatever it takes to finish on top is something Bermea said was instilled in her by her parents, Mario and Adella Bermea. My parents have always believed in me, but Ive also personally wanted to be the best, she said. I guess you could say my motivation came from both places. When asked how she felt looking back on her high school experience at Nixon-Smiley, Bermea gave a quick answer. It been really great, she said. I think going to a smaller school helped me because everything is so familiar and personal. This fall, Bermea will be attending Texas A&M University where she plans to pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ive wanted to be an engineer of some kind for the last two years, she said. I did some research and decided that mechanical engineering was the one I wanted most.

When speaking of top honors for a graduating class, your mind automatically thinks this is a reference to the Valedictorian and Salutatorian, the top two finishers. The situation is a little different at Waelder High School this year. Cody Orona has the top GPA in his class, but because WISD policy states a student must be enrolled in at least six semesters, he was not eligible to be named Valedictorian. Im still recognized as the top graduate, I just dont get the title, he explained. Everywhere I applied I was still able to put down my class rank as number one, so it was as good as it could be without having the title. The importance of a good education is something his parents, Rudy and Deanna Orona, harped on ever since Orona was of school age. From very early on, my family instilled the importance of academics in me, he said. When I started first grade, I went to a private school in San Marcos and they taught on a grade above level the grade you were in. The building blocks were set really early for me so when I came back to public school, I had a foundation and already knew academics was the way to go. Orona has already landed a four-year scholarship worth $215,000 to the Merchant Marine Academy. An integral member of the Waelder basketball team for the past two seasons, he will also get a chance to play in college although his primary focus will be on getting his degree. Plenty of athletes have had injuries and not had anything to fall back on, Orona said. Academics are going to be with you for the rest of your life no matter what. Orona hasnt narrowed down which particular field he will go into after graduation, but it will likely be lucrative since the academys alumni generally land jobs averaging $80,000 per year. Id rather work on the transportation side on a ship or in the port of har-

bor, he said. I wouldnt want to work internationally where Im gone three months out of the year traveling all over the world. Id rather have a solid job and be able to come home more often than that. With Orona not being eligible, the title of Valedictorian for the Class of 2012 goes to a very deserving Antonio Castillo. Earning this honor means a lot to me because Ive wanted it for all these years, he said. I never WAELDER, Page F4

Famous song never intended to be used for graduation events

Cannon News Services When asked to list renowned classical composers, Mozart or Beethoven may come to mind. Many people may not think to mention Edward Elgar, but theres an excellent chance thousands of people are very familiar with the most famous work by Elgar. Pomp and Circumstance is undoubtedly Elgars biggest claim to fame. It has become the standard to which many soon-tobe graduates proceed into their graduation ceremonies, both in high school and college. As such, it has become one of the most recognized concert marches. The song the trio section of the first march in a series written by Elgar was not written with the intention of being a gradu-

ation processional. Elgar built up his reputation as a composer of works for great choral festivals throughout England. In 1901, Elgar began composing five marches that would be named Pomp and CirSONG, Page F5

thought I would actually get it, but here I am. It means a great deal. I started getting on this path my junior year, so my goal was to get all As from then on. The son of Juan Castillo and Linda Garcia, Anto-

nio has chosen to forego college, but will instead become a member of the United States Air Force. He said his high school experience at Waelder is something he will always cherish. Waelder High is a good school, he said. I like that its small so you get a

chance to know everybody and the faculty helps you out a lot. Mr. (Jon) Cardenas has done a lot to help me prepare for the Air Force as far as getting everything in order. The class Salutatorian, Matilde Vela, said she has the distinct honor of doing something unprecedented

for her family. My parents didnt finish high school and neither did my brothers, she said. My sister finished, but she skipped college and went straight into working. By graduating as Salutatorian, it means a lot to me because I will be the first member of my family to at-

Shes always been there because shes wanted the best for me. I want her to be happy by seeing me succeed. Vela will attend the University of Texas San Antonio and pursue a degree in Nursing, which she hopes to parlay into a job working at a childrens hospital.

cumstance Marches. He is perhaps best known for the first of the marches, which went on to be simply named, Pomp and Circumstance, or The Graduation March. Since 1905, it has been use at virtually all high school and university graduations in America. The first time Pomp and

Circumstance was played in a graduation setting was when Elgar received an honorary Doctorate from Yale University in 1905. At the end of the ceremony, the march was performed as recessional music. It was so well-received that it was soon expected to be played during graduation ceremonies at many other prominent schools. Today it is rare to hear

The Graduation March played outside of commencement ceremonies. Many graduates have fond memories of hearing Pomp and Circumstance at their school commencement, even remembering the exact moment they received their degrees. For those attending a graduation ceremony in the near future, expect to hear this powerful march.

Persistence, determination pay huge dividends

for Flatonia Highs top two 2012 graduates

Theres nothing like a friendly competition to keep you sharp. Ask Alexandra Bruns, who pulled off a comefrom-behind victory of sorts to earn the title of Valedictorian of the Class of 2012 at Flatonia High School. I was a little bit surprised when I found out because Id been number two for a couple of years, but I was excited, she said. Bruns was able to come out on top largely because she took advantage of the dual-credit courses offered by Blinn College. Since her junior year, Bruns has taken college-level History, Government and Economics courses, collecting 12 college hours in the process. I did really well in those classes so it bumped up the grades that were calculated into my GPA, she explained. Bruns plans on matriculating at Texas A&M University, which is the alma mater of her parents, Shawn and Shawna Bruns. My friends tell me that Ive been brainwashed since I was young because both my parents went there and Ive been going to Aggie football games all of my life, she said laughingly. I just love it there. I love the spirit and the tradition and Im so excited about being there. While there, she hopes to attain a degree in Education with an eye on either being a teacher or a coach. Athletics is nothing new to Bruns. In fact, its been a major staple throughout her prep career. She has been a four-year starter for Flatonia in basketball, softball, track and volleyball, where she was named to the Texas Girls Coaching Associations Class 1A AllState Team twice in the last two seasons. I had thought about playing volleyball at some DIII school or something like that, but I decided against it, Bruns said. Im going to miss sports a lot, but I want to be in College Station my freshman year. My schedule has always been school then practice for a long time and I cant imagine not having practice in the mix of things, so Im definitely going to get involved in intramurals. As she looks forward to her future, Bruns said she will always favorably look back at the high school experience she had at Flatonia. Ive loved going to a small school because you get to know everyone really well, especially your teachers, she said. I think that Ive been preparing myself for the next phase of my life and I completely credit that to going to such a great school. Its been a long time that Kaci Pavlicek has been focused and fixated on attaining top academic honors. Her determination, discipline and dedication has

Flatonia High 2012 Valedictorian

paid off decidedly since she has been named the Salutatorian for Flatonia High Schools Class of 2012. This really means a lot to me because Ive worked really hard since my freshman year with this goal in mind, she said. I tried to find every way that I could to try to stay at the top of my class for the purpose of trying to get into a prestigious college. More than just a respected student, Pavlicek is also an accomplished athlete, playing four years on the schools varsity basketball, softball and volleyball teams. Her senior season in basketball was shortened after she tore her meniscus, but she has since returned to the playing field as a member of the Lady Bulldogs softball team, which is making a run at a bid in the state championship tournament. My favorite sport was definitely basketball, said Pavlicek. Im just now getting back into softball. I used to be the catcher, but the coaches are working me back into the batting lineup slowly because of the injury. As a student next year on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin, Pavlicek plans to keep sports on her agenda in some fashion. If I had gone to a small-

Alexandra Bruns

Flatonia High 2012 Salutatorian

er college, I probably would have tried to make a practice squad or something like that, she said. I dont think Im going to be able to do that at Texas, but I want to be involved in intramural sports. When it came down to make a decision as to which college she would attend, Pavlicek narrowed it down to two schools very early in the process. At the beginning of the year I only applied to TCU (Texas Christian University)and UT because I decided that those were the only two I wanted to choose from, she explained. They were just most appealing to me. UT ended up being the best place because I have family that went there and its closer to home. Im going into the medical field and they have a prestigious medical program. Whatever the future holds for her, Pavlicek said she will credit any success to having spent her formative years at Flatonia High. I love it here because were so small and I know everyone, she said. The atmosphere of the community is so centered around our school that they are always supportive no matter what were doing. Its nice to know that so many people want to see you succeed.

The proper way to wear graduation wardrobe

Salazar, Elida Nikki Thibodeaux, Zachary
Cannon News Services The traditional garb worn for both high school and college graduations is a wardrobe style created several centuries ago. Therefore, the style of the graduation gown and accessories may not be something students are accustomed to wearing today. Most students can expect to wear four main components come graduation day. These will include the graduation gown, a cap, a tassel, and a hood. Graduation gowns are generally similar in style. A gown will come down to the knee or below. It may be worn open as sort of a draped piece, or there may be fasteners or a zipper so that the gown is closed in the front. The sleeves may be bell-shaped or pointed, depending on the school and the degree being earned. Oftentimes, the gown coordinates with the school colors, and students should expect to wear the primary color associated with the school when they graduate. This way they can plan their underclothes accordingly. Because graduation gowns tend to be bright in color, often vivid blues, reds and greens, it is adviseable to wear neutral colored dresses, skirts, slacks and shirts underneath. Both male and female students

Torres, Brandon Vire, Larry

may want to consider a collared shirt under the gown for a crisp and professional look. The cap, also known as a mortar board, is a hat with a flat, square top. The color of the cap may tie into the color of the gown, or it could be a complementary school color. Sometimes it is a neutral black. The cap should be worn so that the board is parallel to the shoulders. It should not be tipped or worn on the back of the head. Hairstyles may have to be adjusted so that the cap is placed correctly. Schools will take measurements of students head circumferences so that the WARDROBE, Page G3

cap fits snugly. It should also be placed so that one of the points is directly in front. If looked at from above, the cap would form a diamond shape. A button should be at the top of the cap where the tassel is attached. The tassel is looped around the button and, in most instances, worn to one side of the face. Most schools require the tassel be on the right side of the face. Once students receive their diplomas and have been declared graduates, it is customary to move the tassel over to the left side of the face. Here it will remain until the cap is removed after the ceremony. A hood is worn when a graduate will be receiving a degree. It is more common at college graduations than high school ceremonies, where the hood will be more of a diploma scarf. The

hood should be placed over the head so that it drapes off the shoulders and down the back of the graduation gown. Hoods are colored in certain ways to draw attention to the area of specialization of the degree and also to the type of degree received. They will often be made from velvet and have a silk lining. The lining should be turned out down the back so that the color identifying the degree and school are prominently displayed. There may be a cord attached to the front of the hood. This cord can be attached to a shirt button or the zipper of the gown to keep the hood from slipping out of place. Although graduation clothing may seem out of place in this day and age, the formality and custom of donning a cap, gown and hood is something that further emphasizes the importance and tradition of the ceremony.
