English Core 4 Rough Draft

I am not a political science major, or any kind of political theorist, but I am tired of being talked down to. Im tired of turning on the television knowing Im going to get some perverse form of fictional literature ushered forth in the form of mindless rambling and vague promises. The solution to this problem is two men. Already many Americans have realized the power of these individuals and have tuned in to investigate. I would vote for them in a heartbeat, along with many other dedicated viewers. These men are the new movers and shakers of todays media. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are great Presidential candidates. Who better to be a president then someone charming intelligent, resourceful and actually interesting? Comedians being the President and vice president of the United States? No one would vote for Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert, get serous! Its ridicoulus some claim. This is no joking matter, as proof that anyone can be elected to be and political figure even if they do not have the history. The most recienct illistration of this is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Body builder/actor turned politician. This long time movie buff terminated other running mates and blew though to win the coveted position of Governor of California. It was thanks to his media coverage and likeable personality that he was able to win. He even ran as a republican in a primarily Liberal state, but still won. Ok, but this is state governor doubters say. Next lets direct our attention to the Fortieth President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. Beloved and one of the most adored Presidents; he was another media personality turned politician. This professional actor had almost no political

expertise before being elected to Governor of California. A few short years later he became the 40th President of the United States of America. Jon Stewart is as likely a candidate for political leadership as either of those media figures Some say Jon Stewart just would not be a good Presidential candidate because of his lack of political experience, mocking politics is one thing but meeting politicians and being an equal is another. Jon Stewart has more political competence because of his familiarity in politics due to the Daily Show then most politicians when they get started. Colbert also has a great deal of political know how because of his show the Colbert Report but is slightly less prominent because it was a spin off of the Daily Show. Some notable guests that have appeared on the Daily Show are Pervez Musharraf, President of Pakistan, former President Bill Clinton, former Vice President Al Gore, and former President Jimmy Cater. Also on the guest list is: Madeleine Albright, former United States Secretary of State, Senator Hillary Clinton, (D) New York, Senator John Kerry, 2004 Democratic presidential nominee, (D) Massachusetts, Howard Dean, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, Senator John McCain, (R) Arizona, along with at least fourteen other Sectary advisers or cabinet members, and more than 26 other Senators. Not to mention countless other political figureheads that have appeared on his show, (comedycentral.com). Political connections and experience? Two stars on that one. Not many other candidates could boast such an impressive rsum before their campaigning even got started. Saterical news reporters just would not make good Presidents, they would make a mockery of this country! says the still unbudgable nay-sayer. Indeed they would. But I wish to point out that the United States has little credibility left in the eyes of the world anyways, if a country does not hate us they roll their eyes in contempt. Having a comedian

president would not be a step down in any way. It would be good for the country, real men standing up for real issues instead of the politicians making vague promises or carrying on about their own idealism. Jon Stewart knows all about the hypocrisy and dynamics of the real world. He would force other candidates to have real platforms, not just empty oratories. They would have to have consistent, and practical platforms, otherwise Stewart would rip them to shreds. Jon Stewart is not afraid to say what needs to be said. He would actually asks the questions America wants to hear about really issues. He will make the politicians squirm, holding their feet to the fire. On President Truman's desk in his White House office was a placard that read the Buck Stops here. With Jon Stewart as President the buck would recoil in fear before it ever made to the white house lawns. A new era of existence will emerge: a world where every United States presidential conference will open with the Daily Show trumpet theme; where the public actually watches C-SPAN; a nation where most of the American public knew more than name of the president, and were actually up-to-date with what was going on in politics. Imagine the possibilities. Some claim they simply can not reach the to the public and have too small support base. . The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, averages 1.6 million, and The Colbert Report, averages 1.2 million,(Learmonth). People are now realizing that news does not have to be a painful experience but can a spoon full of satirical goodness. However, more and more Americans are turning to these shows for their news especially the new generation voters, 18-29. A measly nine percent viewed comical news shows back in

2000, however their number have incread by almost 300% in only five years. (cnn.com). Hows that for support base? The truth is Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert would make a great combination for the Presidency. With both their wit and political knowledge they would take the white house by storm. Something something something. Blahthe end

The new generation of voters are watching them, and being influenced by their new way of thinking, and reconizing that politics can be more than listening to puffed up wind bags, it can be about poking fun of them.

And every. Why great president to be the next president of the United States of America.

WHY THE HOST OF THE DAILY SHOW IS THE DEMOCRATS' UNLIKELY BEST HOPE IN 2008 There are no exact directions. There are probably no directions at all. The only things that I am able to recommend at this moment are a sense of humour; an ability to see the ridiculous and the absurd dimensions of things; an ability to laugh about others as well as about ourselves; a sense of irony and of everything that invites parody in this world. In other words, rising above things, or looking at them from a distance; sensibility to the hidden presence of all the more dangerous types of conceit in others, as well as in ourselves; good cheer; an unostentatious certainty of the meaning of things; gratitude for the gift of life and courage to assume responsibility for it; and a vigilant mind.

know, I'm beyond the 'supposed' demographic that would vote for a Stewart / Colbert ticket... but at 37... I would vote for these two in a heartbeat... for a Stewart/Colbert ticket. They're sharp guys with a lot of insight and at least they're better options than I've seen elsewhere. As for "this country is run by a comedian"--we have no credibility left with most of the world anyway, so I fail to see how this could be a step down
