Skiing success

Race ace Rhodri adds to medal haul

RHODRi Gale, Year 8 pupil at Tarporley High School has just returned from France with another skiing medal to add to his ever increasing collection. During the Easter holidays he raced in Courchevel, France, representing Chill Factore and Dragons Alpine Race Clubs, where a very impressive slalom run secured him 2nd place on the podium in the Scottish Childrens Championships. Rhodri particularly enjoys the discipline of slalom racing, which he continues to develop by attending twice-weekly ski race sessions held at Chill Factore, Manchester, the UKs longest indoor real snow ski slope. He has been racing there for four years since Chill Factore opened. The Race Club has given youngsters like Rhodri, who started skiing on family holidays at the age of three, the chance to build on their skiing talents and develop their full potential as racers. He receives excellent coaching all year round and has been very fortunate to have had further input from Olympic racers such as Alain Baxter arranged by Chill Factore. Rhodri is sponsored by Chill Factore in recognition of his talent and commitment to the Race Club. His commitment to racing and the dedication of his coaches paid off when, in January 2012, he attended the Welsh Alpine Championships in Champery, Switzerland and was awarded the prize for overall Welsh Alpine Champion, as well as 1st Welsh Alpine Slalom, 1st Welsh Giant Slalom in his age group and 2nd overall Welsh Boys Giant Slalom. One of his regular race coaches Andy Roose (Chill Factore ski instructor) said: Rhodri is a fantastic skier with a great eye for the correct line through a race course. Now Rhodri is back at base, ready to start a busy summer season of indoor training and racing. This began at Chill Factore recently when the slope hosted the Telford Club National and the Chill Factore Club National races. A good start for Rhodri coming 5th in both of these. The League is open to all skiers, from first time racers, who simply want to have fun, to upand-coming Winter Olympic stars,. Each race day, competitors battle it out in individual and dual slalom races to be crowned the Fun Summer Race League champion. Rhodri was the 2011 overall series winner of the under 12s and 2nd overall male series winner.

The young chef who got the boss working for HIm!
A 23 year-old chef at Kelsalls Royal Oak got a taste of the big time when he took over the kitchen for an evening and had the head chef working for him. The role reversal put Reef Weston in charge as more than 60 diners sat down for a three-course dinner. His chance to shine came at one of Taste North Wests Talented Chef events which put him in charge of a kitchen team that included the Royal Oaks experienced head chef Paul Haworth. Everyone started ordering at once and it was go-go-go for the next two hours, said Reef. But it was a great feeling afterwards when i went out to meet the customers. Their feedback was fantastic. His menu started with char-grilled hand-dived scallops on Wirral watercress puree, lemon and herbs, and crispy Cumbrian air-dried ham followed by Duttons free range breast of chicken with Malayan spices, sweet potato, coconut cream and lime yoghurt and a dessert of warm almond tart, poached pear, amaretto ice cream and crme anglaise. it was a great night for Reef, said Paul Haworth, and he rose to the occasion in grand style. Hes already getting a name for himself and if he carries on like this hell be a force to contend with in the future. Reef, who was born at Duddon and lives at Delamere, has worked at the Royal Oak for seven months and is usually the restaurants pastry chef. He began learning his trade after leaving Tarporley High School - working at local pubs, restaurants and hotels, a local patisserie and then for a cake and dessert specialist in South Yorkshire. i love seeing the product of my work, he said. Putting something on a plate that looks good makes me feel good too - and the job satisfaction is unreal. Reefs ultimate ambition is to own his own patisserie or perhaps even a restaurant but thats a long way off, he says. For the moment, i just want to keep learning.

Summer is a comin in
iF you are wondering how you are going to cope with looking after your children this summer then now is the time to consider booking an Au Pair, a convenient and cost effective way to ensure your children can make the most of their school holidays. Maybe they are already learning a language in school, so having somebody from abroad who wants to improve their English may also be a bonus for the children. Although Au Pairs are not qualified child carers, they do have some experience of looking after children, either through family or friends, and they have often worked in their own country as a baby sitter. In exchange for accommodation and some pocket money they will also help with some household chores and cooking. All sounds a bit of a relief when you think about it! The Bunbury Care Agency is a member of the British Au Pair Agencies Association (BAPAA). All our Au Pairs are recruited in line with their Code of Practice, ensuring that the person who comes to live in your home has been properly vetted and is able to meet all your requirements.

STOP P

RESS

We have just opened our own office in Valencia and are now able to recruit Spanish Au Pairs for the UK and send British Au Pairs who want to improve their Spanish to families in Spain. We already have families in Spain looking for summer Au Pairs. There are placements in both Valencia and Madrid, two of the most cultural cities in Spain. Please contact us for further information.

Children show their artistic skills

SCHOOLCHiLDREN are using their artistic skills to create birthday cards that will be seen by visitors to the Macdonald Portal Hotel in Tarporley. The pupils from Eaton Primary School visited the hotel to draw some pictures that they will then turn into birthday cards for the hotels fifth birthday this year. The children drew various scenes from inside the four-star hotel as well as its gardens and water features at the entrance and some of the extensive grounds. These will then be made into birthday cards which will be displayed in the hotel. Year 6 pupil Ariana Lee said: i really like drawing and i was really happy to help make the birthday cards for the hotel. Year 5 pupil Kizzy Whitehurst said: The hotel was lovely and it was really nice sitting in the sunshine and drawing the fountain outside. Year 5 pupil Thomas Kellett said: its really nice to think our drawings will be seen by everybody coming to the hotel. General Manager Sacha Cauwels-Wigan said: its great that the children are helping us to celebrate our fifth birthday this year. They were all working very hard on creating some brilliant pictures and i cant wait to see the finished birthday cards. The CosT of Care

M

ongoing European debt crisis or latest double dip recession takes centre stage again. It is estimated that the average cost of care in this country is around 37k per annum and for many families is likely to become one of the biggest financial commitment they will undertake. Yet despite this and the periodic headlines, Im constantly amazed at how little thought we generally give to this area of financial planning and how little help or advice is available from Care Homes and Social Services on the options available when faced with paying care fees. Forward planning is very important and a well drafted Will using a discretionary Will trust can effectively remove half the value of a couples home as an accessible asset upon first death, should the surviving spouse later require care. Get the wind in your sails

DID you know that the sailors in Team GB won four gold medals plus a silver and bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008? Have you ever thought about having a go at sailing? Winsford Flash Sailing Club (WFSC) is home to lots of sailors from the Tarporley, Tattenhall, Tarvin and Kelsall areas, and will be holding an Open Day on Sunday 24th June, 10am to 4pm. Local families are encouraged to come and have a go for free. The club is running this event as part of the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Sail for Gold campaign to bring the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games as close to home as possible for everyone. It will be a great opportunity to try this Olympic sport for yourself - WFSC is the club where Niki Birrell, Paralympic sailor and reigning world champion in the SKUD class, learnt to sail! There will be a whole host of activities on offer in addition to the chance to set sail with one of our experienced club members in a variety of different dinghies. You could win a RYA Level 1 Learn to Sail course by entering our free competition and take advantage of the reduced membership fees on offer. Weather permitting you will be able to take to the water in a kayak or Canadian canoe. Why not treat yourself to something from the BBQ or a home made cake from our galley which will be open for refreshments? Dont forget to bring a wetsuit if you have one or waterproof, warm clothes and old trainers and a change of clothing buoyancy aids will be provided. WFSC has a modern purpose built club house in a beautiful location and is a recognised RYA training club. Whether you want to get back into sailing or simply try something new with the family, we welcome people of all ages and abilities. It would be fantastic if, through London 2012 and Sail for Gold, WFSC can inspire a whole new generation of people in Cheshire to get out onto the water and discover a new favourite pastime. To find out more information about WFSC visit winsfordflashsailing.com or contact us by email at winsfordflashsc@gmail. com. To find out more about Sail for Gold visit www.rya.org.uk/sailforgold

health & beauty

with Angela Bartlett Q. I have booked to have individual eyelash extensions done at your salon and I was wondering what type of mascara I should use with them. What can you suggest? A. The great thing about eyelash extensions is that you dont need mascara! This is because both the extensions and glue are generally black so the lashes will look dark. Also, the extensions will add fullness to the lashes so mascara is not needed to thicken them. Mascara can be overkill with extensions and detract from the people-wont-believethey-are-not-your-own effect. However, if you feel you do need mascara then always choose one that can be removed without the need for an oily eye makeup remover as oil will weaken the bond between the extension and the natural lash. For our top tips on how to care for your eyelash extensions visit the June newsletter page of our website www.angelabartlett.co.uk. A short description of what individual eyelash extensions are is also available on this page. Q. Why does skin peel when you get sunburn? A. When skin has been exposed to ultra violet radiation from the sun the skin cells become damaged and peeling is your bodys method of removing the damaged cells that are at risk of changing behaviour and becoming cancerous. All the damaged cells are instructed to behave in this manner by repair mechanisms within these cells. This mass suicide of cells results in entire layers of damaged skin cells peeling off, to be replaced by other cells underneath those layers. Needless to say, sunburn should be avoided at all costs!

We supply and install a wide range of electrical goods from LCD and Plasma TVs to major kitchen appliances. Our shop is in the centre of Tarporley high street where we have continued to expand the showroom to accommodate a dedicated SONY and Panasonic home entertainment display, a Bosch and Siemens domestic appliance area, and a fitted kitchen with integrated appliances. We stock many leading brands and offer friendly, honest advice on all of our products. As a member of Euronics, the largest electrical buying group in Europe, we benefit from the heavyweight buying power of over 600 independent Electrical Retailers across the UK. This gives us the ability to offer competitive prices from a wide range of manufacturers while keeping our independence as a local family business. Before and aftersales service has been the foundation of our business for over 30 years.

J.BLAGG & SONS was established in 1981 when Peter and Keith joined their father in the family business retailing Televisions and Electrical Goods. Mr John Blagg originally started in business with his two older brothers in the late 1940s with their ironmongery and electrical shop Blagg Bros on Tarporley high street. With the invention of television becoming available in the 1950s the business developed into a dedicated Radio & Television shop. Generations of local families recall how Blagg Bros supplied the first television they ever owned, and for some the first television they ever watched was set up in the local village halls by Mr Blagg for coverage of the Queens Coronation. The support of the local community is as important to us as ever, having expanded our range of products to most electrical appliances, we are still happy to be known as Blaggs the television shop.

TWO students from Tongaat secondary School in Durban, South Africa, came for a weeks stay with their teacher Mr Naidoo. Lushen Moodly and Tiara Naidoo stayed with James Ryder and Alice Walsh. The Tarporley students acted as tour guides, showing their guests around the region, including Chester Zoo, Anfield and the Chill Factore, in Manchester. Alice said: They enjoyed learning about our culture and we cant wait to learn about theirs when we experience our reciprocal visit! They were really good company and we couldnt have asked for better Afritwins! Roll on October when James and i will be going to Durban- we cant wait - and who knows, we might even get a tan! History takes flight

A group of year 9 history students were picked to meet and interview a flight engineer from World War Two. Mr Carroll was a flight engineer on a Lancaster Bomber, one of the more popular fighter planes in WW2. He was called up on the 11th July 1942, just before he turned 19. He completed 27 successful raids in his time as flight engineer, which involved being in charge of the throttle, propeller adjustment, windows and fuel aboard the plane.

Wildlife Art comes alive at Gordale

THREE days of inspiring demonstrations by award-winning artists will launch this years National Exhibition of Wildlife Art (NEWA) at the Gordale garden centre, on the Wirral.

The UKs most published fine artist, PollyAnna Pickering, will be just one of the stars of NEWAs Wildlife Weekend running from 13th to 15th July. The event will also provide another chance to see contrasting woodcarvers Chris Hindley and Philip Nelson working in tandem, bringing birds to life in wildly differing ways, before your very eyes! Cheshire and North Wales will be further represented by internationally collected artists Claire Shaughnessy and linocut specialist Thelma Sykes. Each day of Wildlife Weekend, will provide a chance to see 3 or 4 talented wildlife artists from all over the Northwest, and beyond, showing and sharing their skills alongside the stunning exhibition itself. Each summer, this delightfully informal exhibition, housed in the natural light of Gordales ephemeral NEWA gallery, provides an experience the whole family can enjoy for free. With its vibrant presentation of almost 400 paintings, drawings and sculptures, the exhibition has regularly drawn over 17,000 visitors, making it Britains largest open, selling exhibition of wildlife art. This years show runs from July 13th to 29th, so why not come along and see a world of wildlife brought alive by a charm of gifted artists. Follow NEWA on facebook for further details.

FOOTBall TalK... TaRPORlEY VICS FC

Vics prepare for life out of the top flight

TARPORLEY Vics First Team has completed their Division One Cheshire League campaign and the squad are now planning for Division Two football for next season.
The two seasons spent in Division One have been highly enjoyable. While the return of only 11 wins from the two seasons football was not enough to secure First Division status, the experience gained against more talented, organised, and in some cases Semi-Pro Footballers will be essential if Tarporley Vics are going to succeed in Division Two. Knutsford Town have been crowned Champions for 2011/2012, a thoroughly deserved title for a team who play a style Football appreciated by everyone who enjoys the game. Tarporley Vics are hoping the return of several key players from injury and university will bolster and re-energise the squad. Pre-season training has already been scoped out and new players will always be welcome, especially for the annual Tour to Anglesey where Tarporley take on Double-winners Holyhead Hotspur FC who have just secured the Welsh Alliance League Division One Title and the Cookson Cup. Reserves Tarporley Vics Reserves playing record this season also exhibited a stall from the rate of climb previously experienced. Eight wins and five draws secured ninth position in the league. Andy Williams and the Reserves hope to mount a stronger challenge next season to Cuddington FC who won the League for the 2nd Year running. Steve Lloyd and the Cheshire Leagues representative side were beaten by Jersey in the Semi Final of the NLS Cup. The defeat, on penalties, to the eventual winners was another great experience for Steve, Warren Hill, Nick Abson and Al Rowntree. The Team were able to put this defeat behind them and on their return to the main-land they defeated the West Cheshire Leagues representative side 3-0 in the Cooper Smith Trophy. Sponsors Tarporley Vics FC would like to thank all the supporters, sponsors and players who have, despite a poor season on the field of play, continued to keep Tarporley Vics FC on an even keel. With the exiting prospect of Tarporley Vics FC returning to the Village your efforts are appreciated and, who knows, with improved performances on the pitch we could return to Division One in time to play our first game on Home soil. For further information on matches, training or sponsorship opportunities please view our website tarporleyvics.co.uk. Or Email us at info@tarporleyvics.co.uk. Tablet computers are not just for the young

TUTORS at Age UK Cheshires Computer Centre are busy getting to grips with two new tablet computers an Apple iPad and a Samsung Galaxy Tab. Age UK Cheshire has been selected to participate in a flagship project called Get Connected run by Age UKs National Development team. The project champions new approaches to help people to access and enjoy what the internet has to offer. As tablet computers are becoming increasingly more popular, Age UK Cheshire is researching how tablets can be used to teach internet skills. People aged 50 or over who may not have used a computer before are warmly invited to contact Age UK Cheshire to make an appointment to try out the iPad or Galaxy Tab. A number of Age UK Cheshires learners already use tablets to take and display photos; play music and games; download and read books and newspapers; browse the internet; keep in touch with family and friends by email or Skype; and engage in social networking activities. Yvonne Cockburn, Centre Co-ordinator at Age UK Cheshires Computer Centre said: Were delighted to be a part of Age UKs digital inclusion project, Get Connected. its always good to be at the forefront of new developments and it will be very interesting to see what feedback we get from our learners. Yvonne added: Tablet computers are light and portable and are gaining a huge share of the technology market. Some older people find the light-weight tablets easier to hold and use and dont feel as intimidated by them as they may do by conventional computers. in addition, Age UK Cheshire will be running social media seminars from May to provide an overview of popular social networking websites and to demystify terms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Age UK Cheshires Computer Centre in Hartford offers everyone over the age of 50 the opportunity to learn computer skills. it provides one-to-one tuition for absolute beginners, one-off sessions to revise and consolidate basic computer skills and small group classes in Skype and Digital Photography. The courses are purely learning-based and there are no tests involved. ladies choir hit the high notes

Tarporleys very own ladies choir The Decibellas recently took the top prize in the adult section of the choral classes of the Chester Competitive Festival of Performing Arts held at Kings School. The choir only formed in 2010 and this was their first time in a competition. They confidently won the womens choirs class, taking home The Stamford Cup with a distinction and 89 marks out of 100. Later in the day they were also awarded The Oriana Cup and intetech Choir Award of 50 for achieving the highest marks over all in the competition. Adjudicator Gaynor Keeble described The Decibellas as An extremely accomplished choir. Decibellas Musical Director Melanie Levy said that she was thrilled with the result and added These ladies have only been together for two years and have achieved so much. i am very proud of how hard they have worked to reach this standard.

Decibellas will join forces with several Cheshire choirs directed by Matt Baker at Chester Racecourse on 29th May to welcome the Olympic Torch on its journey around the region. They will also appear on the streets of Chester at The Big Sing on Saturday 30th June as part of the citys Summer Music Festival. Your next chance to see them perform here in Tarporley will be at the Carnival on 14th July and at their summer charity concert at St Helens Church on Thursday 19th July. Let Dig & Shift alleviate the problem by installing land drains

Soggy garden?

Land drains when installed by Dig & Shift are a very efficient, corrugated and perforated pipe laid underground within a drainage medium for collecting excess rainwater from boggy areas such as gardens and playing fields. The water filters into the land drain via the perforations and is then run off to a suitable dispersal point such as soakaway or watercourse Often we are able to solve the problem quickly and efficiently with the minimum of disruption to you and your garden Dig & Shift your local, reputable groundworks company Call us now or e mail us on:If you are considering installing land drains as part of a larger garden make over we are able to assist with this and if it something we dont do we will be able to recommend a reputable tradesman or Co that can!

Our services also include mini digger & dumper hire, garden clearance, ponds dug out, driveways, footings for new build or extensions inc spoil & waste removal, topsoil & turf supplied and laid, domestic drains

Welcome to Gastr
AS summer approaches (well we can live in hope) there would be nothing nicer than to relax in the sun and enjoy a quiet cup of coffee, delicious platter of cheeses or a decadent afternoon tea on a sunny terrace. Thats exactly what we hope you will do at our new deli, Gastronomy, recently opened on the High Street in Tarporley. We have had a successful deli in Hale for four years now and our dream was to open a second shop. We are a family run business with four partners, Peter and Annabel and Rebecca and Mark. Annabel and Rebecca are actually sisters, which you will probably guess as soon as you walk into our shop. We all work in our shops on a daily basis and hope that this gives Gastronomy its unique and friendly atmosphere. Although we all have very different interests, we all share the same passion for food and a commitment to customer service. We were voted Regional Runner Up in the national Deli of the Year competition by our customers in 2011. Here are some of the comments that were sent to the judges Great food and very friendly service. Fantastic choice of British cheeses and products. Quirky sandwich names and brilliant soups. Because I have just eaten the best sandwich Ive ever had in my life and Ive had a few! I almost left half of it to put on a pedestal to remind me of its magnificence We have worked hard over the last four years to source original and delicious products for our customers to enjoy both on the premises, to take away or even delivered to your door. We specialise in British cheeses, home cooked meats, fresh baked bread and cakes, homemade soups and high quality sandwiches made to order. We complement these products with selected jams, chutneys, oils and many other exciting ingredients.

Select
We carefully selected coffee and tea suppliers when we opened our first deli and became known in the area for the quality of our house coffee and our blends of loose leaf teas, we look forward to introducing these to our customers in Tarporley. We started our outside catering on a small scale, but this area of our business has expanded considerably over the last few years with Annabel at the helm. We deliver our fresh food to offices, dinner parties, club and society events, weddings and funerals. Again, our focus is on the quality of our service and the freshness of our food.

89a High Street, Tarporley, Cheshire, CW6 0AB. For all enquiries contact 01829 732780 or Annabel - 07704 130259 or Rebecca - 07767 317892 www.gastronomydeli.co.uk

ronomy
Word of mouth is the best way of telling you about our service so heres what some of our customers say about our outside catering Thank you for the lunch, the sandwiches were delicious and the cakes did it for me, they were heavenly. Having such a nicely presented lunch gave a very nice feel to our meeting - Bridget Stidworthy Chorus HR Thank you so much for catering for our party the food was absolutely amazing and the service fantastic. It was a pleasure dealing with you. Angus and Anna Rigby, Cheshire. Thank you so much for the wonderful catering, in particular your calm and efficient presence, which we were hardly aware of save for the fact that everyone was well fed and very happy. Mrs Sauvain, Cheshire Now we have something to live up to having just blown our own trumpet quite loudly! We would all love to welcome you to Gastronomy, where we hope you can sample our delicious products. Whether its Marks friendly service and great coffee or advice from Peter on the cheese. Gastronomy - great family hospitality.

Peckforton and Beeston WI After discussing the resolution for this year regarding the training, employment and retention of midwives David Tideswell gave us a seasonal look at garden birds, this was an excellent talk accompanied by some brilliant slides showing the many birds that visit and nest in his quite small back garden. He informed us about the best type of food and feeders to use and how to site them to encourage different species to visit on a regular basis. This information was all given in a very humorous way and was enjoyed by everyone enormously. Our forthcoming events will be our Garden Party on 13th June, the outing on 4th July to Plas Teg and the usual meeting at Peckforton Village Hall on 1st August at 7.30 pm when Christina Spencer will talk to us about Living with 50 million foreigners. Do come and join us, a warm welcome awaits anyone who pays us a visit. Did you spot him? He is on the top of page 66
